I wonder why so many seem to be assuming that she is naive - we have no idea. She may have bought them as novelties, but (as laTigresse said) kids may not know some things about their parents. Mastermataeo's suggestion (asking her where she found the socks and why she bought them) seemed like a very good start, indeed

Oh please.  Your mom knows what it means.  I look like a danged librarian, I have adult children, and I can garauntee you I know more then my appearance would indicate.  My kids don't know about my preferences but they know me well enough to know "I won't ask, please don't tell me."
If you mom bought those socks she did it deliberately.. LOL who the heck buys handcuff socks without knowing there are implications. 
Sheesh.. kids.
Do they think they sprung from the cabbage patch?

Personally, I think she knew what it meant when she bought. As others have said, ask her where she bought them and why. And then let us know!

I've never assumed my mother was naive. I've seen too many times she surprised me through the years. My guess .. she thinks its funny or .. it means more. The idea that she does not know what it means .. doubtfull.

I think you might be underestimating your mom and will be rather surprised after your talk. Most likely she either bought them to express a side of herself that few know about or she knows your into it. Either way, I would love to be a fly on the wall when you bring it up! Offhandedly, tell your Mom that you met this guy and are going out with him this weekend. Tell her that he's a subcontractor and his name is Larry, but he likes to be called sub Larry......Say, "He's taking me to some new club... Hey...can I borrow those socks this weekend?"

Wait for the response..then say...just kidding.
