Is it just me or have others on this forum/site realized it seems that if most on this site seem to be much more intelligent than "the average bear"?  I may be wrong but to me it seems as though those that are in the "life" or into BDSM are somewhat more articulate or at least put the effort into how they portray themselves than the average joe.

realtuffdom -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 2:58:52 PM)

That's the reason I'm here. My lack of intelligence and struggle with common sense helps to bring down the average so we're able to operate under the radar.

ain't that the truth...

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:03:23 PM)

Well my theory is that it takes a lot of leisure time and money to be active in the scene.  Poor and uneducated generally don't have the finances or leisure time to explore and luxuriate in these sorts of hobbies- including spending any significant time online.

There are plenty of exceptions on all sides of course.

MadRabbit -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:06:06 PM)

Which is why you get poor young people like me without the leisure time or money to be active in the scene who come here for an outlet.

LaTigresse -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:07:13 PM)

It's just you.

You need to spend more time reading the forums...........

stef -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:07:38 PM)

Oh, if only that were true.  We live on the same bell curve as the rest of the world and the people here are no more articulate/intelligent/trustworthy/enlightened/open minded/etc. than the rest of the population.  But don't let that dishearten you too much  [;)]

Welcome!

I don't agree at all. Have you seen the many messages filled with numerous spelling errors and poor sentence structure? Not to mention the crazy ideas that are so prevalent, especially in the off topic threads. Or the same mistakes being made over and over by fellow bdsm'ers . I really don't think people are any more or less intelligent in BDSM than in vanilla life. Many just think they are.

FullCircle -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:13:37 PM)

It's 50/50 If you ask me.
“The only stupid question is one that goes unasked”? Whoever said that hasn’t seen some of the posts here.

Someone’s ability to spell correctly is a bad indication of intelligence in my opinion.

State benefits. If they are posting throughout the day all week it’s likely this is their unemployment pass time.

Well, it certainly isn't a good indication of intelligence is it? I seriously doubt you view a well written message and a poorly written message equally.

Maybe I'm way off base...but this seems like a post based on no
intelligence at all and silly misconceptions of people on Welfare.
Certainly doesnt appear to be an open minded individual...again I could be way off base.

I count the thought and imagination behind the words in truth. Not everyone can get an idea across in written form well but it doesn’t mean they have nothing to offer. In some cases the opposite is true; people that follow rules often follow them because they can’t make sense of things for themselves. A stifled mind is one that knows nothing other than how to be seen as being correct. I’d rather come up with an original idea and be wrong than just copy the majority view.

The only people that run the place are those with the mentality that work is fun. In my experience these aren’t the types that duck out to chat on forums every half hour.

Several years ago I would agree with the highlighted part of this, but nowadays, no way.  I think Internet access is cheap and accessible.  Some people come on here from libraries to post and look through profiles, they don't even have to have their own computers.  Anyone can get online.  And many people without jobs or the desire to get jobs find sitting online to be a great, inexpensive way to waste an entire day.

teamnoir -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 3:46:56 PM)

I used to think that was true... back before AOL brought the collective IQ of all internet users down considerably.

Now I just think that a written forum just tends to favor those who are literate. People who aren't literate can't really participate or attempt, and fail to communicate themselves much at all.

So it's not bdsm, imo, it's just this form of communications. You'd probably find the same sort of intellectual variation amongst any online interest forum.

NeverForget -> RE: Intelligence (8/16/2007 4:02:51 PM)

Wow..I logged back in a couple of hours later..found no reply to my "introduce yourself" message but 18 replies to this post.

In response to my own post, I just tend to find that people in the "life" seem to be more articulate and have more intelligence than your average person, hence the ability to be so creative sexually.  I'm sure as I read more posts I will find the opposite but as for now  I enjoy thinking that we are a rare breed and being a rare breed whether good or not so good has it's advantages :D
