Lucky redheads [:D]

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 1:38:25 PM)

Sorry to be a fly in your ointment. I am a redhead and  have a high pain tolerance in a S&M sense and in a medical. I have had major surgeries and taken minimal pain meds. Why? because I didn't need it and am not a big fan of pain meds. The problem with studies is the people funding tend to find the answers they want in a select group.

I am actually a lightweight when it comes to anesthetics and pain meds. I tend to respond to a very low dose so I wasn't part of the selected study and can only speak for my own body.

Someone mentioned something about red hair being taking into consideration when knocking them out.... maybe that's an answer to why I had such a hard time waking up and became sick when I had my surgery. I went in at 7 am, was told it would take an hour at most, and I would be home by lunch... I didn't get home until almost 5 pm, The nurses gave me everything possible, including a motion sickness patch they put behind my ear.

Just my thoughts and ideas,
girl

I have had similar experiences with post-surgery nausea ...it will help if you tell them the before next time you have surgery...it is easier to prevent than to stop.

I handle chronic pain fairly well...acute pain not so well...sensual pain has a different context and my experience so far has been that my perception of it differs based upon my relationship with the person I am partnered with.

I've read various articles that say that redheads are more sensitive to pain and require more anaesthesia.  The flip side of that is that redheads are also better able to tolerate pain.  I'm a redhead myself and the couple of times I've had to be anaesthetized, I remember the anaesthetists coming back a few times to see if the dope had finally kicked in or not, then deciding to just go ahead with it since I was at least groggy and they didn't have all day to wait on me to conk out.

My sister - a blonde - is a labor and delivery nurse.  She says she's absolutely seen a difference in how redheads tolerate pain and anaesthesia.  With her job, she's in a position to see a pretty wide range of pain (and yes, we laugh about our overlapping job descriptions).  She was very matter-of-fact about it and didn't have to work hard to remember any redheads that stood out as unusual because apparently we all are.

This is still an interesting topic, isn't it?
There seems to be something to it. Maybe more scienticfic research is needed.

Real redheads are rare and descend from a small genetic strain - 1% someone said above). There is often a certain look or type and Irish, English +? heritage, pale translucent skin, freckles or prone to them.
( like I said, I am blonde - born this way- golden)

Can anyone speak for dark aubern, brown types? Would that be different?

and pure dyed red doesn't count

Speaking of genetics, there's some thought that redheads may be extinct in 100 years:  http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22289183-2,00.html

Apparently, the whole sensitive skin thing was an evolutionary gamble that just didn't pay off.  All we've really contributed during our time on the planet is the presence of earth tones in the textile industry, a few good episodes of South Park and an extraordinarily gifted comedienne www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/catherinetate/  who does lots of skits about gingers:  www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVXTa5V2gAE

Pain is a state of mind. It can be controlled.

MsSaskia -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 2:22:14 PM)

From Wikipedia   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_hair

In people with red hair, the cells that produce skin and hair pigment have a dysfunctional MC1R. Researchers have found that this dysfunction triggers the release of more of the hormone that stimulates these histonal cells, but this hormone also stimulates a brain receptor related to pain sensitivity.[26][27]
Two studies have demonstrated that redheads have differential sensitivity to pain compared to non-redheads, but they differ as to the direction of the effect. One study found that redheads are more sensitive to thermal pain (a natural vitamin K deficiency is to blame for this)[28] while another study concluded that redheads are less sensitive to pain from electrical stimuli. It has also been found that mutated "redheaded" mice with non-functional MC1R are less sensitive to pain from multiple modalities.[29]
Researchers have found that redheads require greater amounts of anesthesia, but other research shows that women with naturally red hair require less of the painkiller pentazocine than do either women of other hair colors or men of any hair color. A study showed redheaded women had a greater analgesic response to that particular pain medication than men.[30] A follow-up study by the same group showed that redheaded men and women (and mutant "redhead" mice) had a greater analgesic response to morphine-6-glucuronide.[29]

Daddysredhead -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 2:26:02 PM)

I have been naturally red since birth.  I remember when the study came out, approx. 6 years ago when I was having several dental procedures done.  I pulled the results and gave them to my dentist so he would know that I wasn't kidding.  I usually take 4 does of novacaine to drill my teeth.  I can't use the stuff that numbs you without making it feel like you have a fat lip, I need the old fashioned numbing agent.  When I had my "Thing 1 and Thing 2," the regular epidural didn't do squat and they had to give me a second one.  It was crazy bc the nurse kept saying, "You don't feel a thing now, do you?"  I wanted to amputate her limbs one at a time so she would kinda get the picture from my side.

As for play, I can take quite a lot, and have yet to safeword.  I think it may be a mental thing with me, in that, I know that there is an expectation of pain with my play with Daddy, and it is gradually brought on so my body builds up tolerance.  When I go in for a medical or dental procedure, I want it pain free.  When I had sinus surgery 7 years ago, I didn't take any meds post-op as I didn't think the pain was intolerable.  I have to be careful about taking pain meds anyway, bc a little goes a long way at times.  I've taken regular Tylenol and knocked out from it.  So, I think it can be a two-way street.  When it's dental work, the nerves are extra sensitive, and I say gimme as much juice as you got!  When it's play, the sky's the limit... bring on the sting.  [8D]

ROFL on Thing 1 and Thing 2:  I've introduced submissives that way.  ; )

The difference with play vs surgery is that good tops will get your endorphins going along with the other stimuli.  If you get ramped up enough that you get those endorphins going, your pain tolerance is going to be a lot higher.  Being sexually aroused is also part of that.

My sister - a nurse - was giving me extremely painful injections for a few years. I was joking with her about how I keep hoping I'll be able to eroticize the pain, since arousal seems to help my own play partners and clients so much.  She thought for a moment and asked if I'd like her to go put on a more revealing top.  I had to laugh, which helped relieve a little pain.  She wasn't serious about wanting me to get aroused at the proximity and sight of her implants, but she would've done it as a joke just to get me distracted from the agony of the injections.

This is very true.  Daddy gets me stoked in all kinds of ways, so my brain is tripping on endorphins and sexual arousal is very high.  This makes all kinds of things bearable, and makes me all glassy-eyed.  [8D]

mypain56 -> RE: redheads feel more pain (4/25/2008 7:58:54 PM)

ok, folks i am a true redhead and maybe my pain level is rather high because i have had many a broken bone. And daddy will not be with anything but a pain slut. Daddy/sadist/ex-Marine believe me he can torture the best of them although some times emotional pain is so much worse don't you think especially when he has me on orgasm denial, no touching except for wiping. "PERIOD" and just voice makes meeven afraid just to wipe myself. sorry TMI.... but i don't know how to pronouce it but i heard people with the red eyes and snow white hair, that redheads are very similar in ways. With there skin pigments and burning factors i cannot go out in the sun for any length of time i have been burn so bad by the sun i have been rushed to the hospital twice and will never do it again. But really i don't think it matters what color your hair is it is your pain tolerence that matters.

LadyBug1967 -> RE: redheads feel more pain (4/25/2008 8:23:29 PM)

I have a friend, long now deceased, who told me that back when she went to college (during the depression) that the school she attended was doing a study on redheads.  At the end of the study it was determined that redheads, especially those with light colored eyes, are far more susceptible to sensitive to light and sound that other people are.  I have always found this to be true in me.  I've never listened to my music loud.  I can't strand bright lights.  So when I met Master and became His slave I felt that I could never take the pain that He wanted to inflict on me.  However, W/we have since broken up and I now go to a local dungeon to get my BDSM fix and I'm finding that I can tolerate a lot more pain than I ever thought I could.  I have not yet used my safe word!  I think it's a point of pride with me because I frequently end up with welts and black and blue marks that last for up to two weeks before going away.  So I don't know what my threshold is yet, but I have a feeling I'm getting there.       LadyBug    [:)]

Redheads feel more pain? I don't know about that. I thought they were carriers.

MsSaskia -> RE: redheads feel more pain (4/27/2008 1:27:38 AM)

My understanding, from my own experienced, from my-sister-the-nurse's reports, and from various articles I've read is that redheads feel sensations (like pain) more quickly, have a higher pain tolerance, and need more anaesthesia to conk us out than non-redheads.  Doesn't make much sense, but it's twue.

I remember being brought in for very minor surgery when I was 7.  I was giving something to conk me out - pills of some kind - and left alone in a room so I could drift off.  They came in to check on me a few times and were surprised each time that I was still not only conscious, but sitting up and a little pissed off and bored, wishing someone would tell me what the hell was going on.  They realized I wasn't going to go under, so just went ahead with the procedure and got it over with as quickly as possible.  I was in some pain when they did it, but I was more pissed off than hurt.

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: redheads feel more pain (4/27/2008 1:59:17 AM)

I just got home from a play party where I worked over my redheaded girlfriend.  She has a higher pain tolerance than I do, and I have a (well earned) reputation as one of the biggest pain pigs in Arizona.

Redheads were a weird little genetic gamble that's not paying off too well. We're on the road to extinction. [Fewer] of us are born every year. Makes me wonder what traits initially worked thousands of years ago that worked for the climate at the time.

The redheaded gene may not look like a survival trait in a global warming world, but if someone in one of these assorted little wars makes a slip-up, we could still flip to nuclear winter. Which would make redheads back into the sort of folks you want in your family...I've met one particular redhead whose skim-milk skin exemplified "make vitamin D in a blizzard". And it takes vitamin D for our bodies to absorb calcium—which is why they're now supplementing so many brands of OJ with it, as the population includes more and more lactose-intolerant humans...not just for the greying population, though doubtless that boosts the market share. After all, it was a generation or two of black youngsters (whose melanistic skin limits how much vitamin their bodies produce) growing up with rickets post-Civil-War that caused the USA to require its addition to milk.
