Lashra -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/14/2007 8:22:29 PM)

I'm a redhead as you can see from my pic. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, though I have noticed the left side of my body is much tougher than my right for whatever reason. But there is one thing that will always get me the SUN, I sunburn so easily that I have to wear lots of sunscreen.

Every time I tell her a pop was not that much, she takes offense. This could be why, since she is auburn. Actually, I think I read years ago that redheads had more nerve endings in their skin. Anyone else remember that?

I love it when he calls me wimp girl while he's swinging a cane from about a mile out and it creates a sonic boom.......

goodgirl85 -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/14/2007 9:51:58 PM)

Keep in mind that pain tolerance is something that CAN be built up, so someone with a high level of pain tolerence could have built it up over time. Also keep in mind that NATURAL redheads only account for 1 percent of the world's population. I happen to be a natural redhead... only two other people in my family with red hair, my mom, and one of my mom's cousins daughters. No one seems to know where it comes from, except for the fact of the cousins kid points it to come from my mom's fathers side. Other than that, everyone is at a loss. The majority of my grandfathers family is brown and brown, with a few blonde and brown thrown in. What I know of my gramma's side is blonde and blue. My mom, the cousins kid and myself, are red and brown.

Someone mentioned something about red hair being taking into consideration when knocking them out.... maybe that's an answer to why I had such a hard time waking up and became sick when I had my surgery. I went in at 7 am, was told it would take an hour at most, and I would be home by lunch... I didn't get home until almost 5 pm, The nurses gave me everything possible, including a motion sickness patch they put behind my ear.

My pain tolerence is quite low, it just so happens I like pain and am determined to build my pain. When I want to safeword, i wait a few more strikes if being whipped, or a full minute if being clamped.... I used to cry when being whipped with a leather belt... its been a long while since Ive cried because of being whipped... then again its been a while since Ihave been whipped... : P....

Just my thoughts and ideas,
girl

I'm a red-headed wimp.  *sigh*

taintedgypsy -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/15/2007 4:03:28 AM)

I really do not know with play what tollerance I have ... it seems to change with mood, excitement, physical and mental well being. I do know that in life I have a high tollerance for pain and that I can work through most pain. I was born blonde, went reder over the years and dulled and got darker as I got older. Thank god for red in a box ...

I do how ever have terrible trouble with operations, alergies to premeds, waking up or not staying out however you want to look at it lol. I am also told it takes a lot to knock me out in the first place. I come from a long line of Irish redheads, my daughter is a redhead.

leatherette -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/15/2007 5:03:04 AM)

This is still an interesting topic, isn't it?
There seems to be something to it. Maybe more scienticfic research is needed.

Real redheads are rare and descend from a small genetic strain - 1% someone said above). There is often a certain look or type and Irish, English +? heritage, pale translucent skin, freckles or prone to them.
( like I said, I am blonde - born this way- golden)

Can anyone speak for dark aubern, brown types? Would that be different?

and pure dyed red doesn't count

thanks and happiness

deep red highlights naturally....and while i dont have a high tolerance for pain, i *live* with so much all the time that i can compartmentalize it.  i bruise easily, feel pain very intensely, and cannot tolerate sun or heat....

Sir says he has to be extra careful with me because i cant take the pain....which is true.

a medical study...
quote:

People with red hair are more sensitive to pain and consequently need more anaesthetic during operations than other patients, according to new research.

"Red hair is the first visible human trait, or phenotype, that is linked to anaesthetic requirement," says anaesthesiologist Edwin Liem, who conducted the research at the Outcomes Research Institute of the University of Louisville, US.

so, have any dom/mes found this to be true?

as for this redhead, it always takes more anesthetic than the anesthetician plans for...to the point of Full Blown Dentist Phobia...as well as MOST synthetic pharmeceutical pain-killers worsen any existing pain, instead of relieving it.

TheScrivener -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/15/2007 5:55:32 PM)

I think one thing to keep in mind is that there are two different elements to pain:

- The amount of pain experienced.
- The tolerance for that pain.

What this study is focusing on is the amount of pain experienced.  As a very-fair skinned person who was born a redhead (It all fell out when I was very young and came back blonde) I tend to agree with this assertion.  Pale people (It's a more appropriate blanket to throw this group under, including both redheads and natural blondes who are pale) have more sensitive skin.  We burn easily, and in general, bruise easier than other individuals do.  I think it's very reasonable to say that we experience more pain than someone of a darker skin-tone, under the exact same influence.  Keep in mind this is all about averaging things out.

Pain tolerance is what people tend to confuse with pain.  If you compare an average joe, who isn't kinky in the least, and a redhead masochist, the average person is going to say that a whip hurts a lot more than the masochists will.  Pain-tolerance is the part of the equation that is based on perspective.  Just because a hard spanking doesn't bother you doesn't mean that the person who cries from the same spanking is experiencing more pain.  It just means that you have a much higher tolerance (or often in our cases, enjoyment) of pain.

What I was going for, and may have lost, is that it's nearly impossible to compare pain from person to person.  Our tolerance levels are all completely different, no matter how similar we may think they are.  When you strip away tolerances, I think you'd find that on average your skin-tone and sensitivity scales with the amount of pain you experience as a whole.  But since there's no real method for standardizing pain, it's a difficult idea to prove.

- TS

Both of these are very hard to compare from person to person, because we each have only one body of experience to base our assumptions on.

on of the submissives I play with often is redheaded and I have worn myself out before she gets close to safewording

leatherette -> RE: redheads feel more pain (8/15/2007 6:45:35 PM)

Thank you OP and everyone who answered.

This has been great. No one was offended or thought anyone was trying to put down, build up or smear anyone. This thread wasn't taken wrong or labeled any ugly name.

Thanks to everyone for really being tolerant and openminded and not jumping to any conclusions of ill intent. I hope this speaks for all.. not just silly saying this - but all- everyone should be proud.

To TheScrivener - yes I too think perception is reality. But, maybe it is possible that light skinned, red, what have you - not percieve sensation differently , but PROCESS pain differently?

(side note to mrs Merc - ooh me too!  Synthetic pills always backfire! Weird biochem!)

breatheasone -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 10:42:42 AM)

I have red highlights...does that mean I can tolerate pain but only for a little while? [:D]

MercTech -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 10:55:57 AM)

The gaelic heritage redhead has thinner skin, more easily bruised, sensitive to sun.  It is part and parcel of a certain genetic heritage.
Natural red hair is an indicator for an anasthetic tolerance for a physician as well but not proof of it.
I doubt some of the swarthy skinned blue eyed redheads from the middle east have the same pain sensitivity that you find in a red headed irish colleen. <grin>

Not I. Many years ago, my first BDSM experiences were with a redhead. Total pain slut. Her back and bottom were as red as a stop light when I'd finish with her, and she could have taken more.

MissMorrigan -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 11:31:09 AM)

Same here (with the latter comment). I also have a very high resistance to anaesthetics in general and to the point that a dentist can give me the maximum dose allowance and it still doesn't numb the area, so if I need any work done they just get right on with it and I hope for the best that a nerve isn't touched.

hmmmm....I used to be a redhead, now its more dark blonde with a bit of red tones in it....(naturally changed I mean, not dye)

I have a pretty darn high pain tolerance when it comes to S&M type play. Ive scared people.

But I do have a really high resistance to anestesia (spelling?) and pain killers

Untrue.

My morsel is a natural redhead and can absorb scary amounts of pain.

On the other hand, My precious has auburn hair... and the same skin traits as most natural redheads (fine, porcelain skin, lots of freckles, etc.) and can absorb scary amounts of pain as well.

good god, that's a yummy description of a girl...!

dawndewdropbaby -> RE: redheads feel more pain (12/9/2007 12:19:47 PM)

I know I always asked to be knocked out for anything, even if its drwing blood..I hate it!. My hair naturally turned red when I was younger, still I don' think it has anything to do with me being a wuss.
