BEIJING - Scores of people were arrested in a traditionally Tibetan area of western China following public calls for the return of Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, reports said Friday.

Also Friday, China moved to tighten its control over Tibetan Buddhism by asserting the communist government’s sole right to recognize Buddhist reincarnations of the lamas that form the backbone of the religion’s clergy.

All future incarnations of living Buddhas related to Tibetan Buddhism “must get government approval,” the official Xinhua News Agency said, citing the State Administration for Religious Affairs.

yes, I remember a retort out here once, about the crying of the mamma sans if something or another happened and how the government of China would be dismantled in short order were they not to avail themselves to the will of the people.........

Sorry, but I've been out of action for a little while.  What happened to the Dahli Lama?  How many are scores of people?  Is this another western information campaign aimed at the PRC or what?  Have these people been released, as if they were only detained, or are they imprisoned?  Can someone please fill me in?

Did you read the article?

mnottertail -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 5:51:13 PM)

The Dhali Lama has not had a mailing address in Tibet for some time now.

slaveish -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 6:09:40 PM)

I don't know whether to be sad or sick. Very depressing.

Babybass -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 6:22:08 PM)

All future incarnations of living Buddhas related to Tibetan Buddhism “must get government approval,” ....

What???

I agree with slaveish - don't know whether to be sickened or saddened by the whole thing.

I mean - what????

I'd say "sickened" and "saddened" are both appropriate, unfortunately.

Lordandmaster -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 6:43:49 PM)

OK so like does this mean we're about to invade China?  I thought our mission was to rid the world of evil dictators.

Only those under a certain GDP.

DragonXPhoenix -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 7:19:02 PM)

uh....yeh...ok...now I have read it.  I'm not so concerned now.

crazychris52285 -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 7:35:40 PM)

talk about a damn shame. how can we deal with these people so willingly? i mean, i know there's money and trade deals involved, but still...to willingly support a government universally known for it's violations of human rights? that's fucking stupid.

Sinergy -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 7:42:53 PM)

China has disappeared the one raised to choose the Dahli Lama, and are raising some other child to make the choice at the will of the government of China.

The one eventually chosen will be at the blessing of the government of China.

and this is why we have no need to worry about or fear china.....they could give a fuck less about gai jhin.  And they are not trying to usurp us by taking all the oil, but they have need AND the money.

They just want to heat their homes, not kill all you round eyes.

Level -> RE: China jails Tibetan Buddhist leaders (8/3/2007 10:23:30 PM)

I'm sure they'd be as happy to kill the roundeyes as some of us would be to kill them. The Tibetans seem less assholish out of the three.

The Chinese may not be able to make their appointee stick, the Tibetans can pick someone outside of Chinese control.

Well hey we gotta get some fun somehow. Achieve life balance and all that.

Friends, it's "Dalai," not "Dhali."  It's a Mongolian word meaning "ocean."  "Dalai Lama" means "Oceanic Teacher" (i.e. "a teacher as great as the ocean").

Well, his brother Tony, the bootmaker, says it can go either way. [:D]
