Status: offline 		I am looking for an alternative to our painfully slow hillbilly dial up on the farm. Any providers I investigate seem to have horrid service and customer service.

Can anyone give me any information that would lead me to believe one is worth the cost?

Status: offline 		Absolutly NOT worth the cost....we tried it...out here in the woods with out of date phone lines and no cable either...

Not any faster than the 36K dial up we have, 80$ a month, and it cuts out everytime a cloud goes by

Have you checked into wireless? We are going that way I think once all the tower repairs get done...gotta have a tower nearby though for it to happen

Status: offline 		Will wireless work on multiple computers within the same home?

I don't mind paying up to $100/month because it will be split between several people. I just want to know if there is one of the providers that sucks versus another that is really good. I was doing some research on one company that advertises alot on our Directtv and the reviews were lousy.

The reason for the switch is that our dial up has gotten so bad that much of the time I cannot even get online. The computers just time out before it will even load a page. It is supposed to be running at 60K and now it is at 30K or less. Supposedly they are working on it and adding new lines. I heard that 6 years ago when I wanted a second phone line and we have yet to have that ability. So now it is either satellite or wireless.

Status: offline 		I actually work for Dish Network - delinquent accounts - so hopefully we will never speak :)  I know they offer quite a few different internet options.   It does seem to me that they are a bit higher than cable depending on the speed you are seeking.  I don't have specifics - but definitely worth a phone call.

Status: offline 		Wireless will work for every computer in the house that has a wireless card. You can buy these as a USB insert if your current computer doesnt have one. You can also make your printers and faxes wireless, in other words you can be sitting out on your front porch typing, hit print, and out comes paper from the printer in your office. There has to be a tower nearby, then you put a little antenna thingy on the eave of your roof, with a wire coming down into a router inside your house. After initial costs, ours is going to cost about $30/month.

Status: offline 		We use wireless.  We aren't quite on a farm but in a small city...well techinically it is a village.
The good thing about us is...I can see our tower from my computer room window.

We have 4 computers in the hosue, all for various uses.  They all work wonderfully off the same wireless signal.

We also pay 39.99 a month.  In California satellite was almost a hundred a month.  I had cable out there and was paying 65.  So, all in all in my experience wireless has been a great deal.  Well worth the price.

Status: offline 		Ohhhh that is good to hear, thank you!! Who are your providers if you don't mind me asking? I currently have Verizon for cell phone service, have for years, have been very pleased with them. They have great coverage in our area which is a good thing as not all cell providers do. I will have to stop in and talk to them and see what they can do.

Both computers are just months old so I am sure they would be just fine. I know my laptop has an internal card because when I bring it to work I can use it here on our service. I would assume the desktop does also, if not the USB insert would be the answer.

Status: offline 		We have two wireless providers here in town.  Conpoint.com and Telebeep wireless.  Telebeep.com

No idea though, how far you are from us or there range of how far they go.

Best to check the phone book.

I just got DSL through my phone company, it was
easy to hook up the modem and I was on-line with
great speed with-in an hour.
 
I have a bundle package with Qwest so the high speed
internet is only $26.99 a month. Modem to rent $5 a month
or you can buy it for $50 bucks in 3 payments.
All are working great for me, try contactingto see if your phone company
if they have it to offer yet. Anything with satellite  is going to
give you problems whenever there is bad weather happening,
thunderstroms, rain, snow anything that could disrupt the signal.
I am really happy with the service I chose.

Status: offline 		I'd advise you to steer clear of WildBlue, which is what you'll get from Dish Network or DirectTV. It's better than dialup over noisy rural phone lines, but it's way too expensive and quite slow. Also, their customer service is a joke. If your cellular service is with Verizon, as mine is, I'd look into their wireless internet service. I am looking forward to the day when Verizon places a tower so that I can kiss off my cheesy WildBlue satellite service.

Status: offline 		We have DirectTv......I think, that is not my bill to pay......and their satellite internet is Hughes Net which I have found out sucks also.

I am seriously going to talk to Verizon and see if that is a viable option. I know that a friend  has wireless of some sort on his laptop and it was working just fine when he traveled through a couple months ago. I just don't know for sure who his provider is.

Status: offline 		If you've got a phone line you should be able to get DSL thru somebody....???? I'd be leery of the sattelite option as I'm on Dish Network (tv) and like already mentioned any wet snow or thunder storm or plane passing by would interupt your work....

The problem with DSL in the country (my parents live in the country) is that you need to be within about 3 miles of a central office, and those tend to be a lot farther away in the boonies.  It's a no-go for a lot of rural folks.

party lines - that brings back memories.  It was a big deal when my parents were able to get a private line in 1978, and they still had to use an operator to complete long distance for a few years after that.

As far as DSL goes, we dont' have it either.  When you poll the phone company they tell you 5000 people in your area has to want it before they will run the lines.  We don't have 5000 people in our entire county let alone the neighborhood.

The wireless your friend had is probably earthlink.  They do have a wireless package.  I had it for work in California.  It was great...in the beginning I believe we were charged a per airtime charge.  I think in the end it was a blanket fee.  Of course I didn't get the bills but check it out.  If your friend got internet service you probably can as well.

Status: offline 		I'm mixed up here -- I was down at Staples tonight looking at wireless routers and the USB plugs for PCs as described above, and it looks like all that is nothing more than a substitute for connecting the cable with your internet connection directly to a pc because it connects to the router instead. However, that does look like a slick way to hook up multiple PCs to one internet connection and share resources like a printer.

It looks like you are using the term "wireless" as a synonym for "cellular phone" service, but it really isn't clear how the cellular connection hooks up to a pc. I see no reason to shell out dough for the router etc if the cellular thingy can plug right into the pc, but I'm obviously mising something.

BTW -- thanks LaT for starting this thread, 'cuz I've got crappy dial-up too and no cable or DSL available here.

Status: offline 		i have some customers on statalite they seem to like it... the best thing on the market for the consumer is fios whcih is faster and more stable then cable  dsl or digital subcriber line as it is known is only as fast by how  far  you are from the co or central office.. as for wireless the thing to remeber is Ebay  you can get a great deal on things on ebay
linksys is the most commong brand and easy to setup. the second best one is belkin. understanding the standards of what wiresless are you have heard the term 2.4mhz this is the radio freq that the router operates. there is also 5.0mhz  you have three types of connections 802.11a b and g   b only puts out 11 mbs per g puts out about 54 mb
a does about 107 mbs these are the standards also keep wireless phones way from your router they will cause it to drop ...

I work for a contractor that helps market fios. They tell me its what you say it is. I envy you if you have it in your area.

I've got a Verizon PC card and connect through Verizon Celular. Pay about 60 but its worth it not to have to restart a cable router 5 times a day while trying to stay connected while at work. Plus the obvious portability. I'd recommend it. Especially to any rural posters who still have strong Verizon cell service-its all you need. No phone line, faster (a little) and more reliable than DSL.

Anyways, are you saying that my cell phone sitting on my desk could be slowing me down, or is that just for wireless routers? If it is, how far away should it be, like am I slowing myself down when its in my pocket?
