Trust me, Popeye...pass on the little balls with the bells in 'em unless you can sleep thru kitty playing with it all night in your bedroom. And closing the door won't help, cuz he'll only bounce it off the door! And if you step on them, between the sharp edges on the ball, and the bell, it's good for a slice or two on the bottom of your feet....this is experience speaking on both counts! Petsmart has little mylar shiny ones that my one cat loves.....but never underestimate the value of the little plastic ring you peel off your milk cartons.....keeps 'em happy for hours! Petsmart also has these fishing pole looking things with a feather on the end of it......you'd be amazed at how high cats can jump....i call it "fishin' for kitties".

nyrisa.....I agree...you were a goner from the git-go......what an adorable little baby! Better get used to being wrapped around a little paw.....you may need a second job for all the goodies you're going to get for him.

edited cuz I found out that Bubba is the OTHER kitty.....

I am reminded of a time I said I was just going to stop at the shelter really quick to donate a 50# bag of dog food on my way to the horse stables. Then, of course, I had to take a look at the new building addition, which of course was for dogs.

I came home with a 110# golden retriever.

It's the eyes. I think all new shelter dogs go thru "Sad Face" class.

Well, look at it this way.......you doubled the return on your investment! *L* How wonderful of you to take one of the adults, and a big one, at that. They usually have little chance of being adopted, either because people are afraid of big dogs, or don't have space for a big one. We knew from the start that we'd have to definitely stay "small"....just no room for the big guys, although so many need homes.

I hadn't thought of the "return" factor!

And yes, I have adopted five dogs over the years and all but one was an adult. All have been large breeds, and except for the "Red Menace" (golden retriever) all have been german shepherds or GS mixes. I have also fostered and trained quite a few of them. German shepherds are my favourite breed and rehabilitating them is one of my passions. They are very special dogs, just not for everyone. They generally do not do well in shelters and the after effects of abuse can take a long time to overcome. Some never do recover 100%. I have a female that has her forever home at the farm because of this. Too much abuse for too long. It has been a long slow road with her. It is sad because she is a very sweet dog.

Soul, yes, "Bubba" is the cat I've had for 5 years now.
He's a big 15 pound Tom Cat Tabby, dark gray, black, white with those "tiger stripes" on him.
I got him at the pound in Stratham, N.H.
He was laying on his back, paws outstretched like me on the recliner watching tv.
I didn't think about that stuff with those plastic balls for cats.
Yes, probably a good idea to get him something else!

Sorry.......I guess that belongs in "hijack this!"

At least Bubba doesn't sound like he'll teach little kitty how to open drawers and cupboards, climb shelving like a ladder, and tell him where the catnip stash is hidden! KB taught my roomie's cats, and the other 2 I have that little trick....now he's decided that the fridge looks like an intersting place......I have to make sure he's not in it before I close the door! I swear. my kid wasn't this much trouble during the terrible two stage!

Eeeeek........how could the puppy chew through the wires to my speakers in seconds flat? Does he have bionic teeth or something? I think there is some barracuda in his background. Anyone know what the UL rating for a puppy is? *L*

Ohhhhhhhh, that is just the beginning!!

Which is why I have only adopted one puppy. My house is definately NOT puppy proof. Plus, they take more time than I can commit to right now.

Oh, honey, puppies chew EVERYTHING, and yes, they do have bionic teeth! Other things to watch for are your computer wires and your cell phone charger cord...anything that dangles. Lock your shoes in the closet. You'll need to get him some stuff to chew on. My baby girl loved those rawhide "pigs ears", she's a small breed and thank god, out of the maniacal chewing stage now (and into the maniacal lying at my feet and gazing up at me constantly stage, lol). But she would gnaw those things for hours at a pop. I know they say rawhide chew toys are dangerous and bad.....I've never had a problem with any dog I've ever had. Puppies just need to chew...and chew and chew and chew and chew, and if they don't have something of their own to chew, they'll chew carpet, furniture, your clothes, the tv remote, dental appliances, contact lenses, anything that won't run from them!

He sure is a cutie!

How many times have you read it on these forums? Take your time. Don't rush. Get to know one another! Then, one set of (oh god the most adorable big) brown eyes and you throw all that good advice out the window just like a new sub with fever. For shame, for shame!

Okay.. so I did the same thing and adopted Hobo in April. 4 years old, 70 lb lab/pit mixed that we rescued from the shelter and yeah, took about an hour from meet to collar. I'm bad too.

Such suckers we are......

Oh, another option for chewing.....Kongs! I love them!

After years of having them around to chew on, I had a really terrible bout with dogs and rawhides. One dog almost ended up in the vets office with dehydration.

So now we do Kongs, you can sqeeze treats inside them, even peanut butter. It gives them hours upon hours of chewing fun and as long as you get the proper size for the dog, no health risk.

nyrisa...watch out for the furniture also...one of out St. Bernard puppies cut het teeth on the rungs of a $1500 cherry dining room set....Mom was NOT pleased! She chewed up the rungs on 4 chairs and a captain's bench in less than 8 hours.

Try the Kongs.....all the K9 officers I know have them for their dogs.....the peanut butter idea is a good one, and there is actually one that you can put treats in and the dog has to roll it around to get them to fall out....at least there's exercise there! Also, the small stuffed animals are great......they aren't easily chewed up for some reason, but they can shake them, toss them around, and then flop down and sleep with them. The rope toys are good for play, but don't leave it around til the puppy has cut all of her teeth out.....dogs have a tendancy to pull out the threads and eat them.....not good for the intestines.

Take a walk thru the local Petco or Petsmart, they have all sorts of different solutions for chewing.....there's a bitter apple spray that works pretty good for things you can't protect by picking up. Totally harmless, but it really leaves a bad taste in the mouth for quite a bit.

heya nyrisa... smitten is adorable. Lots of luck! Dog are great. I recently put my dog to sleep in December and promised myself I'd never get another dog..but seeing that cute lil smitten,,,has me thinking lol...
