I don't agree with 'it's either the truth, a lie, or a mistake' bit... imo, white lies (ones that doesn't really matter) DO exist. I had an elderly neighbour who just loved hats - all shapes, sizes, and colours. Whenever we met, she'd ask me how I liked her latest aquisition. I always told her how lovely it was, and how something on it complimented her (ie her eyes, outfit, pooch's outfit, etc.). In reality, those hats looked like a nuclear bomb went of in a plant nursery full of steroid addicted plants. Nasty things. But my neighbour loved them, and who was I to say otherwise?
So, did I lie to her? Yep. Do I regret it? Nope. No one was hurt or in danger of anything (unless the flowers on the hats came alive... but then we'd all be doomed).
Basically, I think it depends upon a persons intent. Are you intending to hurt someone? Are you being malicious? Are you trying to be decent and avoiding hurting someones feelings unnecessarily?
Just my $0.02 worth. [:)]
But it's still a lie, even if done for a good reason, like sparing someone's feelings. That's all I'm saying.
There's a lot of people out there who would perfer to know that the compliments that they do get are sincere rather than gain compliments every time. Lying to such people, even if meant to be sweet and avoid hurt feelings, is determental to their faith in the honesty of others and may inspire misunderstandings in things that they really wanted to know about.
