Thats why my work has its own ring tone, if I am 'occupied' I don't answer. My mother, my best friend, my sister, MJ, and work all have their own ring tones as well; I can identify them in my sleep, an I have. If work calls an I am out with someone, I let it go to VM, unless He is in the men's room, and then I keep it short {would I go in, heck no.. if I am with MJ, then oen or both of us has traveled hours, so heck no I would NOT go in}, otherwise, I ONLY answer for emergancies, and my mother and bestfriend would KNOW that I was 'occupied' and to not call. My munchkin calls me before he goes to bed while I am out, but, I plan for that, an I left the man I am with know that he will call me around a certain time to tell me 'good night' and 'I love you.'

First of all, I doubt I would answer my phone.
IF I did, I would say, "NO, I am far, far, away at a previous engagement"

If I'm not on call or expected to be reachable, I never would have had the phone on at all.

But if I was on call or expected to be able to be reached, and wasn't the only person available, I'd tell them to try the others first.

If it came down to me and was necessary, then I'd go.

And I'd encourage my partner to do the same.

if you set out for a once in a lifetime evening, a night in the penthouse suite of a hotel, dinner wine, the works, having a beautiful evening at the expense of your partner, regardless of their orentation, to have this happen. . . . .

Just then your cell phone rings, you look at me and answer it, it is work, they want to know if you are able to go back in, someone has called in sick, though  you are not their last option they have rung you in the hopes that you will say yes, since you have always before. .. I look at you and watch your reaction. You open your mouth to say something, I turn away and leave you to converse on the phone. . .  would you go? would you stay? this is hyperthetical and just out of curiosity really

cheers

This brought back such joyful memories of dating a surgeon for a year. I lost count of the number of times I was left midway through a romantic evening or weekend because duty called. Gee, perhaps that is part of the reason why I no longer date him. Lesson learned.

Personally, if this happened now and I were in a relationship, neither phone would even be on let alone in the room. If that much thought and preparation went into the evening to begin with I would be damned sure to arrange that neither would be expected to be available for the evening or weekend.

I would say......

"How did you get my private number? Call me again outside work hours and I'll have you in court for stalking. There ain't going to be any electronic tagging in this set-up, or being at your beck and call. See you Monday morning. Bye".

and turn to you and say......"What a wanker eh? Chips, please......no, nothing on them".

It wouldn't have happened with me. I always switch my phone off on such occasions.

No way would i go in.  It would be rude to my date and i am sure a big disappointment.  i agree about the pain in the ass cell phones are - i don't have one, don't want one but will probably have to cave in one day if a job requires it. People look at you when you say you don't have a cell like you have two heads.  i have no desire to be contacted 24/7 - if i am out - leave a messsage at home.

I have people in my life who, based on my telling them I am seldom home and I check phone messages at home about once a month, and the only way to get in touch with me is my cell phone, get angry because I did not return their call.  No mention of the fact that they have a private number and did not leave a message.

Then they tell me I dont answer my cell phone, and I respond "If I did not answer my cell phone it is for one of several reasons.

1)  Private caller (they can leave a message)
2)  I am working (get fired if I answer the phone)
3)  I am driving (get a ticket if I talk on the phone)
4)  Am sleeping

I have gotten the response a couple of times after this "That is why we called you at home."

No one is irreplaceable.
I am not your final option.
Why would I have my cell phone on in this situation?
This is all about me.
No I am not going in...I am staying right here and enjoying this long planned and sought event.
