JustCatherine -> what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 4:55:02 PM)

if you set out for a once in a lifetime evening, a night in the penthouse suite of a hotel, dinner wine, the works, having a beautiful evening at the expense of your partner, regardless of their orentation, to have this happen. . . . .

Just then your cell phone rings, you look at me and answer it, it is work, they want to know if you are able to go back in, someone has called in sick, though  you are not their last option they have rung you in the hopes that you will say yes, since you have always before. .. I look at you and watch your reaction. You open your mouth to say something, I turn away and leave you to converse on the phone. . .  would you go? would you stay? this is hyperthetical and just out of curiosity really

cheers

This is a no-brainer for me....Let them call someone else, I'm not going in. In the end, I value my relationships with those I love more than any job.

Normally my sentiment would be that one works to finance their life so a good life should always take precedence. BUT, I can see some possible exceptions. The OP did not specify the nature of the work. If for example, the one being called in was a Doctor or Nurse who is being called to respond to a life or death situation then saving life comes before any enjoyment of it. Same would be true for a Medivac Helicopter pilot, or the pilot of a small jet used to transport a needed donor organ. So if it's not a lifesaving type of employment I have to ask, Why is the cell phone even turned on? For an evening of the nature described it really should be off in the first place.

Level -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 7:12:42 PM)

Hell no, I would not go. [:D]

My dream evening would be to have a penthouse room, with a gorgeous view of New York (or another major city), in winter, with the snow falling outside the huge glass windows...... me, and a young lady with a revved up libido, naked, wrapped up in blankets on the floor....

Work? No.

in this case, some must die, way of the world

Quivver -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 7:16:50 PM)

considering cell phones usually show the number calling, I wouldnt have answered it!

mnottertail,
Would you seriously be able to continue a relationship with anyone who did not try to save life in order to have an evening out? I suspect that alone would destroy any chance of that relationship going anywhere. If you are in the life and death business your own life does have to be subordinated at times. But that's the only case I can think of when that phone should even be switched on. This scenario does specify a fancy setting, none of the other patrons are going to appreciate the taking of cell calls that are not real emergencies.

SugarMyChurro -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 7:23:52 PM)

Quivver is right.

I probably would not have even looked at the phone in the first place though - it would have been on silent mode since I am on my time and following through on a special plan for the evening/weekend. I'd have my mobile on me and fully charged in case of some kind of emergency - my emergency needs, not those of work or anyone else.

mnottertail -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 7:28:42 PM)

Where might you have been when my parents died?  Saving the world, or what?

I am not guilty because the chinese are communist, nor am I because people die without my adjudication.

I took my father in the emergency room for a heart attack once (both of us very very very A) and once he got done reading the chanker mechanic the riot act about what it means to be the resident as opposed to slurping on some nasty ass at a lake cabin, we got his heart attack treated.  I would be kinda like the blond guy in Dogma----if you can reach that far............LOL

Lashra -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 7:31:09 PM)

I own my own company but if I was working for someone else...hell no screw 'em[:D] If I had something that nicely planned out and it cost someone a pretty penny..no.

Find out who's responsible for the decision to make the call and give them hell, at my earliest convinence.

Still, if it were me, I'd likely have picked up out of curiousity, then hung up the moment that they said something that revealed the disinteresting nature of the call.

ATT tried to get me to go back to their service tonight (a cell phone is a requirement for the job, unless one wants to spend their entire life never taking a break) and I pointed out to them that the extremely well-paid longshoremen tend to be fairly particular about their cellular service.

I pointed out that I gave up with ATT when their stupid phone never connected in the harbor, they want customers they should position a cellular station down in the harbor so people can actually use their phone.  Said Verizon works marginally better, but if ATT starts to function down there I would probably switch back.

I had a job once where I had to be pageable and able to leave at a moments notice.

After 4 months hanging out around the house, goofing off with my yard apes, remodeling, running errands, etc., I got a page from work and was told to go to the customer to repair something.  I told my ex-wife I had to leave.  She angrily berated me for leaving in the middle of the day to do my job because she had something to do.  I looked at her for a moment and said "I get paid a lot of money to be available, and I never have to actually do anything but wear a pager, hang out at home, be with my kids, remodel, etc., and the one time this month I actually have to go do a job, you have a conniption fit."

For me it would depend on the job.  If I have a job where I am required to leave at a moments notice, I will have gotten an agreement from my date that it might happen before we go out.  If she has issues with that, I will pick a time and let my company know I am not going to be available and take her out on that night.

velvetears -> RE: what would you do ??? (7/6/2007 9:28:59 PM)

No way would i go in.  It would be rude to my date and i am sure a big disappointment.  i agree about the pain in the ass cell phones are - i don't have one, don't want one but will probably have to cave in one day if a job requires it. People look at you when you say you don't have a cell like you have two heads.  i have no desire to be contacted 24/7 - if i am out - leave a messsage at home.
