Police: Shoppers stepped over victim
By ROXANA HEGEMAN, Associated Press WriterWed Jul 4, 7:57 AM ET

As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.

The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.

Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation

perhaps the five shoppers will end up in a cell like the end of the jerry sienfeld show...for not helping .
in a moment of seriousness (rare for me) ,,how tragic that a woman had to die, because people were either too afraid, or just didnt give a damn?
and the one who took the pic??? needs to have thier ass whipped but good :(

Camera phones don't come boxed with ethics.

Or humanity.

People just don't care these days.

stella40 -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:14:19 PM)

"Whoever is found near someone in danger of losing their life or suffering severe injury and who does not help that person, without themselves risking death or injury, shall face up to 3 years imprisonment."
Article 162 of the Polish Criminal Code.

Poland appears to be the only country I know that legislates on this sort of situation. I'm hoping there are others.

I don't know whether I'm more shocked that someone took a picture on their cellphone or I'm more shocked because something like this doesn't surprise me.

And the irony is that half these people will do all they can to stop you if you're about to pick up the last basket from the pile or the last loaf of bread from the shelf.

The older I get the less I understand some people.

Is this free market economy and consumerist society really better? Is this what we call civilisation?

CrimsonMoan -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:16:33 PM)

at the rate we are going kids and women will be snatched from the street in BROAD daylight in front of 20-30 people and no one will bat an eyelash

soultoshare -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:37:25 PM)

Unfortunately, this is the society that we have become.  Nothing shocks me any more......one question...where was the clerk?  I don't know how it is there, but here in the Phoenix area, the convenience stores and their cameras are monitored by an off-site location....I know this because I've taken calls for something going on in one from the monitoring agency.  Sometimes, Big Brother isn't such a bad thing.  Too bad it wasn't practiced in this situation, at least help would have been called.

KimN -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:39:13 PM)

It's too bad they won't be able to charge the shoppers with a crime. What they did was totally disgusting. They should all be horsewhipped in the public square. The guy with the cell phone can take pictures of it.

SubinMaine -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:47:48 PM)

i can't believe there wasn't news coverage for this...what an outrage and a shame.

nearnyccouple -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 3:50:12 PM)

Unfortunately, neither do people.

This reminds me of a story out of L.A., where a woman was in the ER of a hospital, bleeding internally, spitting up blood, her husband begging for help, and the entire medical staff ignored her for hours.  They requested she be transferrred to another hospital, no on acted on it and when they called for an ambulance to take her somewhere else, they were told she needed to be released from the first hospital and that they werent able to do it. She died as the police were getting her ready to transport elsewhere. If she had been treated, she most  likely would have lived.

Unfortunately we live in a society where many feel they are entitled to the best and if something doesnt directly affect them, they just dont give a damn.

Its very sad.

A delay of any minutes in calling 911 is unforgivable, especially when there is a clerk in the store with a phone at the register.

It is tragic that this woman died.  I'm not all that sure it is because people were afraid, or didn't give a damn.  Did they know what to do?  Maybe they felt helpless and for that reason ignored the situation.  This is, after all, a society in which we depend on the police for public safety, fire department for putting out fires and ambulance transportation, and the Government in many forms taking care of us from cradle to grave so we don't have to take responsibility for our own safety and well being.

In California, as in some other places, the five might have been sued for causing damage in attempting to render aid.  This is an area of the law where I think we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.  A burglar can sue and collect from a home-owner after breaking and entering if bitten by a dog or even cut by the glass window broken to gain entry.

In the stabbing case, the Good Samaritan laws do apply.  In Basic and Advanced First Aid, EMT, Paramedic, and Mobile Intensive Care Nurse training, it is stressed that the Good Sam laws protect you as long as you are rendering aid within the scope of your training and practice.  Note that the Good Sam laws do not protect you from being sued.  They only serve as a protection when you can prove in a court of law that what you did was within your scope of training.

We were also trained that once you start treatment, you cannot stop treatment except under some very specific conditions.  If you stop before those conditions are met, you can be charged with patient/victim abandonment.  If the person dies, you can be charged in causing or permitting death.  Much easier to not get involved.

In the case of a stabbing, would you know whether to remove the knife or leave it in?  How would you bandage a wound?  Do you know how to keep a lung from collapsing?  Do you know the signs of collapse?  What do you, as an untrained civilian, do that I as a trained professional might or might not?  Could you justify that in a court of law?

Beginning to see that it might just be easier to step over the victim and avoid all that stress and risk?  In California, if I'm in my Civvies, and I'm not displaying a Star of Life or any other sign or symbol of being medically trained, I do not have the duty or obligation to respond within my scope of practice.  If I don't have to, then the untrained people don't have to either.  And sometimes that's better.  The first time you see someone with what was a minor injury or one that was not at the time life threatening brought in dead because some civillian 'helped' it will turn your guts inside out.  Been there.  Seen that.  Barfed all over the utility sink in the ER.

Why commit the time?  Because we do care.  Why render help?  What if it was us lying there?  I for one do stop to help, and I once got fired from a nursing job because I was rendering aid at an accident and was late for work.  That won't stop me, but the problems that helping can create for us can be rather daunting.

What's the solution?  I think everyone needs to be trained in basic first aid and CPR with AED use.  I don't agree it should be mandated, but everyone probably would benefit from having that training as part of high school health class or something similar.

To the OP:   I worked in a couple of LA hospitals.  In the Emergency Department.   I know it happens.  I know it is relatively rare.  Otherwise, it wouldn't be sensational enough to attract the attention of the news mills.

Sorry for the rant.  It is aimed at no one in here, or anyone in particular, but rather expresses my frustration with the way things are presented in society in general, and in the way we so often accept what we are spoon-fed by the media.

I do agree, uwince, the one who took the picture needs to be publically flogged, preferrably naked on the City Hall Whipping Post, especially if it was a good looking woman.  :-)

"Is this free market economy and consumerist society really better? Is this what we call civilisation?"

I think it is quite a stretch to make the free market the cause of these people's actions. More likely it is a lack of values that is the cause.

As for the hospital that nearnyccouple mentions, that is King Drew Hospital here in Los Angeles. This hospital may finally be closed down and not a moment too soon. It has been riddled with patient deaths and corruption for years. It was originally built as a "Black" hospital after the Watts Riots. Another example of good intentions leading to a bad outcome.

CrimsonMoan -> RE: Did the shoppers work at an LA hospital?? (7/4/2007 4:54:50 PM)

Craft i get what you are saying totally but i'd rather get in trouble for doing somethign instead of nothing. Jefferson said, "Evil prevails when Good men do nothing." As for the one who took the picture he'd better hope he doesn't meet any of this woman's family cuz he more than any of them has earned the ass whoppin.  I don't know its just me,I was raised believing if you saw somethign wrong and there was something you could do you did it.  Case in point a five yr old pinned down a rabid fox to keep it away from his younger siblings and the other kids outside playing. He got bit in the process and now has the fun of dealing with Rabies treatment. Do you know what the lil boy said when it was all over? He asked for a bandaid and said he didn't want to fox to hurt his brother. Now why is it lil kids can do things like this but adults can turn a blind eye to a fellow human that lays dying?
