ORIGINAL: frustratinggirl Can someone explain to me the BDSM and gothic culture connection, just curious about why there seems to be such a correlation betwen the two. To the extent that such a correlation may exist I don't see how it could be anything but an historical accident. Whether that's right or wrong, you needn't be contrained in any way by the apparent tendency of so many other other people to march in lockstep. If someone can't explore emotional or psychological "darkness" without putting on dark clothing, well that's just where they are at, and that's fine. Then again, if they make their style choices not out of any need but simply out a preference that happens to be terribly common, that's fine too. But there's a whole world of colors and shades, symbols and metaphors, myths and paradigms for you to fill your life with. If you happen to be wondering whether a person can have a rich, full and well populated (quality and quantity) kink life without settling for all the shopworn cliches, the answer--arrived at empirically--is yes. Then again, the things that get shopworn may be that way because they work so damn well. So I wouldn't suggest rushing to eschew the "usual" just because it happens to be usual.
