Can someone explain to me the BDSM and gothic culture connection, just curious about why there seems to be such a correlation betwen the two.

I am very interested in goth I love the "darkness" of it, and I consider bdsm to fall into that same darkness catagory same with being a pagan witch. Maybe it is the whole style, corsets and collars, I dont know. But for me personally I think the link is that both things relate back to a very dark primal part of my soul.

Seperate things that like many others, meld. Both are considered sub cultures by many, and few subcultures blend largely with mainstream. Just a possibility.

Honestly?

A LOT of it depends on the age of the person.  I find a lot of "goth kids" and BDSM TNG'ers doing it because they think it makes them "special", or "different" or "outlandish" or they do it to piss off mom and dad.  Give 'em a couple - three years and they outgrow it.  Kinda like emo  *rolls his eyes*

For some older folks though, it's a part of who they are.  Sometimes.  And sometimes they just want to be "different", "special", "part of the culture" or get laid...
*grins and shrugs*

Okay, so I'm a cynic.
YIK,
- Geoff

There's also the pain/sex/darkness/costuming/power edge- goth and bdsm subcultures both celebrate all of those and easily feed into eachother.

There's a lot of crossover with a lot of the subcultures in the US.

With all due respect to the genuine Goth/Bdsm'ers out there, for many it is about shock value. When it's no longer shocking to be a Goth, where do you go next? I know - BDSM will shock Mommy. It's also due to the confusion regarding the word "fetish." For some, fetish is a description of a fashion trend. (S&M = Stand and Model, lol) for others it is a need. Let's picture this scenario - a "fetish" event is advertised. What a shock the organisers would get if people with a nappy fetish showed up! They don't really know the true meaning of the word. I see it as similar to swingers and BDSM - there is some cross over, but all swingers are not into BDSM any more than all Goths are. But peer pressure means that many "play the game."

My feelings about goth are pretty much summed up by the Saturday Night Live skits on the topic.

It isn't a surprise to me at all.  Some people are interested in BDSM because of the 'look' and 'feel' with the activities secondary.

There's the added logic that people who feel 'anti-conformist' would find Goth as a stepping stone towards BDSM; not from a genuine desire to be Goth or in BDSM, but as a means of avoiding being seen as 'normal.'  This isn't such a bad thing; what people first dabble into can become a satisfying direction and purpose in life.

It to me is simply a preference, a preference to wear black or leather or leashes or diapers et al: by persons who also like BDSM-D/s M/s etc:a kink of fashion :0)..Tempting

I'd venture to say that it has a great deal to do with look.  The leather, metal studs, piecerings, gothic settings, dungeons, whips and chains, masks, corsets, everyone wearing black, and depending on where you are loud music and dark overtones.  Add blood play, needles and knives and then a typical play scene can with the right description can seem like it's out of a horror movie.

But of course that's just a veneer of perception.

Because (and no offense intended) people who dress in gothic style tend like shock value. Floggers, handcuffs, collars and cuffs tend to have a certain shock value when worn in public.

Edited to add: Also, both like corsets. But the only group of goths I'm aware of with any sort of history are the Visigoths (SP?) and as far as I'm aware, they didn't have exceptionally high rates of BDSMers.

To the extent that such a correlation may exist I don't see how it could be anything but an historical accident. Whether that's right or wrong, you needn't be contrained in any way by the apparent tendency of so many other other people to march in lockstep.

If someone can't explore emotional or psychological "darkness" without putting on dark clothing, well that's just where they are at, and that's fine. Then again, if they make their style choices not out of any need but simply out a preference that happens to be terribly common, that's fine too.

But there's a whole world of colors and shades, symbols and metaphors, myths and paradigms for you to fill your life with.

If you happen to be wondering whether a person can have a rich, full and well populated (quality and quantity) kink life without settling for all the shopworn cliches, the answer--arrived at empirically--is yes.

Then again, the things that get shopworn may be that way because they work so damn well. So I wouldn't suggest rushing to eschew the "usual" just because it happens to be usual.

In my opinion it's becouse darkness, pain, obedience, dungeons, slavery, bondage, etc.
and additionally I would take it that way (the look):
gothic -> cyber gothic -> clothing, accessories -> fetish -> bdsm

probably moreless inline with others

Because all the Gothic people are into death, pain, punishment and wickedly evil things such as BDSM... they are like moths drawn to a burning flame.

i guess i've got it all backwards... i've always been interested in BDSM, but find myself attracted to the Goth subculture primarily for the fashion. Goth chicks are hawt

So what happens when Goth and BDSM become mainstream?  Will all the true rebels be wearing twinsets and pearls, or tracksuits, or a nice floral frock?

There are a lot of Goth style BDSMers.  There are a lot of DnD/RenFaire BDSMers. This place is crawling with Christian BDSMers.  There are a ton of politically liberal BDSMers.  There are a lot of...

I think that there are people involved in BDSM who come in different flavors and from different places.

No, then they go "underground" to the "true pure" places.

There's always another way to be subversive.  Personally I'd LOVE if everything I did became boring and nothing to take note of tomorrow.
