Status: offline 		if you got a notice to be in a jury...would you do it?

if no, why?

if not, how would you attempt to get out of it?

I had a job that paid me to do jury duty. 

I got to spend two weeks playing Bridge and yakking with people.

I was on two juries.

I thought it was a nice change of pace.

Status: offline 		I can understand why some people would find it a hardship to serve on a jury, and if it truly is a hardship you only have to tell them it is and they generally will let you go.  They don't want people serving on a jury that are all pissed about having to be there.  On any jury selection all you have to do is say that you have strong feelings one way or the other about the topic involved and the opposing side of the conflict will probably de-select you and send you home.  Of course, in some trials each side only has a certain number of people they can object to ( i can't remember the correct term) and if they have used their allotment of objections you might have to serve anyway.

I served on 2 juries, was jury foreman on one of those, and enjoyed it, finding it to to be a great learning experience.  The cases weren't anything exciting...one dealt with an illegal immigrant and the other dealt with stolen and forged credit cards and ID's.  I would have no objection to serving on a jury again if needed.  My only hope would that it would be for a more exciting trial.

Status: offline 		Mine came up at a bad time, and I asked to be deferred to the summer, when I had time. This was allowed, as they had cases scheduled, but I was warned this was a one time thing. I sat through the voir dire, and could have manipulated myself out of it, but (1) I do take civic resposibility seriously and (2) I was off and didn't mind picking up a little cash at the time.

I sat listening to bluster for a week. Then, just before it went to the jury--they decided to settle.

Justice at work, the judge explained.

Sigh.

Wow, that's a surprise because I was under the impression that if you just ignore a jury summons, you can be fined, jailed or both!

I've received summons twice in the mail. Each time my response was "not a citizen". But I'd go if I was! :)

Status: offline 		There a number of past threads and I am going to post two links here as they were both recent topics (discussed in the past 3 months).  My understanding is that you can ask to be excused from jury duty and I am sure that giving the court an honest answer and reason for asking to be excused would be the best option.

(In answer to your post - yes I would do jury duty and have done it in the past)

Status: offline 		I have been called many times, although I never had to sit on the pannel.   I believe it is a duty that must be performed.  My employer paid us for our time (although we did have to give them whatever we got paid for being on the panel).   We had one guy that I worked with had to sit on a high profile 6 month long capital murder trial.  He was the only one under 60 on the panel.   The judge took into account the length of the trial when determining hardship and let just about anyone not retired off.  My ex was selected for one where the bailif walked out in the street and picked the first 15 people he could find to sit on the panel.  They had found that all the prospective jurors that were in the waiting room were unacceptable for some reason or another.

I am fairly confident I will never receive a notice for jury duty, again; ever.
 
How did I do it? I had a good reason; at least as far as those who dismissed me, from my first and last turn to serve.

Status: offline 		I'm scheduled the 1st week in July. Hoping to get on a nice celebrity trial and sell a secret story of the Jury room book. More likely I'll be stuck in a boring law suit lottery case. Good thing about LA is you call the night before and if they don't need you, you don't go. No more sitting around waiting. Twenty years ago I was called and had to sit in a room for 2 weeks. Never got called on a case, but learned how to play backgammon.

Status: offline 		A few years ago when I was out of work I actually volunteered for jury duty. Spent about 8 months doing so. I was told that since I did this I would probably never be called up again. Got to sit in on some very interesting cases and also learned alot on how things work.

We are looking into forming a committe to look into a study to discuss the possibilities of making recommendations to the chair so that it may be considered as an option sometime in the near future, at least we're thinking about it.

Status: offline 		I've been called several times. Had to ask to be excused once, due to a doctor's appointment out of state, and was excused, no questions asked.

A couple other times, called the recorded message line the night before, and the group including me was not needed.

Had to go in and was selected a couple of times, but in the first case, they settled out of court and the trial was cancelled. The second case (a domestic abuse case), everyone arrived but the plaintiff. Since she didn't show, and had not called the prosecutor, the charges against the defendant were dismissed, and we were all sent home.

The jury process can be tedious, but it is necessary, and we were always treated with courtesy, and thanked for our time and cooperation. I would not try to duck jury duty, if/when my number comes up again.

In Florida, they are pulled from the driver's license registry, because so many people were avoiding jury duty by not registering to vote. Kind of a sad commentary on our times, I think.

I completely agree with you! And not registering to vote? How could anyone do that? I worked with someone who had never voted and I just couldn't comprehend her reasoning - or more like lack of reasoning. Even if there is no one you feel is worth voting for, it's exercising your right to vote. There are too many in this world who do not have this right and do not have this freedom. To me, it is a slap in the face to anyone who can't vote to purposely refrain from voting. And I believe it is an affront to all those who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. It's so sad that most don't vote. I wish they would realize what they are giving up.

Status: offline 		I can think of plenty of reasons not to vote. I voted for Bush. I hate the guy. I just hate Kerry more. Now I get ignorant sacks of sh** telling me I shouldn't have voted for him. Why? Let's all go back in time and see what would have happened if we'd picked Kerry. What slightly different pile of sh** would we be in now?

Given such wonderful choices next time around, I'll just save my vote.
