slaverosebeauty -> Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:04:49 PM)

I know that lifestylers come in all shapes and sizes, from all corners of everywhere, from various backgrounds, etc. In my experience with past partners I noticed that for the most part, past Tops I have been with are have a military or law enforcement background, past or present. Most have retired of left military service, been in some form of law enforcement {in FBI, Homeland Security, Police Officers, etc}, I found it interesting; at least that I am drawn to these men or visa versa, yet, at the same measure how men with these professions or backgrounds are drawn to lifestyle as well.

We {my current Top-type person/partner} an I were talking about professions of Tops and bottoms, he is ex-military {currently in a position of 'power; for lack of a better term} an I work in offices {secretarial, admin, etc}; both of our professions & backgrounds are congruent to our 'place' in this lifestyle. We {ok, I started it} are curious as to what others do for a living as well as if their 'day' job is along the same lines as their 'other' part of their life or if its the opposite.

My questions as it were ~
*What's your background and profession??
*Is your background congruent with your current 'position' within lifestyle [ie an authoritative position at work AND within your lifestyle relationship(s)] or is it the opposite?

For the Top-types ~
*Are you ex/current military? Law Enforcement?
*Are you in a more white collar or what most would consider 'less authorative position' at work?

For the bottom-types~
*Are you ex/current military? Law Enforcement?
*Are you in a more 'authoratitive' position at work?

{please NO flames, or being rude to eachother, keep things nice}

szobras -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:16:13 PM)

I make my living as a self employed Sculptor/Stone carver, for 20 years now. My wife is a switch, and we live with an equal authority dynamic.

earthycouple -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:19:16 PM)

I'm a nurse and often spearpoint projects and "needs to get dones" when I'm gainfully employed vs. working at home and going to school, as I do now.

Very seldom am I a follower...ever...for any reason in general life.  I love a great idea, I love to make things happen, I love to work with others.

I have group projects due with each class I take and I get all wound up if I can't be the person who turns in the final project for a grade.  I want to have final say.  Anyone can be project leader  but I want to know the work turned in meets my expectations first.

TemptingNviceSub -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:19:37 PM)

I have been a nurse for 30 years, I identify as a submissive, as far as authority at work..no more so than any other nurse..:0)...Tempting

I am a Manager of a Photo Department for Walgreens. College grad, academic overachiever

I manage at work, but I am in customer service, so while I am authoratative at work with those working under me, I am service oriented and very quick to please the customers.  I am in a good trusted position and my managers trust me and turn to me more than average.

Neither, though I had considered the military, I have physical limitations that would have blocked my entry anyway.

Depends on which end you look at it from, though I am definately not white collar.  Customer service is less authoratative when it comes to serving the customer, but I deal with the nasty and coniving ones who try and get away with things as well as manage 5 people under me.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:26:50 PM)

TemptingNviceSub, my nurse practitioner is VERY authorative, she yells at me on a semi-regular basis, so being a nurse can be a VERY strong position.

{looks around} I KNOW that we have people who are ex/current military and law enforcement around. I see you post on the boards, please chime in.

Joseff -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:43:57 PM)

I am a silk screen printer, that is my profession, and I have never been in the military or law enforcement. The only authority I wield is my considerable knowledge and experiance in the business.

daddysblondie -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:50:48 PM)

I'm a high school teacher. Guess you could say I'm authoritative at work since I can run a classroom of 35 16 and 17 year olds successufully. A friend recently said she was surprised by the dichotomy of me as a strong, independent woman and me as a submissive female.

DommeChains -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 8:56:55 PM)

I am nurse, ex military and many years experience as a nurse in correctional facilities and working with a large metro police/county booking facility.

My job does entail a lot of responsibility for ensuring others follow through so I wield authority in that sense.  Also I am an integral member of the decision making team for client care.

I am definitely a femdom in both private and professional lives.

marieToo -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 9:11:11 PM)

My professional background is in the dental field as a chairside assistant and radiographer; I do keep my license active, though I haven't worked in that field for some 10 years.  I have a fascination with teeth and enjoy working inside mouths.  Don't know what that says about my submission, if anything at all, but it sort of ruined me for french kissing.

I'm currently an ebay seller and I love working for myself and being my own boss.  At some point in my life, it became my goal to be self-employed--it didn't much matter how.   I failed at my first couple endeavors, then finally found my niche.  Maybe I'm kinda "dom" that way.

No military in my background or family at all, but military men and cops (to some extent) already have a point in their favor with me.  They simply turn me on--could have something to do with submission.

Einzelganger -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 9:14:44 PM)

My questions as it were ~
*What's your background and profession?

First, I was a professional violinist.  I performed my first paying gig when I was 11, at a little place called the White Wolf Cafe.  Due to my age, everyone naturally thought I was going to be cute, and sound like shit.  I didn't.  I got enough tips that I decided I'd stick with this whole violin thing...I've played in a few local orchestras, etc. as well, but the position I like least is principal first violinist, a.k.a. Concertmaster (or Concertmistress).  I hate it.  I would usually do the challenges to move up in position until I was Assistant Concertmaster, then purposefully screw the pooch on the last challenge.  It didn't pay enough extra to be worth the stress of being in charge...I never liked it.

Also, I'm a recently retired BMW mechanic; I did it for eight years (yes, I started rather young...technically illegally, but I wanted to learn by doing, as I was already reading every text book I could find on the subject.  My family's Volvo mechanic, who also serviced most other Euro cars, was willing to help me out).  I hit the top, got my BMW Master Technician certification, won two national BMW competitions, and the dealer's manager said a very stupid remark to me.  So I left, and took over a hundred of his best customers with me.  I still work on their BMW's in my driveway; I really enjoy doing it, especially for the ones who are hard up for cash or need an emergency repair...it makes me feel warm and fuzzy, and all that jive.

Now I'm in training to be a pilot.  I won't mind being in charge in the cockpit since I'll be the only one there; I'm just off doing my own thing.

*Is your background congruent with your current 'position' within lifestyle [ie an authoritative position at work AND within your lifestyle relationship(s)] or is it the opposite?
Quite possibly, yes.  I hate being in charge, so I've always been in an assistant-type position.  I've declined such positions as shop foreman, team leader (at the shop), shop manager, service manager, etc.  I don't want to be in charge; I want to be one of the grunts.  I find it rather calming/comforting to follow orders, concentrate on the quality of my work, and do my best job.  Wether this is my submissive nature or a lack of leadership skills is something I've never given any serious thought, although it's likely.

For the bottom-types~
*Are you ex/current military? Law Enforcement?

No.  I could never be a police officer.  I could be in the military, since it's mainly following orders (assuming I don't rise in rank, which due to my lack of leadership skills, I'd probably be a bottom feeder for a long time).  I also can't stand dealing with the absolute moron/lowlife types, so again, I couldn't be a police officer, although I wouldn't mind working in their motorpool.

*Are you in a more 'authoratitive' position at work?  Nope.  I never have been.  In my current job, I've already turned down my first leadership position, even though if offered me slightly better pay; it's just not worth it to me.

I hope I wasn't too long-winded, but I just had two Mt. Dews, so I'm a little wired right now...

BlindDescent -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 9:21:36 PM)

Retrospectively I see I have been in a leadership postion most of my adult life.  Top roles are those which have the power to influence others quite deeply...regardless of title.
RN 30 yrs. (25 of which were in psychiatry, 5 ER.) Currently charge/triage nurse of a 56 bed ER. Active public speaker and past consultant for forensic sexual disorders as well as violent patient management and seclusion and restraint. Have been fortunate to open 4 new hospital units and or programs. Have always led my example regardless of official role.
Military; 6 yrs. Weapons specialist/safety officer(trained at Aberdeen Proving Grounds,Md.) then Dispensary operator for last 3 yrs of enlistment, after going into health care.
Social committee chairman then president for 5 yrs in my community assoc.
Rock band percussionist and manager for last 12 yrs..in bands drumming since 1966...Rhythm Master?
Community activist: variously over the past 30 yrs: School board advisor/mental health board advisor/youth soccer and lacrosse coach leading to 2 lacrosse state titles. (I still play goalie on occaision in a men's lacrosse league...balls come at 90mph)
Creatively I am an artist, writer, poetic eroticist with occaisional public readings /open mics poetry slams... and aforementioned musician. Personally and professioanlly, I unlock healing and set undeniable quietly spoken limits.
So much is about confidence and playing from one's strength. I am non competative; as I see life as inclusion rather than exclusion. I take shit from no one...there is simply no need to. My life is congruent in all spheres. I learned a long time ago that I am here to give the best of myself freely and without expectation...what I receive is an amazing harvest. That damn Zen shit works wonders.

I am a photographer; my boyfriend is a journalist.

Since neither one of us really 'identify' with any 'place' within the 'lifestyle', I would have to say no.

I have never been in the military; my boyfriend was.

Faramir -> RE: Professions and Backgrounds (6/6/2007 9:26:58 PM)

I was a Marine for 15 years: started off as an enlisted Infantryman (0311) and then later Tank Officer (1802), left as a Major.

I owned a financial services firm for several years, and sold that last year.

Now I teach freshman writing and am a doctoral candidate in a rhetoric program.

All of those, in different ways, are authority roles.  Clearly as a Marine NCO and Officer I had both statutory and institutional power, as an employer and business owner I had both authority over my employees and a leadership position managing client's assets.  As a newbie graduate assistant teacher I have an authority role in class, but I'm not in an authority position in general within the program.
