Well, if we in the US actually USED the death penalty instead of letting the perps sit in jail for 10-20 years filing appeal after appeal, maybe it would be a more effective deterrent.  With the advent of all the science and technology, putting the proper person in jail is getting easier and easier.  Look at the Middle Eastern countries where they have PUBLIC executions, China does the same, possibly other Asian countries do the same.  They waste no time in executing the perpetrators in these countries....often going from the courts to the gallows.  Yes, there will be those who say it's inhumane, cruel, "no one deserves to die that way", the poor person deserves mercy....my question to those who say this is where the hell was thekiller's sense of mercy when they took another's life for whatever cheap thrill they got?  The lack of respect for human life in this country is appalling.....and seems to be getting worse with each passing day, month, year....and trust me, if anyone ever did anything to my UM, there would be NO PLACE the bastard could hide......they'd be ALL MINE,  and they would suffer.

As for finding a genetic link for murder.....there are so many factors involved in why people kill, they may never find a true reason. You have gangbangers out there killing over drugs and turf, for initiations, or for just the hell of it.....spouses who just decide for whatever reason that homicide is cheaper than divorce......people who just "snap" and go to work and kill as many as they can.....Columbine, Virginia Tech.....no one will ever know the "why".  Yes, no one is safe anymore.....no matter how vigilant one is, there is always going to be that one unknown in the equation.  Here is a perfect example of that.

Keep in mind folks...this happened in broad daylight, in the middle of a busy retail store, in front of security cameras. Whoever did this had no fear of being caught...It was the last thing on their mind. Which leads me to believe that the attacker knows the victim. It makes no sense for this to be just some random killing. A kidnapper, rapist, or killer would not have made the risks this guy made.

Will the death penalty prevent this kind of thing...studies, statistics, and criminlology say no. Depending on what this crime is...crimes of passion won't be prevented by anything most of the time. A random killing? We really just dont know all the facts. However the stats say overall that the death penalty does not deter crime.

In cases dealing with serial killers, most of the time they know they will be caught and they want to be caught. Many times they will even play "cat and mouse" with the police. The death penalty wont deter them. In fact Richard Ramirez (aka: "The Night Stalker") after being sentenced to death laughed and told the judge, "Death comes with the territory. I'll see you in Disneyland." These people are just simply insane, death won't deter them.

Cyberdude, the death penalty isn't supposed to deter a crazy person.
It's for revenge for society and I think all executions should be public.
Shopping Mall parking lots can be dangerous any time of the day.
You're head should be on a swivel.
I've thought about going hunting a few times after I've seen a few really shady people, make myself look "weak" with body language that they'd key into and hope they attack and then boom, boom, boom, shoot right through my jacket.

On one hand, I pray that we do not become a monster in order to defeat a monster.

On the other hand, fuck it.  Kill the bastard and those who are like him, so they don't victimize any more people.

Just wondering.. does anyone have some real statistics on whether the death penalty is a real deterrent?
I know that in crimes of compulsion ,it (death penalty) has little,if any effect.

Would it discourage other people from doing the same thing?  Im not sure.  But it would certainly discourage the hell out of the person you executed.  HE won't be doing it again.  Good enough reason to for me, personally, to be pro death penalty.

It seems the better way would be to stop these people some way before they did the crime.

Ok.  But how?  Other than the floating psychics from that bad Tom Cruise movie, I mean.

Does anyone here think that it could be possible to rout out a gene or something for murderous impulses?

You mean eugenics?  I said earlier I was pro death penalty.  But I want to be clear.  I am pro death penalty for people that have actually committed a crime that deserves the death penalty (like making some kid's graduation present a horrible death in the backwoods for instance).  I am, however, strongly against the advanced supposition death penalty of genetic selection.

All you can do is pray for Kelsey, and the thousands of people never seen on CNN, that suffer similar fates.

Yes, MzMia it really is terrible.
Yes, I answered my own thread, and so what?

People with more than one profile often trip up eventually, and do this.

Except that she answered it with the same profile she started the thread with...I would imagine she was simply bumping up the subject in order for it to be commented on. your comment was rude...nor is this the proper time or place for any personal display of antipathy.

I do respectfully apologize to Mz Mia for hijacking her thread momentarily or overstepping to defend someone that needs no outside defense.

I'm not trying to sound like an ass but would we be talking about Kelsey Smith if she were fat and ugly, or black, hispanic or asian?

SDFemDom4cuck -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/7/2007 3:54:32 PM)

Having dealt with the death penalty on a first hand basis I can say that prior to my experience with it I was staunchly against it. There's a long post of mine regarding the situation on another thread that addressed the death penalty. I won't go into all the details here but it will suffice to say this.

I was informed that life in prison rarely means exactly that. The knowledge that the person that caused a great deal of grief within my family could possibly go free to do so again to someone else made me rethink my views. I can't say that the conclusion brought closure, comfort or any fulfillment of revenge...what it did do was ensure me that no other family would go through the grief that ours did by way of his actions.

Sorry Popeye, I respectfully disagree. No amount of "revenge" will satisfy those left behind in the aftermath of the murder of a loved one. Been there, done that...not buying what you're selling.

I have been following the story about Kelsey Smith since Sunday night.
For some reason, it just touched my heart.
She goes to the store, to buy a graduation present, in broad daylight.  She calls her mom to say she
is on the way home.  She has people there waiting for her, so she can go to a graduation party.
She JUST graduated from High School, just 18 years old.
Some horrible monster, follows her in the store...then forces his way in her car,
in the parking lot?
No one seems to see it and it is on video tape.

Her body was found tonight tonight in a heavily wooded area about 18 miles from
the Target parking lot.
I just saw her parents crying on t.v.
This makes me sad, what kind of damn world is this?
I hope they find the filth that kidnapped that poor child.

R.I.P. baby, sleep with the angels....  MyFox Kansas City | Latest On Kelsey Smith's Body Found

This is that chic that some guy followed her in to a Target, they said "a minute later".

I think it's just amazing that the cops were able to a) make the connection and b) send this psycho to the pen (awaiting) that fast.

There's some sick fucks in this world.

I remember when I was 19, going to community college and I always thought it was odd that women (then...my age) were so worried about guys (because they always asked me to walk them to their car)...and 7 years later I'm on a flight to Boston, reading this book about Ted Bundy...every father wanted his daughter to marry this man...educated, capable...he was "every man", hell...the state Governor at the time thought he'd make a great assistant DA....I couldn't put the book down, and yet every page made me sick....

After I finished the book, I thought to myself...."any woman that doesn't own an arc welder and doesn't weld the damn door shut every night when she goes home...just ain't fucking thinking straight".

There's going to be a whole load of psychologically damaged people coming back from Iraq soon who have been trained to snatch people off urban streets and kill and do god knows what else. :(
I just hope they spend a lot of money on social services and regular psych evaluations.

MzMia -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/7/2007 9:47:36 PM)

There are no real easy answers to dealing with criminals.
It is good that at least we care, and we continue to discuss criminal activities.
To ignore crime and stick our heads in the sand is to give up.
I know many people are kidnapped and murdered, or killed every day.
Any time an innocent person is murdered, it is a tragedy and I will never get
to the place that I am nonchalant about crime.
I don't lump all crimes and criminals in the same bucket.
Each case should be weighed fairly and dealt with.
But there are many clear cut cases these days, that when there is irrefutable evidence,
that the consequences should be severe.

Vendaval -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/8/2007 2:04:34 AM)

General reply -

The city where I used to live has a mall with many high school kids and local gang-bangers hanging around, looking to steal stuff, get in fights, pick up girls, etc.  I had to contact security once to get rid of a guy following me around.  And one of my friends screamed and ran to get away from a would be mugger or rapist. (This was during daytime hours, not at night.)

I feel horrible about what happened to Kelsey but do not think that capital punishment will necessarily
deter this type of crime.  And killing her murderer will not bring her back to life.  I would go for life in
prison with no possibility of parole or release for this type of crime if the sentencing could be made secure.

MzMia -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/8/2007 10:54:23 AM)

Well the suspect that they are holding is married with a 1 year old child.
Good looking young man, typical guy next door.
I can't wait until the trial, I feel sorry for his wife and son if he is the perpetrator.
It just goes to show, it is usually the people you least expect that are responsible
for madness.

I can't wait to see what is going to happen next.
If they have the monster, let's see what his defense will be?
Insanity? Bad childhood? On drugs?
Stay tuned folks.

Potty training.  It's always the trauma of potty training.

If you're talking about our military boys you are WAY out of line.
They are NOT  trained to snatch people off the street,,where the heck does that come from?

I have no idea what she looks like, or what her background is. I don't think it matters. The horror is, that a young life is cut short in a terrifying and cruel way, and a family is left grieving. I suppose I am guilty of a certain amount of ageism, but it always seems more unfair when a very young person dies, because they have been cheated out of more years. If you wish to select a list of other victims, of varied race, sex, and physical attractiveness, and post it here, I promise to be equally outraged and saddened, and pray as much for their families, also.

Shantra -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/14/2007 7:48:22 AM)

I echo the horror and disgust of everyone who has expressed it here.  Just one thing for you to pass on to your own and relatives and friends in case you do not know.

Master taught me something very important.  Never, NEVER allow yourself to be taken from point A to point B.  Point A is normally a public place that someone takes you from and Point B that remote place.  At point A that person does not want extra attention, basically you have to be brave and think, yes, they could kill me here, but if they get me to point B I am most likely going to die in a far worse way.  So.. fight, scream, yell, make as much noise and fight as hard as you can.  If this fails and they get you in the car, try to remove the keys and jab them in the face with them, grab the wheel and try to crash the car, do anything you can to get attention on the vehicle.  One piece of advice he gave about if you get put in the trunk of the car and we saw one woman actually do this on America's Most Wanted.. pull out the wires to the lights, try to get your hands to the outside or some kind of signal, anything that might catch the attention of law enforcement or another vehicle.

Bottom line.  Never be taken from point A to point B.
