MzMia -> Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 7:09:53 PM)

I have been following the story about Kelsey Smith since Sunday night.
For some reason, it just touched my heart.
She goes to the store, to buy a graduation present, in broad daylight.  She calls her mom to say she
is on the way home.  She has people there waiting for her, so she can go to a graduation party.
She JUST graduated from High School, just 18 years old.
Some horrible monster, follows her in the store...then forces his way in her car,
in the parking lot?
No one seems to see it and it is on video tape.

Her body was found tonight tonight in a heavily wooded area about 18 miles from
the Target parking lot.
I just saw her parents crying on t.v.
This makes me sad, what kind of damn world is this?
I hope they find the filth that kidnapped that poor child.

R.I.P. baby, sleep with the angels....  MyFox Kansas City | Latest On Kelsey Smith's Body Found

popeye, I don't know what to do with many of the monsters
walking around these days.
But that monster, appears to be caught on tape.
When, they find him..........

AwakenedStar -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 8:53:29 PM)

i don't know why i'm always surprised when stuff like this happens. this world is going mad...

MzMia -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 8:57:13 PM)

Can you imagine, waiting for your daughter to come home after
she went to Target?
She called her mother as she left the store, to tell her she was on her

way home.
This is just horrible.

[:)]Yea, I'd be one of those usually.  I don't believe in the death penalty or torture but when I read of the horrible things people do to children, I'm tempted to change my mind temporarily.  The most recent case was that white trash couple in Toledo, OH who kept the kids in a cage, refused them food, and used a shock collar on the little boy.  Mommy was out stripping for drug money while Daddy stayed home in the trash-filled trailer starving and abusing the kids.  If they aren't good candidates for some "enhanced interrogation techniques," I'm not sure who is[;)].  I know we, as a society, shouldn't stoop to the level of the degenerates we seek to punish but sometimes it would just feel so right........luci

This is beyond sad and as a parent I can't imagine the horror.

People with more than one profile often trip up eventually, and do this.

muttering: funny how many act when rejected online.
But I digress here.......
LOL, maybe so, but I did it on purpose, because no one
was posting on it.
Good self-esteem is a great characteristic. [:D]

Just wondering.. does anyone have some real statistics on whether the death penalty is a real deterrent?
I know that in crimes of compulsion ,it (death penalty) has little,if any effect.
It seems the better way would be to stop these people some way before they did the crime.
Does anyone here think that it could be possible to rout out a gene or something for murderous impulses?
I dont mean to high jack this thread ,but I am really interested in this..and I think this discussion sort of fits with the torture remarks and all.
I could be wrong..

MzMia -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 10:03:06 PM)

You are not hijacking the thread, I was hoping the thread would take this turn,
I do not know the statistics, but I would also like to know that.
Also, do many of us care, if it is a deterrent or not?
You are on the money.

popeye1250 -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 10:04:18 PM)

I don't believe in torture for interogation purposes as that doesn't work but rather for sheer punishment for animals like the one who killed this girl or for al qeada.

well he is not that far from leavenworth that is if he is ever taken there

cyberdude611 -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 10:29:58 PM)

Keep in mind folks...this happened in broad daylight, in the middle of a busy retail store, in front of security cameras. Whoever did this had no fear of being caught...It was the last thing on their mind. Which leads me to believe that the attacker knows the victim. It makes no sense for this to be just some random killing. A kidnapper, rapist, or killer would not have made the risks this guy made.

Will the death penalty prevent this kind of thing...studies, statistics, and criminlology say no. Depending on what this crime is...crimes of passion won't be prevented by anything most of the time. A random killing? We really just dont know all the facts. However the stats say overall that the death penalty does not deter crime.

In cases dealing with serial killers, most of the time they know they will be caught and they want to be caught. Many times they will even play "cat and mouse" with the police. The death penalty wont deter them. In fact Richard Ramirez (aka: "The Night Stalker") after being sentenced to death laughed and told the judge, "Death comes with the territory. I'll see you in Disneyland." These people are just simply insane, death won't deter them.

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: Not safe to go to the store? Poor Kelsey Smith (6/6/2007 10:33:00 PM)

There was a discussion recently on the Diane Rheem show on NPR about the effectiveness of the death penalty as a deterrent. By the end of the show it seemed to be a draw. Each side was able to produce numbers to prove their point. My own feeling is that it has little value so long as the trial and appeal process can take 20 or more years to come to a conviction.

As for genetic markers that might predict a tendancy to murder I hope we never begin to use any such determination. Consider the descendants of John Wilkes Booth. By all accounts none has been involved in any violent crime for over 100 years, yet they would likely share genetics with their ancestor and therebye might be incarcerated or segregated from society based on such a test because of the remote possibility that they might commit a violent crime as their progenitor had. I think violent crime is a choice, not an hereditary inevitability.

Dearest MzMia,

i think anyone with a child dies a little inside when witnessing such tradgedy.
i was watching the report with my son and was moved as he spoke first
of how sad it made him and how angry he was for such a senseless waste
of life. As his father, i immediately went on the, be careful, always be aware,
avoid situations which bother you offense. Then i realized the fact that this
beautiful young Lady had gone to a busy store, returned to Her car in a busy
parking lot, all in broad daylight. No place is safe, no one is safe anymore,
from the madness which lurks to destroy. If in fact the young man caught on
video is responsible for this crime, what could have possibly existed in his life
that in a few short years he became capable of taking a life so easily? i don't
know if a death penalty would have deterred such from happening as some
simply have no respect for life, as is proven everyday. Our prisons are full,
our young are killing each other at an alarming rate, there is an underlying
anger which invades and permeates our lives on a daily basis. i spent the
rest of the evening glancing over at my son, only seventeen, the thought of
him ever being taken from me and the heartbreaking sadness which would
destroy my days hangs with me this very minute. i will pray for the family
of young Kelsey, that they will find the strength to make it through what
will change their lives forever. Death is coming at us in so many ways these
days, it can almost numb us to the fact. i will in fact pray for all who are
realizing the loss of a loved one, and ask that others join me in doing such.
The issues which most of us may consider as problems, suddenly pale when
we walk in the shoes of those whose simple afternoon became a nightmare.
Thank You for posting this here, so much more important tonight, than any
other topic i can think of. Be well, hug your children, love them with all your
might, voices and smiling faces may suddenly fade away.

Thank you all for sharing and caring.
I don't ever want to get to the point that crimes, especially crimes
this horrific are "no big deal".
It also makes you wonder about people that don't get upset!

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Police have arrested a suspect!

Authorities arrested a suspect Wednesday night for the kidnap and murder of 18-year-old Kelsey Smith who disappeared from a Target parking lot in Overland Park, Kan., on Saturday.
Police believe 26-year-old Edwin Hall was the man who appeared on a security camera video following Smith out of the store and forced her into her car.
Overland Park Police Chief John Douglass said police had located a truck matching the description of one seen entering the store's parking lot moments before Smith was abducted in Hall's possession. Hall was arrested after being interviewed by police, Douglass said.

The district attorney is expected to file first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping charges against Hall on Thursday morning. The state plans to ask Hall be held on $5 million bond.
Douglass police had received more than 500 leads on the case from community members, one of which led to Hall.
A family spokesman read a statement from Smith family thanking investigators and community members for helping search for their daughter.

I am so glad I read this, before I went to bed.
I can't wait to see what is going to happen next.
If they have the monster, let's see what his defense will be?
Insanity? Bad childhood? On drugs?
Stay tuned folks.
