Mexicans Boo Miss USA, Showing Discord

May 29 03:03 PM US/Eastern
By JULIE WATSON
Associated Press Writer

MEXICO CITY (AP) - Many here south of the border reveled in her disastrous evening: First Miss USA Rachel Smith slipped and fell on her bottom during the Miss Universe evening gown competition. Then she was booed by hundreds in the Mexican audience.
The treatment of the Tennessee beauty queen was nothing personal. It had more to do with Mexico's sometimes tense relationship with its powerful northern neighbor.

U.S. athletes have sparked a similar response. In 2005, when the U.S. played Mexico during a World Cup soccer qualifier, the crowd booed the U.S. national anthem and a smattering of fans chanted "Osama! Osama!" during the game.

Smith was booed repeatedly during her stay in Mexico, including last week, when she carried a guitar and wore an Elvis-style suit during a parade of national costumes held in downtown Mexico City.

She kept her poise during an interview Monday night with pageant judges, despite the boos and chants of "Mexico! Mexico!" that drowned out her answer.

"I am very passionate about education and being in South Africa sparked my interest in that," said Smith, a journalism graduate who volunteered for a month at talk show host Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Then she paused, smiled and spoke in Spanish. "Buenas noches Mexico. Muchas gracias!" which earned her some applause and some chuckles.

Miss Japan Riyo Mori, who went on to win the crown, opened her interview with "Hola Mexico!" to cheers and claps. Her personal trainer, Ines Ligron, said she had warned Mori about the importance of speaking in Spanish to win over the crowd.

Even an opening "hola" might not have helped Smith, who faced long odds for simply being a gringa.

U.S.-Mexico relations worsened in the past year after the U.S. National Guard was sent to the U.S.-Mexico border to assist the U.S. Border Patrol and help build hundreds of miles of wall to keep out illegal migrants.

Mexicans are also upset over a U.S. Senate proposal for a sweeping immigration reform bill that would limit the consideration of family ties, capping visas for foreign parents of U.S. citizens at 40,000 a year. The plan would change a system that favored family ties for four decades.

Many Mexicans also feel that the United States exerts its influence to tip the balance in its favor, whether in global politics or sports events.

On Tuesday, Mexican media lamented the fact that their contestant, Rosa Maria Ojeda, did not make it to the top five in the pageant while Smith did, despite falling down on the runway. Smith's fifth place finish only added to the theory that the United States always is favored.

The Mexican newspaper El Universal said Ojeda's fans were not as upset about her top-10 finish as they were that "the judges did not penalize that fact that Miss USA totally fell on her seat after she stepped on her dress."

The newspaper said that when the show went to a commercial break, an NBC representative warned the audience of 9,000 to behave because "this gives the world a bad image of Mexico."

Donald Trump, who co-owns the pageant, brushed off the ruckus as Mexicans' frustration with Washington politics.

Smith did not comment publicly after the contest. On Tuesday, she flew back to the United States.

Well, that's seriously rude.

cyberdude611 -> RE: Mexicans boo Miss USA (5/29/2007 10:02:11 PM)

This is probably one reason why Mexico City is never on anyone's list to host global events. The place is a dump. Crime is astronomical. Police are corrupt. And the people are rude.
Of course the people there claim it is America's fault Mexico doesn't get a chance to get on the world stage.

Y'know I am sick of this. Mexicans do not seem to recongnize the sovereignty of the US, and they think they deserve some land from us. Well, those with that attitude, when my People take over we'll give them their land, six feet deep.

You fucking come to the US, you get loyal to the US, no ifs ands or buts. If you are not willing to do that stay home.

Similarly, if we don't like their attitude down in Mexico, that is their country. Stay home. Period.

It really is that simple.

You know they teach in schools down in Mexico that the United States stole the southwest from them.
66% of Mexicans today think this is true.

I just find it funny because if you read accurate history, today's Mexicans are actually from Spain in the 1500s. They slaughtered the Aztecs and stole the land and wealth from them. So going from their philosophy, its not their land either.

It used to be a very friendly place{Back in the 80's early 90's}.....I've been down into the non-tourist interior numerous numerous times. But it's definitely changed.....and can very dangerous.

One of the last times I was in Mexico City.....Don King had the car he was riding in purposely boxed-in by a couple of taxi's....the Mexicans emptied out of the cars with machetes and guns and told Don King that if he didn't take off his 100k Rolex and give it to them, they'd cut his arm off and take it regardless. Let me tell ya something.....if you can get away with doing that to Don King, that's bad news for everyone  ; }

General reply about the history of Mexico -

The Spanish inter-mingled with the local Indigenous women and produced the
mestizo class, the persons of mixed ancestry that make up the bulk of the population
in Mexico.  The root word of "mezclar" means "to mix" and led to the name of the
country.

For a bit of background on the War between Mexico and the US see -

"Mexican-American War - Wikipedia"

" The Mexican–American War, also known in the United States as the Mexican War, and in Mexico as la invasión estadounidense (the United States Invasion), la intervención norteamericana (the North American Intervention), or la guerra del 47 (the War of '47) was a military conflict fought between the United States and Mexico from 1846 to 1848, in the wake of the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas. Mexico had not recognized the secession of Texas in 1836 and announced its intention to take back what it considered a rebel province.

In the United States, the war was a partisan issue, supported by most Democrats and opposed by most Whigs, with popular belief in the Manifest Destiny of the United States ultimately translating into public support for the war. In Mexico, the war was considered a matter of national pride.

The most important consequence of the war was the Mexican Cession, in which the Mexican territories of Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México, were ceded to the United States under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In Mexico, the enormous loss (52%) of territory which resulted from the war encouraged the central government to enact policies to colonize its northern territories as a hedge against further losses. Yeah.  So, if they are going to tell the US how to run our borders, who we can and cannot allow in, and what to do with people who come here illegally, we can tell them the same things, right?  After all, I don't think it's fair that Mexico's response to illegal immigration is to imprison the people for a couple years before deportation back to their country of origin.  And then, if the illegal immigrants get caught a second time, they are imprisoned for life.

Oh, wait, but it's not "illegal immigrants" is it?  It's "undocumented immigrants"...

Yeah.  Mexico wants to dictate our policies, then they should allow us the same consideration they are demanding from us.

A few years back, US golf fans had a right go at the European team.

A few months back, one of the US boxers fought Joe Calzaghe in Wales, and the US national anthem was booed from start to finish.

Sections of a crowd are always unruly.

Maybe the Mexicans were booing the concept of a Miss World, or maybe just laughing their cocks off because one of them had fallen on her arse - I know I would have.

Maybe they share world public sentiment in being opposed to US foreign policy. They're joined by just about every country on the planet, in this regard. One of the journalists for The New York Times recently: "There are now two world superpowers: one is the US, the other is world public opinion".

NavyDDG54 -> RE: Mexicans boo Miss USA (5/30/2007 5:42:28 AM)

In the Navy at morning colors when a foreign ship is moored at a US base we play their anthem right after the Star Spangled Banner, and we remain saluting until it's completion. Just like we salute all foreign officers and foreign nationals flags that are parading by uncased.

To show disrespect for a country's anthem is an insult to that country. and to do it to a country who funnels countless dollars of aid to keep your government functioning and is doing most of the work in your anti-drugs campaigns(ie the US Coast Guard) is even worse.

NorthernGent -> RE: Mexicans boo Miss USA (5/30/2007 5:56:56 AM)

Yes, but you're simply picking out a section of US society and making a generalisation.

I remember the Europeans being roundly booed and genuinely derided for being European at one of the golf tournaments.

As said, the US national anthem was booed in Wales a few months back. I remember the US antional anthem being booed in London at a boxing match between Nigel Benn and Gerald McClellan.

There are unruly elements in any large crowd.

And, to be frank, it's no good observing a national anthem one day and the next day sending an air force to bomb villages and their inhabitants. You can blather on about respect 'til the cows come home, but there's no greater disrespect than invading a sovereign nation and killing the people living there.

This sounds like the usual argument - you and the people who think like you want the rest of the world to play by your rules i.e. sending an army to kill and displace people is fine, as is overthrowing sovereign governments and replacing them with your preferred version, but booing your representatives is disgraceful. Your priorities are completely out of order.

NavyDDG54 -> RE: Mexicans boo Miss USA (5/30/2007 6:08:19 AM)

your problem is you see everything as black and white. In today's world almost nothing is. One thing that is however, is respect. Unless we are in an actual state of war with a country, I will always show respect to that country.  If that country has done something to warrant military action then they will face that.  The people have always paid the price for the government's actions, ever since the first government. But reagardless of what the actions are by the government. the PEOPLE still have a responsibility to act civilized and to show due respect. I wouldnt piss on your flag, and I expect you not to piss on mine. If we go to war I will fight you. But until then I will show your flag and your anthem the respect they are due. because just like my Flag and my Anthem the blood of every soldier who died defending them is in your flag and your anthem as well.

Yes, I rather like this piece from Wikipedia regarding an earlier time in Mexico.

quote:

:  From:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Aztecs

Fall of the Aztec Empire

For more on the conquest of Mexico by Spain, see also Spanish Conquest of Mexico, Siege of Tenochtitlan, and Hernán Cortés.
The Aztecs were conquered by Spain in 1521 after a long siege of the capital, Tenochtitlan, where much of the population died from hunger and smallpox. Cortés, with up to 500 Spaniards, did not fight alone but with as many as 150,000 or 200,000 allies from Tlaxcala, and eventually other Aztec tributary states. Cuauhtémoc, the last Hueyi Tlatoani surrendered to Cortés on August 13, 1521.
...
The fate of the Aztec empire under Spanish rule
Cortés' stated intention was to maintain the structure of the Aztec empire. Initially, it seemed that the Aztec empire could survive under Spanish rule. The upper classes of the Aztec empire were initially considered as noblemen (to this day, the title of Duke of Moctezuma is held by a Spanish noble family). The upper classes learned Spanish, and several learned to write in Roman characters. Some of their surviving writings are crucial to our knowledge of the Aztecs. In addition, the first missionaries tried to learn Nahuatl and some, like Bernardino de Sahagún, set out to learn as much as they could of the Aztec culture.

All that changed rapidly. Eventually, the indigenous peoples were not only forbidden to learn of their cultures, but were also forbidden to learn to read and write in Spanish, and, under the law, they were reduced to the status of minors.

I'm not at all sure it makes sense to say today's Mexicans are descendants of Spaniards who conquered the indigenous people (Aztecs, et al) or...that they are descendants of the Aztecs who lost their land to the Spaniards.

What I do find interesting is that whoever was left were forbidden to learn to read and write the now 'common' language.  We could save a ton of money, were we to follow THAT example!!!

Okay, I know that's a childish response, but I feel we should offer a crash course in English to those who are interested in becoming American; and not waste money with bilingual schools, signs, labels...etc.   Why is it a people leaves their own land for another and then refuses to assimilate?

Give me a break, NG. I remember when Bill Clinton used to visit Europe...you guys still bood him. I don't think Iraq is the issue.

And TV networks in Mexico did not claim the booing was for US policy...they claimed it was because they thought the US was favored in international events like pagents and sports. Don't tell me it doesn't piss off the French that Lance Armstrong (a guy from the same state as George W. Bush) won their little bike race 6 years in a row. But not even did they boo when Armstrong won, and the US anthem is played.

If Ronald Reagan was alive and goes over to Europe today, he'd be booed too. Everything in Europe right now is socialism and globalism. That is something Americans do not particularly agree with. Europe has changed very much since the cold war days....some argue for the worse. America hasn't changed much at all.

Where?

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but "you guys"? Europe is a big place - different countries with a spectrum of attitudes.

Let's say it was England, it wouldn't be "you guys" because the day I start booing someone, or care about who's doing the booing or who's being booed, is the day I pack it all in.

I mean, there's widespread organised violence in certain sections of the world accompanied by the displacement of civilians, starvation, and a lack of basic facilities such as sanitation, but let's not sit here and let these issues dominate the real, serious issues such as the disgraceful outbursts of booing.

Maybe they were right, so?

I don't know the French very well, but I'd estimate they're not as concerned with the US as you would like to believe. I'll also take a wild stab in the dark that many of "The French" couldn't give a flying one about Lance Armstrong, or even know who he is.

I can't speak for the whole of Europe, but, in England, I can remember him being an object of ridicule - never the subject of booing.

You would know, seeing as you spend so much time here. Hats off to you for understanding a vast contintent such as Europe from your home in the US.

There isn't a single Socialist nation in Europe. Maybe Belarus at a push.

Your other elementary misunderstanding is that you fail to understand that Socialists (the ones in England, anyway) hate globalisation because they believe it is being driven by US corporate aims.

Sadly, it's much worse than that.  Most Americans do not even know our own history.  We know a few things--usually anything holiday related, like George Washington crossing the Delaware and Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth.  But most Americans consider history to be a complete and utter waste of time.

I won't bother to correct the silly historical mistakes in this thread--I'm stepping out to the gym instead.  I merely find it amusing that so many patriotic, "One Hundred Per Cent" Americans have no clue about our own history.

I've never been out of the US either, but I do pay attention and I believe that most of the world is rowdier than the US.  In most of the world, cheering and booing at most public events is normal.  International contests are taken much more seriously than in the US--note that the irony of the so-called "World Series."  Nobody really cares here if the US soccer team or the US basketball team wins or loses, we care about our regional teams.  Americans are known for their rigid, puritanical standards--most of the world regards us as backwards when it comes to our sexual and social hang-ups.

PS--You'll need to look up "One Hundred Per Cent American" to know what I meant by that...I ain't dumbing it down for no mass audience! [;)]
