i was wondering, can you study sex in college? okay, maybe i should be less vague. are there classes you can take to study the history, physc, social facters and the like... i was homeschooled and got a ged as a kid, but have no formal education, though i got some nice marks on the asvab, but couldn't join the military for medical reasons... so any info or exp on the matter would be appriciated. note, persons from the south should not be taught phonix [:)] thanks - phoenix

Well i dont know what a ged is and i dont know what asvab is, but my best suggestion would be to google uni's or what ever school is the next level you should be going on to and seeing what subjects in what ever country you are from.

Studying sex?

Well, the question becomes whether you want to study the biological / physiological processes, which would involve going to college for that, possibley going on to medical school.

I suspect human sexuality comes under the general heading of sociology, anthropology, or possibly psychology.

I did a search on university programs on human sexuality and got 882,000 hits.

Your future is out there...

In the United States, the GED is also known as the high school equivalency exam.  A person takes it rather than going to high school.

If I remember right, the ASVAB is the test one takes to show the military their intelligence and education levels.  Gives them an idea what sorts of position the person could fill.

I've never noticed Formal Classes, but I did find a good book once that covers the History.
It's titled "Sex In History" (duh) ~ written by, Reay Tannahill.

OrangeJulius -> RE: Major Sex? (5/27/2007 6:42:07 AM)

I remember when I was a kid, my mom (a psychology major) had to study plenty of textbooks with sexuality chapters, and at least one full textbook on the subject. So I'm sure there are classes on it, but they are probably just prep courses in other programs, and not a full program.

For example, at VCU, there is a "Human Behavior" program that includes a women's studies program and a human sexuality program. Not a full program, but it is a start. My best advice would be to go into a psychology major, but take as many "sex" classes as I could. Of course, you could always call an admissions office and ask them, I'm sure that they would know more than any of us would. Another good person to ask would be those "sexologists" that are always on television. Figure out how they got where they are, and try it.

LightHeartedMaam -> RE: Major Sex? (5/27/2007 7:01:45 AM)

If you have cable, there is a series called "The History of Sex" on now that is good.

velvetears -> RE: Major Sex? (5/27/2007 7:24:33 AM)

i love that show - there's another on cable with this older woman - a grandma type and she takes sex questions from callers - it's hilarious - Sue Johanson i think is her name can't remember - i can remember once my um came down to get something to drink and peeked in after hearing some of it and asked me - mom what are you watching lol.  But back to the OP - there are many ways of going about studying Human Sexuality in school - many psychology classes - some even devoted specifically to the topic. Anthropology classes will give you classes on the different cultural practices around sexual rituals and customs.  Sociology courses cover sexuality as well - Human Anatomy will cover the physics of sex - how everything works, where it is, what it's called lol etc.  So many possibilities - you can even specialize in it - you can get a degree in becoming a sex therapist.

Disclaimer:  Only because this slave went through this with a replicant....and not sure how it works in each and every state, but...

in the Great State of California, the GED is the option for those who are considered adults(18) and therefore not compelled by law to enroll and attend high school, to prove they are proficient at what is considered a high school education, not as an alternative for persons to attend high school, for whatever reason.

The High School Proficiency exam is the option for those who are at least 16 and have satisfactorily completed their second(sophomore) year, who don't want to be considered truant by not attending high school for whatever reason they choose.

it is not the same as a high school diploma, however, on the actual certificate itself are instructions that the Proficiency Certificate be treated as if it was a diploma by employers or institutions of higher-than-compulsory education.  One is thereby relieved of the obligation to attend high school, if under the age of 18.

As of 2005, the military will not treat it as if it was a diploma, but the Community College system and employers are required to.

To the OP:

It doesn't have to be an accredited institution to learn about sex...this slave has attended classes for decades...and is still learning![;)]

Viridana -> RE: Major Sex? (5/27/2007 10:45:02 AM)

I don't know how it's done in the US but here 2nd year medical student go to every high school with sex education.
All from birth control, sexually transmitted diseases, rape, abortions, porn, bdsm, homosexuality, myths about sex as well as teaching how the body functions as a sexual being. There has been nothing but positive feedback for this.
I'm sure there are good courses for this.
You can also go to your doctor and get him/her to answer your questions.

Thank you for the clarification.

I started my sex education in high school.

Long story, but I was married for most of my college years.

phoenixinchains -> RE: Major Sex? (5/29/2007 3:18:07 AM)

thanks for all the replies, i was watching that piticular show (History of Sex)and that's what got me thinking on the matter. first hand i've been a student for some time. a lot of people my age are going to college, though i doubt it would ever fit into the lifestyle my Mate and i will have til His retirement. but still, i wonder if i did go, what possibly could hold my attention...and sence no one seemed certain about a fixed (uh,,, word for set classes that can get you a big fancy degree) it seems that someone should take all the classes possible and become a doctor/professor of sex and then set up a college (university?) of sex. why not? kids go to college to get laid, and no one would ever forget to do their homework...
oh yeah, i got my GED in arkansas. well, things are kinda wierd with education there, and i needn't say much more than that on the subject[;)] i applied to the army in '04, took my asvab, and then the navy and air force wanted to give me waivers to recruit me, alas, no one wanted me after they found out what i was allergic to.... oh the rejection!
    thanks again- phoenix[:)]

Teaching about sex is one thing.

But I'm damned sure I wouldnt want any practical demonstrations if the lecturers were anything like the ones I had in college.

What?

phoenixinchains -> RE: Major Sex? (5/29/2007 4:15:58 AM)

shouldn't be taught phonix, which is a teaching method where people "sound out" how to read and spell. this doesn't work as well with people whose dialect is very tainted from the root langauge, well truely, it doesn't work well in the English language, but it's used none the less. i thought "husband" was spelled "h-u-s-b-i-n" for the longest time[:)] phoenix
