What the hell was the Board of Elections doing? Jerking Off?

You know, they're supposed to check those registrations when submitted.

The funniest part was when I looked at their staff photo: all white. Then I looked at their staff directory, and zoinks! They have not one, but two token Mexicans on staff! Wow! For a right wing wacko group, they're positively liberal!

Can we FINALLY say that we have an illegal immigrant problem? or that thigns have gone to hell in a handbasket, maybe THAT is why it keeps getting hotter. Its not global warming, its hell.

I would find it hard to believe that this is confined to one small town and isn't going to end up being more widespread.

No, we can't....not on the basis of this article at any rate. First of all, this is an interest group. What would you say if a fictional group named "Americans for letting illegals vote" issued a press release saying there's no immigrant problem? Wouldn't it seem prudent to get the facts from someone less interested in slanting the issue?

Second, note the quote:

"Surely embarrassed by the seriousness of the situation, Bexar County officials would not reveal figures but a San Antonio news station reports that 303 illegal aliens successfully registered to vote in the last few years and dozens actually cast ballots in various elections."

303 illegals supposedly registered in the last few years, and dozens supposedly voted over the same period. How many actually voted? Over how long? "Dozens" and "in the last few years" sounds bad, but what are the real numbers? If "dozens" equals 24 voters over a 10 year period in a county with a population of 1,500,000 residents, then it's statistically meaningless.

Take nothing on faith--question everything.

Edit: On a second read, I noticed something even I missed: Bexar County officials would not reveal figures. Huh? So how did they figure out that any illegals voted? Did they ask the old lady at the polling station "Did you spot anyone with a skin darker than X on election day?"

There's not a thing wrong with having a position on an issue such as this. I'm not advocating illegal voting. Just don't be a sucker for every interest group with a sharp pen!

I had no idea this was happening. I thought every state in the US had to show valid ID to vote.

I would add that unregistered voters vote all the time: it's called a provisional ballot.

Where I am, we HAVE to show a government issue ID to vote [military id, drivers license or state id ... passports, social security cards, etc are NOT permitted]. They check your ID twice, once when you give your name ans address, then again after you sign and they give your ballot.

Sad thing is, with as many people who ARE registered to vote most don't [I have in EVEYR election since I turned 18, tyvm], more people voted for American Idol last week than voted in the Presidential election, THAT is sad. Maybe they should do the election that way, a call/text in, lol.

I'm in california too...I've never shown my ID--I vote absentee.

I actually registered to vote as soon as I turned 18 as well. What was my reward? A jury duty notice 2 months later! Fortunately, I've been in college ever since, and although I've been summoned about 10 times, I've never had to serve!

I was on a double homiside last year [blogs posted on it anyone who is curious on lj]. Before that I was called 4 consecutive years for jd, you know what though, its an honour to have been on a jury, you look at things a LOT differently. Its an eye opening experince, I would not mind sitting on another jury, I don't think I could handle another high profile case though.

Voting absentee is :P The polls are open for 12 hours, it takes 5 min; just skip your run to Starbucks or leave a few minutes earlier.

I have been looking for it on the major news channels and can't find it. I also can't find any real news station, or paper in Texas that says anything about it, other than blogs and some very dubious websites. If it is breaking news I haven't seen it yet. But who knows. I am going to ask my gf's husband about it, since he is the editor for one of our big, local news stations. I live in Texas too. In Houston they are very strict at the polling stations. Not only do you have to bring current and valid documentation, but they check it while you are standing in line, and they also check it at the table before you vote. They also check you against a list of current registered voters.

Here is a link to an FAQ stating what one needs to do to vote in Texas. I don't find what they do here makes it any easier than other states I have lived in. In fact it is even more difficult here to register, as a number of us that moved to different counties, in the same freaking city, found out last year. I also have never noticed people wearing fake mustaches when voting, and I people watch as the lines are so horribly long, and I am bored.

Drat I can't seem to post that link. But it is a link to the State of Texas and Voter Registration that can be easily googled. Couldn't help but post when I read this thread...lol.

One small problem with that, it's a deportable Federal Felony for an illegal to even attempt to vote!
I think they go to jail for a few years before being deported too.

I never understood the liberal arguement that it is bad to ask for ID before being allowed to vote.

I can't write a check anywhere without ID or use a credit card. I can't buy cigarettes or alcohol without ID. I can't drive without ID. Yet they want to let people vote without ID? THAT'S INSANE!

Last time someone asked me for ID at the polls, I showed them BOTH my ACLU and NRA membership cards, neither has a photo.

Yeah, read that...but that still doesn't mean they told the truth on their jury duty replies. We're being asked to believe that the individuals in question lied on their voter registration but told the truth on their jury duty reply. What if they told the truth on their voter reg but lied on their jury duty reply to get out of serving? What if they lied on both? Are we to believe a pang of conscience induced them to lie on one and not the other?
