Ok, this is kind of gross and really not relevant to us as Americans, ( I don't think).   But I am watching Dr. Oz on Oprah, and they were talking about the "penis fish".   yuk.
 
Apparently there is such a thing and it is found in the Amazon River.  It is a member of the catfish family, and likes urine.   If you take a bath in the river, it can enter into the penis or vagina and it attaches itself to the urethra with barbs and feasts on your blood.   
 
The only way to get it out is with surgery.    
 
Gosh, I learn something new everyday.   I know this is useless information, but damn interesting (at least to me), so I thought I would put it out there.

I remember watching something on the discovery channel about a man who went on holiday and came home with a lump on his head and it grew and grew till eventually they found a maggot type thing growng in it !!!!!!! I felt ill for days thinking about it [&:][&:][&:]

I've heard of them.  They're even worse than those river worms that enter a person's feet...and ya don't know they're there till ya see 'em swim across yer eyes!  Yes...they're found by staring into a mirror!  And...they're LONG!
 
They're even worse than the droves of people who sit in the hot springs where the damn hungry little fish are kept.  Apparently these fish will eat the dry, flakey skin of anybody body part...  They flock to the pools to visit these fish. 
 
They remind me of maggots on wounds!  Dang!!!  Talk about the heartbreak of psoriasis.

I saw something on this as well a few months back. I think I did the groudy dance for a minute. The one that got me was the video of the lady with the maggot in her head.

I can't remember now if it was House or Grey's Anatomy (I think it was Grey's), but one of them had a recent episode with a case that involved a penis fish.  It was not pleasant.

I believe it was House....yep that hurt me and I don't even have a penis...lol...ick

oh crap...I'm not as sure of myself...I thought it may be House cause I never miss those and just got into Grey's Anatomy and have seen very few...but I think it was Greys...lol

still makes me cringe no matter who it is...lol

I read a study which was trying to allow (in the US) the use of maggots to clean septic wounds.

I know it is gross, but a maggot will not eat living tissue.  They will only eat dead tissue.  Dead tissue tends to cause the tissue next to it to necrotize unless removed.  The only reason a wound heals is because the body successfully walls off the healthy tissue from the dead tissue, but is not always successful.  A maggot will clean down to the living and healthy tissue, and leave it to heal.

The only way to surgically cure a necrotic wound is to cut enough outside the tissue to ensure only healthy tissue is removed, load the person up with antibiotics, stitch it back together, and hope for the best.

Maggots are more effective at cleaning wounds than modern medical science.

Grey's Anatomy featured the 'penis fish' or "Vandellia cirrhosa" and "candiru"... (aka the Toothpick Fish).

It's found in the Amazon River and can grow up to six inches in length. It's eel shaped and translucent, making it almost impossible to see in the water.
