I understand maggots being good for medical reasons, but to come home from vacation to find one has decided to take up residency in your head. Now that is just gross.

No maggot play for me please!

This is why you piss while on the shore.

CrimsonMoan:
Well there are those pesky flukes that will swim up the stream of urine and enter the urethra and lay their  eggs.

True. I will admit i had forgotten that. This is why i have always stuck to pissing behind the bushes.

CrimsonMoan:
You mean behind the bushes that the snakes are under?[:D]

I saw that on Grey's, was pretty freaked out about it and yet tried not to laugh too loudly as I was at work and didn't want to explain to my clients what was so funny.  I work in a group home I get paid to watch tv with them, no slacking here.

I read a study which was trying to allow (in the US) the use of maggots to clean septic wounds.

I know it is gross, but a maggot will not eat living tissue.  They will only eat dead tissue.  Dead tissue tends to cause the tissue next to it to necrotize unless removed.  The only reason a wound heals is because the body successfully walls off the healthy tissue from the dead tissue, but is not always successful.  A maggot will clean down to the living and healthy tissue, and leave it to heal.

The only way to surgically cure a necrotic wound is to cut enough outside the tissue to ensure only healthy tissue is removed, load the person up with antibiotics, stitch it back together, and hope for the best.

Maggots are more effective at cleaning wounds than modern medical science

Yes, wounds and bones!  Anybody watch Bones?  They regularly use maggots and sometimes a sort of beetle to clean skeletal remains.

I wasn't kidding about cleaning wounds either, Synergy...they've been using maggots in hospitals for some time!  Of course...they are sterile maggots; raised just for medical purposes.  I remember watching some documentary where a woman had some sort of  problem...she had two bandages under which were placed a handfull of maggots.  I don't know why, but the ones cleaning out the tissue of her heel really grossed me out.  Of course, the camera got in real close and showed the little munchers working away.

but you would let a human eat your ass?  C'mon why so squicky? They use leeches too, these were not the cause of sepsis. I see no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.  I don't understand how people will gladly llook at Silence of the Lambs but eschew the documentaries by electorn microscope about the human skin, and other structures.  Ya wipe your ass when you shit, don't ya?  What's a little cleanup.
