My dad was a welder, mechanic & bodyman. There are no easy paths with metal work, no matter how much we wish there were. A lapse in attention working with metal and welding gear can be anything from painful to fatal. It is well worth taking extra classes and spending the time learning how to do things right -- that way you can learn the little things like lacing your workboots tightly and not tucking your jeans into them. A friend of mine used to wear his jeans tucked into unlaced boots until a glob of molten steel ran down the crease of the jeans and burned a path through his foot to the sole of the boot. Collars are worn on the neck, near arteries that are far closer to the surface than most people assume. I wouldn't want to use a collar made by someone who had taken shortcuts with it. Anything made of metal and meant for anything other than purely ornamental use requires years of traning.
