Anyone else been tracking the attempt by the Motion Picture Association of America to censor the internet?  Someone discovered the hexidecimal key needed to decode HD DVDs a few months back and it was posted on Digg on May 1.  The MPAA sent a cease and desist letter, and Digg complied, leading to an outright revolt by Digg users.  Digg users mobbed the website in a massive act of civil disobedience, forcing Digg to allow the number to be posted.

For those who don't know, what's at stake here is just a number.  It's like a password, there's nothing intrinisically special or original about it.  They're attempting to lay exclusive rights to a number!  I googled the number in question last week, and found 400,000 sites posting it.  By Saturday night, the number of sites had grown to 1.5 million.  Tonight the number stands at 1.9 million.

The funniest part about all of this is that few people knew or cared about the number until the MPAA made a big stink out of it.  The number has become a cause celebre, and now what had been an obscure number that nobody could use to hack an HD-DVD will almost certainly be seen as a challenge by millions of hackers around the globe.  Some enterprising folks are even selling T-shirts with the number emblazoned across the front, and there's a video on youtube of an artist "singing" the number.  Apparently, the content providers learned absolutely nothing from their attempt to squash file sharing!

You have awoken a sleeping giant.

Let me start by saying I wouldn't steal a movie if someopne threw it in my car window. I would throw it out. What I 'steal' in the way of music I can prove I have the right to most of it, by not throwing out those old tapes and albums, in fact I intend to prove that they owe me. It is god to have an attic.

Here is the problem. This is entertainment, and it is totally worthless. I don't care that society makes these people rich so they are in the news and we can all cry when they drown on their own vomit, I really don't have a problem with that.

The problem I have is who decides who gets famous and who drifts into obscurity ? It is the same for the MPAA as the RIAA. Some stories teach lessons, as do some songs, but very very few. All of this, all of this, all video games, movies, most music, stupid little game boys, to an Xbox running an HDTV DLP 1080p projector. All junk.

I don't care if it costs $4 or $4,000,000, it is still junk. It has no purpose, and that is really all there is to it. When the shit hits the fan, I hope you find your junk tasty.

Actually it has a purpose, to make the rich richer.. Almost forgot.

Beware the sleeping tiger.

People who are very good at figuring out what sells and what doesn't.

If you're suggesting that there's some kind of conspiracy going on, please tell us more.  I always enjoy your conspiracy theories.

Google the number '09', and the digg result show up 1/2 way down the page. Don't bother clicking through to Rose' blog, the key itself is in the excerpted snippet on the results page.

Number 9, Number 9, Number 9...

All junk.

This is one thing I agree with you on.

I could live without the lot of it and wish I would but I'm working on that.

the internet is suppose to be a free place. i for one am glad of this victory.  it is too late for many forms of public property- but not so via the net.

the powers that control are salivating to control the net.

a small but celebtated victory indeed!
