FelinePersuasion -> Question for dog owners or groomers who have dogs with thick coats. (5/4/2007 7:11:09 PM)

I use an undercoat rake on sparky and the fur just comes flying off of him, litterally. Which is great the more fur off him outside less on carpets. Anyway I go over him tons and tons of times, and still tons of fur is flying off. How long in your experince with a dog that hasn't been brushed like this for a long time do you have to brush? Because I brushed him for like an hour and hes still shedding mass amounts.

I have a solution: cover your dog in a thick coat of nail polish. This ought to glue the flyaway hair down and hey presto! No more nuisance.

Well, see the undercoat rake is supposed to make it come off, which is good, other wise it comes off all over our dark blue carpet in concentrated area's. mainly every where he's been.

Questions....what type of dog, long haired or short haired and when was the last time you brushed him prior to this?

He's a cockerspaniel,  long haired he furs out in the winter and stays that way untill we shave him in march .  very furry and the fur is very fluffy, soft, great at attracting stickers. I'd say about almost a month with the rake.  I know, you're supposed to brush more than that, but honestly he does really well with out brushing minus the now intense shedding we see.

Edited to add I do check for stickers often, and no I do not let stickers stay in his fur

How are the temperatures in your area?  Perhaps it would be better
to have a groomer trim him down to an inch of hair all over.

I have had to do that with dogs who were shedding their winter
coats, which is what this sounds like.

shyinini -> RE: Question for dog owners or groomers who have dogs with thick coats. (5/4/2007 10:32:35 PM)

ummmm.... its shedding season ??  The winter coats are coming off our wonderful furry "children" !!

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Question for dog owners or groomers who have dogs with thick coats. (5/4/2007 11:05:25 PM)

shy, of course they are, but undercoat rakes are supposed to make even more hair come off, Giant amounts came off the first time too.  There's so much fur coming off in one brushing it looks like two cats got into a pissfit and ripped the others fur out lol.

Some shedding does happen, cause yes it's season to, but the undercoat rake makes the loose fur and hair come out as you brush, as opposed falling out all by itself.

Ven it's cold rainy wet most  these days:( One or two times a week it's sunny and hot. I shave him at home personally. I planned on it and then the weather went all nasty . Groomers are nice, they do a fabulous job, but honestly when you get him as short as we do in the summer you can't tell our job from theirs, plus he hates the cages and the blow dryers.

Ok, for a cockerspaniel, that's normal. Brush Sparky for about 30 minutes twice week for about a month. That should get all the underline out. Or you could just go ahead and shave him down as the weather is fine now, even with the rain.

typically a dog will shed 2x a year.  i dont bother to brush sheba. tho i will encourage her to run- and roll in grass -aand ill pull out clumps of hair.

an occasssional egg is good for the dogs coat.

i could literrally brush her for hours- it doesnt seem to get me anywhere.  therefore- she is restricted from some parts of the house.  the old place- her hair literally got in blower of furnace- and the motors buuurt out faster---

Ohboy I understand this one. Mickey the WonderDog looks like pigpen from Peanuts... with a huge cloud of dust (fur) surrounding her at all times. No matter how often I brush the fur just floats around her lol.
I've given up, so what if there is fur inside the fridge even?
Extra fiber......... yup.

a dog fed a proper diet will not over eat- or over shtt.

since dogs dont sweat they shed. dog hair doesnt vacumn very easily.

also- one wants to watch for their teeth- a bone or rawhide is good.

a dogs mouth is supposed to be cleaner then surgeon tools.

BTW- if you wash a dog that hasnt been brushed- it turns out matted- it is vry time consuming and sometimes painful to get teh matts out.

Mickey the Mutant has to be bribed for every feeding, she is not an over eater by any means! Her current 'treat' is half a can of green beans mixed into her dry food. Yum.

No it doesn't vaccum easily but she adores to actually be vaccummed! Turn it on and she comes arunnin'.

I brush hers with an old toothbrush, its kinda fun but slobbery hahaha.

Ewwww dog slobber. She is not allowed to kiss or lick me!

I have a husky mix.

I rake her coat outside until I get tired of it. Then I do it again the next day. I could do it all year, everyday.

So---if she looks nice, no small clumps of fur---I'm done.

For you guys who say brushing don't do any good are you using an undercoat rake?

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Question for dog owners or groomers who have dogs with thick coats. (5/5/2007 9:23:48 AM)

I washed sparky once while he was very hairy and it was a mess, clumps of fur came out the water turned ahorrid grey from all the dirt, he didn't really get to clean and when I was done the tub was nasty dirty mess I had to seive all the fur out before draining, then rinse.

soultoshare -> RE: Question for dog owners or groomers who have dogs with thick coats. (5/5/2007 9:50:39 AM)

the K9's at my last job literally shed year around.....i have brushed them for HOURS, and they get up and shake, and the air is still full of it.  My dog had two coats, a fine thin long hair of a chow, and the heavy thick undercoat of a lab...the easiest was to bursh him was to bathe him first...it seemed to get a lot of the loose hair out.  Of course, it took him better than a day to dry but once he was dry, i'd take him to the car wash and vacuum him...he hated the vacuum in the house, but loved the car wash one.

There are products on the market the area supposed to cut down on the shedding...i can't personally say they work, but i've seen things at Petco and Petsmart.  I've never know a cocker to shed profusely tho......usually just combing them out was all they needed.  When you shave him, do you do that saddleback type cut....shave his back, leave the legs long?  Is the problem just his hair on the back?  I actually found that getting a cat comb made getting Shiloh's undercoat out easier, the rake never worked.  But he needed to be brushed every three days or so, especially when he was shedding his winter coat out.

soul to share, no we shave him entirely from neck to tail. All though when he came to me from Animal Shelter he had that cut. He sheds from all over, but if you pet him it comes from his back all over your hands lol.
