This is far too interesting a subject for me to post one of my quickies. However, broadly, I can assure Oedipus that he did over-generalise. Women are just as visual as men. It's just that they process the info differently.

Personally I can be quite stimulated by images of people 'at it'... and put off by crap 'erotic' lit'.

But I mustn't generalise...

A friend recently put forward this observation:

Male pornography is visual.  Female pornography is verbal.

Any thoughts on whether this is true?  If so, why?

It's been fairly well known for a long time that males tend to be more receptive to visual cues and need less thought to be in the mood for "sex" while females tend to be more receptive to language cues and need more thought and energy to get "in the mood" because they associate certain emotions with sex and often don't like to experience sex without those emotions present.

Nothing new, and certainly not universal.

I've heard this said as: Men are like light switches; easy to turn on. Women are like irons; they need time to heat up.

In answer to the OP, while I can't find a specific reference, I've often heard that women, on average, simply use more words in communication than men. Perhaps this plays a part.

I think that was probably true about twenty years ago however statisticly it is starting to equel out from what I understand.  At the same time this is occuring the number of sex crimes commited by woman have also been on the rise... not that one causes the other just that its a reflection of the different attitudes woman have now concerning there sexuality. I believe that woman in general are more into the writen word then men are however now that the internet has come along more and more are getting into both pictures and words.  I think a lot of it has to do with image.  Woman have much more stress on them as far as how they appear in the public eye and years ago when all there were was magazines there was a stigma attached to it. Now with internet I feel that more woman are taking on the Vicorian perspective of duel existance.  They can show an image of a "proper" woman to the public and family but have a more "less than proper" existance online without anyone knowing. Whats really interesting is the way that this seems to effect the men and relationships that woman have with them as in there can be two groups of men in a womans life... the ones you marry and the ones you have fun with online. Its not as if this hasnt allways been around or that every woman does it but its just that its more popular with woman than what it once was. I think its also very dependent on which age group you look at when it comes to woman... there attitudes change a lot over the course of a womans lifetime so that a woman of lets say 35 could be totally opposite of who she was at lets say 25.

Before I begin, this is just my opinion based upon my own experience.

I don't necessarily believe that women are any less turned on by visual pornography. What I do believe, in conjunction with the written word, is that women enjoy being able to create their own images in their mind's eye. With a video , for example, you are left only with what the creator has chosen to show you. In a piece of erotica, though, a woman is able to take from it what she wants, discard what doesn't turn her on, and create her own porn. I know for me, little things in a video that I'm otherwise enjoying, might put me off instantly. Let's say, for example, you enjoy anal sex, but find the idea of a rimjob unappealing. When they incorporate both into the video, you're left with that one bothersome image in your mind, rather than the other things you were enjoying up until that point.

But I really do enjoy the visual side of porn. Some of the best sex I've ever had, especially with Master, has involved watching a pornographic video. Some of it also probably has to do with the fact that I'm a bit of a literature snob. -chuckles-

While I agree that men are certainly visual, I think women are too in a large degree. I like erotic stories and such but I prefer porn.

I have never enjoyed pictures of naked women (like in playboy) but I very much enjoy pictures of bondage, sex acts, etc. As long as I'm looking at sex, I get off on it (as opposed to looking at some naked chick with her legs spread.) For that matter, I don't like looking at still photos of naked men either.

I do love pics of intercourse, anythink kinky, etc and I love, love, love porn videos. I have a hard time masturbated without visual stimulation to help me through in fact.

I'm picky though....I'm become sort of jaded and the video has to be more than guy A fucking girl B. It has to have SOMETHING kinky in it, whether it's multiple partners, bdsm stuff, gang bang, whatever....I just can't get off on it if it's totally vanilla. I either want hentai (animated porn) or if it's live action, I want to see it rough, raw, dirty and nasty. I also can't stand to watch a porn with a plot of any nonsexual dialogue. I usually buy the "compilation" videos that are just sex scenes from various porns without all that boring excuse for a story line. I don't want to see them TALK. I want to see them FUCK.

I'd tell you, but I haven't quite fully got the grasp of what you're saying.

I think it's true that I'm more likely to be aroused by written smut than visual smut.

My rationale for this is that I'm turned on more by what I feel than by what I see.  So language is more sensual and directly connected to experience for me than pictures are.  And even though well-honed punctuation can be very sexy, I can still enjoy a bit of rough grammar from time to time.

If I look at pictures or videos of a bound (or otherwise controlled or restrained) woman, the images have probably been produced for someone to enjoy watching her predicament...rather than to necessarily illuminate what that predicament would feel like.

I definately prefer well-written literature; it provides more insight into the people's feelings and emotions, and what they're mentally going through at the time.  Also, I'm very sound-oriented, so I like reading people's descriptions of the sounds the people make during whatever it is they're doing, and the descriptions of the woman's voice, especially if she's 30 or older. *grins*

The etymology of Pornography is the writing of erotica. Pornai+graph. The images were congured in the brain, not the eyes.

Very interesting thread, thanks to all who responded thoughtfully.  My ideas were very different when I started reading, but have led me to wonder about instant gratification vs. delayed gratification; it is true in my experiences, and in the experiences of my subs, that delayed gratification, anticipation, and longing lead to greater heights that instant gratification... I tend to consider this topic from the perspective of committed perseverance and dedication vs. impatient craving surrenders...
