I am so freaking mad I can barely see straight. It started with the pet food recall but it just gets bigger everyday. There has been very little about it on the news...and that fact alone is very disturbing.

The FDA is supposed to be an organization that protects us. Why are they refusing to share the information they have with us? Isn't that against some law somewhere? The Freedom of Information Act? The Consumer Protection Act? Something???????

They have acknowledged at least two seperate manufacturers who the tainted goods were purchased by. But they refuse to name names. They refuse to tell us what products those tainted foods may be in. Pet foods....then hogs....now chickens.

It would be really nice to know what the hell we are eating?

I would really suggest you read this, because if we change our laws to coincide with the WTO guidelines we will have even less control over our own food supply and the laws that govern it.

As the sounds of stepping to the New World Order is heard ever louder on the horizon.

I have read it, thanks julia.

I just can't get over the scope of this. I also can't get over how many people seem to be unaware or appear to be not really disturbed by it.

juliaoceania -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 10:09:08 AM)

I have worked with food off and on for over 10 years. I have seen some very nasty type of things, many of them against food law. My exhusband managed a chicken ranch, and it also was filled with nastiness.

I assume everything I eat could be contaminated, and the more hands that come into contact with it, the more likelihood that it will be contaminated. I am concerned, but I am always concerned. If I was as concerned as you are for my dog, I would feed him food I prepared by hand... there are probably recipes online.

mistoferin -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 10:17:12 AM)

julia, I am doing that. But now the information that I'm getting suggests it is in the human food supply too. Animals that WE eat have been fed those tainted foods. Those ingredients are also in literally thousands of products on the market today....human food. How do we know what is safe at this point?

They say it is likely an intentional tampering....that these chemicals create elevated false protein readings and that they were likely added to garner a higher price. How do we know that was the intent? Was it to make money....or could it have been to deliberately poison the food supply?

pahunkboy -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 10:21:06 AM)

I had food poisening once. it was the horriblest thing. i wanted to bang my head against tthe toilet and die.

since then- only slowy did i eat potentially bad food.

lately i been on a kick against processed foods.

despite ppl online knowing what big pharma has set into laws- upcoming to the us. no mention on cnn etc.

why?

The sad thing is, if they choose to hide it from us there is not much we can do, except go vegetarian for a few months and see how it plays out. Which would really piss me off because I am rather a meat eater.

In this article you will note that this contamination might have it's roots as far back as the summer of 2006. How much of this crap may we have already consumed?
It also references that at least 10 firms sold this "salvage" food as livestock feed.

Makes me have to ask, why are the animals we are consuming being fed "salvage" feeds?

Nikolette -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 10:44:22 AM)

I'm a sustainable eater.... This is a phrase I've sort of coined from a concept of sustainable eating that I won't even bother to get into right now.... But basically it mixes concepts between veganism, environmentalism, animal rights, and organic food all in one thing. Sustainable eating is basically the answer to this type of country/state wide corporate farming disasters.

My recommendation for anyone who is seriously concerned about their meat products is to start to buy organic meat- not only is it better for the environment but its better for you and tastes better. You don't have to completely cut meat out of your diet that way, and are more certain of what's come into contact with your meat. It IS more expensive... but this is because they have to have higher prices because it costs more to grow them organically, additionally they can have higher prices because its a smaller select market- if the market widens (because more people switch) the prices become more competitive and will drop some. BUT when ever I consider the difference in price... I think about what I am paying NOT to eat. Antibiotics, animals fed their own species toxic flesh, pollutants, growth hormones etc etc. And its worth it. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

So if you are concerned- that is a viable option. Yes it costs more, yes it can be more work (since many convenience foods aren't organic and come from the very most iffy sources) , but its your health and safety that you are paying with otherwise.

Even if you live in a region where a lot of organic meat isn't available- there are MANY resources online for you to buy from.

Personally at my home we only eat organic, cruelty free animal products as a standard (and no pork or beef). Of course occasionally we lift the ban for special occasions. There are a lot of reasons that went into the choice. But we feel more secure, and for me personally I am sensitive to dairy products I FEEL a lot better having switch to organic milk. We also eat a lot of meat and dairy alternatives.

But I'd like to say I'm not interested in getting into any kind of a meat/vegan/organic debate. I just wanted to offer up a suggestion if you are worried that has helped me personally feel better.

Anyone who is interested in more information on sustainable eating, organic food, cruelty free animal products etc is more than welcome to contact me on the other side. I have tons of links and advice on how to find it cheap and good quality.

mistoferin -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 10:53:33 AM)

At least one of the foods on the pet recall list was advertised as a completely organic, human based food that supposedly was entirely free of imported products.....so much for truth in advertising.

Nikolette -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 12:00:12 PM)

mistoferin: True that can occasionally happen because people see a big profit in saying its organic when its not. This is one of the major reasons why people who want to eat organic need to do their own research into the company and the products rather than taking it at total face value. Even then it can be iffy sometimes because those people are often going on the word of honor of THEIR suppliers. There are not enough clearly stated federal regulations on "certified organic". This is one additional reason to be interested in sustainable eating, which involves close relationships between food suppliers and you, the consumer.

deadbluebird -> RE: Contaminated foods....not just pet (4/25/2007 12:55:33 PM)

there is much in this world that people should be concerned about that they are not. this is really the least of our issues.

I am angry as well. Especially knowing that the reason the chemical ended up in the gluten to begin with was so that the manufacturer (there's a big problem right there...food and manufacturing should not go hand in hand) added it purposefully in order to charge a higher price for the gluten (because it would test at a higher nitrogen level and therefore be assumed to contain more protein than it really did).

I am more and more convinced that the only way to know what is in your food is to grow/raise it yourself and/or co-op with like-minded people who do the same. This instance has only made me more determined to work toward this reality for my own family.
