I'm a sustainable eater.... This is a phrase I've sort of coined from a concept of sustainable eating that I won't even bother to get into right now.... But basically it mixes concepts between veganism, environmentalism, animal rights, and organic food all in one thing. Sustainable eating is basically the answer to this type of country/state wide corporate farming disasters. My recommendation for anyone who is seriously concerned about their meat products is to start to buy organic meat- not only is it better for the environment but its better for you and tastes better. You don't have to completely cut meat out of your diet that way, and are more certain of what's come into contact with your meat. It IS more expensive... but this is because they have to have higher prices because it costs more to grow them organically, additionally they can have higher prices because its a smaller select market- if the market widens (because more people switch) the prices become more competitive and will drop some. BUT when ever I consider the difference in price... I think about what I am paying NOT to eat. Antibiotics, animals fed their own species toxic flesh, pollutants, growth hormones etc etc. And its worth it. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. So if you are concerned- that is a viable option. Yes it costs more, yes it can be more work (since many convenience foods aren't organic and come from the very most iffy sources) , but its your health and safety that you are paying with otherwise. Even if you live in a region where a lot of organic meat isn't available- there are MANY resources online for you to buy from. Personally at my home we only eat organic, cruelty free animal products as a standard (and no pork or beef). Of course occasionally we lift the ban for special occasions. There are a lot of reasons that went into the choice. But we feel more secure, and for me personally I am sensitive to dairy products I FEEL a lot better having switch to organic milk. We also eat a lot of meat and dairy alternatives. But I'd like to say I'm not interested in getting into any kind of a meat/vegan/organic debate. I just wanted to offer up a suggestion if you are worried that has helped me personally feel better. Anyone who is interested in more information on sustainable eating, organic food, cruelty free animal products etc is more than welcome to contact me on the other side. I have tons of links and advice on how to find it cheap and good quality.
