It's called apoptosis. It is the complete and natural death of a cell. As we age, our cells divide in a worse and worse way because of defects in the DNA and it's corruption. Thus we look ugly when we are old and will die no matter how healthy we are. We are programmed for death- each and every cell in us knows when to "die". If a cell were to become immortal, it would not specialize into say a liver or blood cell, and would replicate constantly and thus become what we know of as cancer. Our human chromosomes are also becoming corrupted with each birth on the same theory, thus the Y chromosome is having problems, i.e. a now forseable point in the future when men might not be like the men we know today. Everything is limited, and so are species. Evolution comes in here, and once enough changes occur in response to the envirnoment, the primary animal will no longer resemble the final product that will emerge many many years later. But...with our technology and current comfortable lifestyles, we have almost put a halt to evolution and might be a dead end on our family tree.
