Sekhemet -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 1:06:04 AM)

25 to 34 remain but of that number only 6 are reproductive age girls??? with only 4 rearing cubs ...

where do they GET this stuff from???
Yer saying you want Me to believe that with all that dick and such a small supply of pussy for them cats, that only FOUR of SIX are pregnant????  DAYUM what sorta birth control the other 2 on or where are they hiding out to avoid the rape teams???  But better yet and once again, less than a 1/4 of the population is female, maybe even like 1/6th?  HOW is that done???  The article stinks of bad math, or something amiss in wonderland anyway.

i highly doubt they are incorrect in the numbers.
perhaps females are not as common. my dog had 8 pups and only 2 were female.
perhaps the females are not as smart so therefore easier to kill.
perhaps they are more apt to try to care for their babys so get killed easier.
is your responce a joke? although i don't understand a mentality that would joke about such a sad situation.

LadyEllen -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 1:56:29 AM)

This is really sad.

But I suspect that if any one of us were a dirt poor subsistence farmer whose livestock and livelihood were being taken by a leopard, we'd kill it too.

deadbluebird -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 2:05:31 AM)

the female found shot and beat to death was discovered in russia's  barsovy national wildlife refuge so i am guessing it was not eating any lifestock. but perhaps i am incorrect.

LadyEllen -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 2:09:31 AM)

Well, it could be eating the deer that I'm poaching to keep my family alive.

The issue, whichever way we turn, is too many people.

All the deer will die from diseases when there are no more leopards. If there are leopards, there must be healthy deer. If there are no leopards...

Quite. And stupidity, which also explains the excessive number of people.

juliaoceania -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 7:30:42 AM)

This animal is already what we call genetically extinct, unless they have a lot of eggs and sperm saved somewhere .... very sad.

selfbnd411 -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 8:19:16 AM)

It's the wild west in most of the developing world, though.  Russia, China, Brazil and India (called the BRIC) are basically going through the kind of rapacious development we went through from 1865-1930.  I'm not saying it's right--it's terribly short sighted, and I doubt it would cost much or require much effort for Russia to set up a preserve to at least boost the animal population as we have done in California with the condors, but I highly doubt anything will be done.

Sinergy -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/24/2007 7:50:25 PM)

Leopards will not undergo estrus, mate, or have children in captivity.  Their range is measured in square miles, and they need solitude with their mate to breed.

It is not really an issue that humans are killing them for eating our cows.  They are not reproducing because they lack the environment required.

deadbluebird -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/25/2007 12:09:43 AM)

Sinergy you are both correct and incorrect.
that female was found shot and beat.
leaving only seven left. that Is an issue.
so it matters little if it was eating its cows or not, we Are killing them.
they are reproducing though, four of the seven are rearing cubs.
however is that enough to continue their life much longer?
and even if it is will we stop killing them?
however their environment being swallowed is a large part of the problem also.

Sinergy -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/25/2007 6:27:46 AM)

I am not arguing with what happened to this particular leopard.

I am simply pointing out that the breed is going to die out as mankind expands and destroys / confines it's natural range.

I love the animal.  They can be captured wild and domesticated in about a week by humans.  They are a study of grace in motion when chasing down their prey.  I do see the writing on the wall about it's possibility of long term survival.  Human presence, even if we are not destroying them, will kill them off.

I was reading Jared Diamond's The Third Chimpanzee a few weeks ago, and he was talking about a continent (I want to say Madagascar) where the primary predator was rendered extinct by man along with it's major prey.

The prey was a 6-8 foot tall relative of the Ostrich.  The predator was a bird related to an Eagle that was evolutionarily primed to take out (death from above) 6 foot tall standing prey, a gambit which transferred immediately to a new prey source when people arrived on that continent.  Guess what kind of bird human beings had issues with.

They prey bird was taken out because it did not fear humans and got renamed "lunch" in short order.

Sometimes people render animals extinct by design.  Sometimes people render animals extinct because they dont see the larger picture.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/25/2007 6:29:01 AM)

Why do the animals in 21 century deserve a reprieve from extinction? Are they some how more deserving than all the thousands upon thousands upon thousands of species that have globe before them?

As to having too many people on the planet...

The entire whole of humanity could live quite comfortably within the boundaries of the state of Rhode Island.

Who do think you are? Julian Simon... ? Perhaps you have never heard of the concept of carrying capacity? Then again, there are probably many things you have not heard or know about.

Try living in a country that is already pushing it's carrying capacity, do they restrict water use in your city? Most cities in Australia are under water restriction policies, and they still encourage population growth.

Here is another tidbit of info for you:
quote:

In their refined study, Giampietro and Pimentel found that 10 kcal of exosomatic energy are required to produce 1 kcal of food delivered to the consumer in the U.S. food system. This includes packaging and all delivery expenses, but excludes household cooking).20 The U.S. food system consumes ten times more energy than it produces in food energy. This disparity is made possible by nonrenewable fossil fuel stocks.

I would like to see the population of earth "comfortably" living on slightly more than 3000 square kilometers. If you believe that you're an economist or just plain ignorant.

Giampietro and Pimental used science to reach their conclusion. Can you enlighten me as to how you reached yours?

Casie -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/25/2007 11:00:04 AM)

Poor kitty. But thats just how it is. Weather or not it's humans fault or not. Species come and the go. Many animals have dyed out over the course of the earth it's a sad but true cycle

LadyEllen -> RE: only seven females left.. (4/25/2007 2:20:18 PM)

If we are to conclude that the unsuccessful species who cannot compete with us must go to the wall, then how is it that we dont allow unsuccessful humans who cannot compete with the rest of us to go the same way? Either nature rules and all the weak must perish, or we might think that a rare animal is as valuable to conserve as a few million benefit dependents.

But then, our God is made in our image, not in the leopard's.
