mistoferin -> Spring cleaning....Ideas??? (4/23/2007 8:40:33 AM)

I have all of the windows and doors open and am in the process of my spring cleaning, which is always refreshing and renewing for me. Today I am steam cleaning the carpets and I am wondering if anyone might have ideas for scents that I can use in my final rinse. I'd like to use something natural that won't leave a residue, damage the carpets or the steam cleaning equipment and that will leave a lingering light, clean and refreshing scent. I also have dogs so I don't want to use anything that will be irritating to them. Any ideas would be appreciated!

well, i don't have much for suggestions for the carpet, but ain't it GRAND to just open everything up and get a lungful of FRESH air?  I've been tackling the apartment the last week....bits at a time...if i try to do it all at once, all i do is end up with the mess scattered all over!  Maybe if you can find something like febreeze with a scent to it, you can use that on your rugs...it should be fine, since you'd spray it on the carpet anyway.  I have cats, and use it on the carpets all the time, it doesn't seem to bother them.

Good luck!

What about lavender or something along those lines?

That is kinda what I was thinking. Maybe if I were to make up little cheesecloth bags of "stuff" that I could toss into the water. I love the smell of citrus but I am not sure if that may discolor the carpets or leave a residue.

Another thing I would be concerned with citrus depending on what part you used to get the scent.........the skins have alot of oil and I would be concerned about an oily residue in the carpet. Myself, I would try to stick with a scent that derives from a leaf or flower and is not too overpowering.

baking soda.  also for smelly gym shoe smell sprinkle a dash of baby powder in them and tumble them in the air. this will cut dowm on order- the amount of times u have to wash ur shoes and in effet they will last longer

since i moved im terrably disorganized.

today i started painting the trim outside.

i need to seriously throw some items out.

Why would you want to scent the carpets?  I can understand the appeal of having a scent, but why would you want to embed it?

I think fresh air is the best scent.

For the same reason you already stated. People buy scented fabric softeners so that there clothing will have a scent, scented upholstery sprays, scented candles, potpourri.....all to scent their homes. I am not wishing for something overpowering.....and I am sure that it will dissipate quickly...but I do enjoy light, refreshing scents.

Citrus cleaners are supposed to be wonderful for removing odors.  As well as the fact they smell nice.

Myself, I usually go with plain old bleach.  Of course that doesnt' smell nice.

Twicehappy2x -> RE: Spring cleaning....Ideas??? (4/23/2007 5:52:25 PM)

OK, if you are looking for something natural, light and non irritating here a few ideas. Go buy clear vanilla flavoring, try lavender water, rose water, real almond extract, none of those should stain and all will leave a refreshing scent. The clear vanilla at about a 1/8 of a cup to a gallon of water would be my choice.

If you can get your hands on fresh lavender boil it adding a drop or to of Everclear or vodka to the boiling water it extracts more of the scent though it may stain a light colored carpet.

I have aromatherapy burners and burn essential oils.  Sometimes I want ginger or lavendar or pine, sometimes I want tea tree oil.

LOL

i always spray lysol after i steam clean the carpets!  It has all sorts of scents and not only do i have clean carpets.. i feel like they're also doubly santitized!  Woot Woot.

I've been doing alot of cleaning lately....... and i'm telling you going through stuff and tossing it, is lovely.  i also like to re arrange furniture.  Well cant do that completely now...... but i can re arrange little things!  Love opening all the windows and every time it gets cool........ whoosh goes the windows.

You know they say that air inside of houses/ect is worse for you then outside air?  Everything being contained and what not.

::sigh:: i want to add painting to my list of things to do..... but with so much big heavy furniture..... gah.  Nothing nicer then freshly cleaned carpets, fresh paint on the walls, and an organized house.

Lysols is one of those lovely substances (like hand sanitizer gels) that is contributing to the evolution of super bacteria.

It kills 98% of the bacteria.  That which is strong enough to not die breeds and their children become immune to it over time.

I think I own some, but I prefer to clean my place with bleach.

If the scent doesn't need to be in the carpet I would recommend one of those lightbulb diffusers.  The oil for them comes in some subtle, yet lovely scents.  Of course I'm all for putting dried lavender (my favorite) or other herbs in vases as decoration that doubles as room scent.

mnottertail -> RE: Spring cleaning....Ideas??? (4/23/2007 8:40:01 PM)

real vanilla, like you get in the Mcwhatever bottles, or anise or maple, not the artificial, I would stay away from acids like citrus.  check the extracts aisle near the salt and cumin.
