pontifier -> Percentage of people... (4/22/2007 11:16:09 PM)

I'm fairly new to this whole scene, and in the last few weeks I have really been exploring my options. I have been surprised at the number of people I've talked to who are interested in this stuff too. I was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what percentage of people are into some form of BDSM, and what percentage of people not into it are open to try it. It seems like almost everyone I talk to is interested in it to some degree, though some are vehemently opposed.

greetings pontifier,

i would guess that at least half the sexually active adult population in america either practices bdsm in some form or would be open to it, if not more than that. this is, of course, a wild guess, and i am casting a wide net here by defining "bdsm" loosely enough to include anything from taken in hand christian relationships to enjoying being spanked or held down to some of the more extreme things many of the posters here have done and the all-encompassing nature of bdsm and d/s in some of our relationships. there are many people who practice things that could be considered "bdsm" and think of it as simply liking rough sex, and what have you. i think that if we include those practices in the census, so to speak, it's likely that a large percentage of the population could be included.

just some thoughts. :)

annabelle.

There are a lot of us kinky people out there! I don't know that anyone has done a recent sexuality study, like the Kinsey reports from the late 40s, early 50s. You could check their website, http://www.kinseyinstitute.org/ and see if they have anything more recent.

Hello, Pontifier......

I think that even if one could find some studies and percentages somewhere, it would still be hard to get an even-somewhat accurate idea.  I believe that there are many who would not want to admit to this side of themselves.

From my own personal experience, I have only met 3 people into D/s, etc., outside of some sort of BDSM meeting or site.  My husband, my sister, and a female friend.

I have always found this surprising.  I work in emergency personnel, a job that tends to make co-workers closer than the norm.  We also tend to be a bit twisted.   As a result, we share things that would make the general public blush and know intimate details about each of our lives.  I have yet to meet or "out" anyone with my proclivities.  In fact, my friends lovingly call me a "pervert" over what, to me, is quite tame. Bring up spanking, for example, and the men say "She's my wife!  Besides, she would kill me!", and the women say "I would kill him!". Yet for many of the same cheating on their significant other is normal, while it is an alien concept to me.

99 44/100%  UNpure!

seriously, way over 80% into bdsm, by behavior, not by 'what do we call this that we do'.   The caveman with the club stereotype was not invented on Madison Ave.

It's also more fun than 69.  (Play around with how you write the numerals.)

My take on this would be that noone is actually strictly vanilla. Be it the occasional spank whilst having sex or full on 24/7 D/s lifestyle. Everyone has their kinks, its just to what degree that differs.

Suleiman -> RE: Percentage of people... (4/23/2007 3:42:25 PM)

Folks who are willing to admit to being seriously interested in this sort of thing runs a little undeer ten percent of the population, last I checked (but it's been a while). Folks who are willing to admit that they have tried some aspect of it (having sex while tied up, giving or recieving a spanking, etc) and report a positive experience probably runs well over sixty percent, and might go much higher. I'm pretty much only counting informed practice and willing admission. IMHO, folks who count every arguable instance, such as the gentle poster who mentioned the caveman stereotype, are stretching a bit far.

Gloria Brame in her research for Different Loving had the figure at about 20% of population has some type of BDSM sexual orientation at some level.

so far i have only met one man who was absolutely unable to see me again because he was so against the idea of BDSM.  to his credit, he is very intelligent, kind, loving, and we had several conversations about it.  he asked many questions which i answered as best i could.    in the end, it simply isnt for him.  i understood and harbored no ill will, nor did he.
as for others,  some dabble, some dive in deep.   basically, you like what you like.  no way to put a number on it really.

The did a survey of 20,000 people in Australia recently on the topic and found that for males it was about 2% and for females about 1.4%. The article did not specify the roles of the participants and seemed to focus heavily on submissive males who visit professionals and not the life style in general; but here's the link for those interested:

From personal experience, I have had a few lovers that were into bondage or spanking. I think a lot of people are adventurous and try at least a little of it at home. Movies like The Secretary and 9 1/2 weeks have popularized these practices, giving people the idea to try them out on their own. Who knows what the actual number is.

I get that from the Mrs. too.

but if the line was at 80%, I'd still bet the 'overs'.

peace and good wagers,
