Focus50 -> Positive BDSM in the News (4/17/2007 2:20:37 AM)

For those who appreciate some occasional validation from the vanilla world; an article published in today's local newspaper (Newcastle Herald - Australia), Tuesday, April 17 2007.

Title: Happy is the man with racks of ties that bind.

Bondage and discipline may make men happier, according to the first national survey of Australians' fetish habits.

The phone survey of 20,000 people has revealed that 2% of Australia's men and 1.4% of women admit to enjoying dominance, submission and sadomasochistic sex in the past year.

The survey results, to be presented at the World Association of Sexual Health congress in Sydney this week, give the first snapshot of Australians involved in bondage behaviour.

These fetishes were most common among gay, lesbian and bisexual people and heterosexuals who were "bi-interested", lead researcher Dr Juliet Richters of the University of NSW, said yesterday.

In women, bondage, discipline, domination and submission were most popular among the under 20-year-olds and those who had a partner with whom they did not live.

Men into bondage, discipline, domination and submission scored significantly better on a scale of psychological wellbeing than other men.

Least happy were men who reported being attracted to men but who had never acted on their desire and did not regard themselves as gay.

Two percent of men and 1.4% of women seems a lot considering the relative few numbers of fellow Aussies who have found their way to sites such as CollarMe....  And buggar-all from my home city (gotta move to Melbourne, me thinx!)

Oh, and I'm personally NOT gay!  lol

Any thoughts?

2.0% of 50% of 20,000 = 200 (+/- 4) men   {196-204 men}
1.4% of 50% of 20,000 = 140 (+/- 4) women {136-144 women}

Population of Australia (rough): 20.8 * 10^6
2.0% of 50% of Austraila = 21(0,000) men
1.4% of 50% of Austalia = 15(0,000) women

Population of Earth: 6.6 billion (rough):  6.6 *10^9
2.0% of 50% of Earth = 66 million
1.4% of 50% of Earth = 46 million

Assuming:
-2.0% of men on Earth are into BDSM-esque activities
-1.4% of women on Earth are into BDSM-esque activities
-The population is 50% male, 50% female (false assumption towards the earlier and later years.  Approximate.)
-The Earth's population to be about 6.6 billion.
-All people are on Earth.  ("People" refers to Earthlings!)
Then..
(0.0195+0.0135)/2 * 6.55 * 10^9 to (0.0204999999999 + 0.01449999999999)/2 * 6.64999999999 * 10^9 people are into BDSM-esque activities.

108,075,000 to 116,375,000 people are into BDSM-esque activites.
(So, about 112 million people give or take 4 million, roughly.)

Yeah.. I really should be doing my Engineering homework.. but BDSM is more interesting. =/

I would like to note something from Sociology 101:
"Poor people are more likely to be economically liberal and socially conservative."
"Rich people are more likely to be econonmically conversative and socially liberal."
With this in mind, Australia, being a more developed nation, is likely to have a higher ratio of "socially liberal" individuals- the demographic that would support BDSM more readily.  Taking this source of error, and no others, into account, one would have to say that the 112 million figure is probably high.  However, this is not considering more dynamic social issues and assumes that the test was accurate for the Austrilian population after a sample size of twenty thousand is assumed to be honest.

The majority of countries in the world number fewer than 112 million in population.. such as, Austalia, above, having only 20.8 million (18.6% of 112 million).

Possible ways to increase accuracy:
-Find other polls.
-Better define "BDSM-esque activities".
-Take into consideration different types of populations and their appropriate weights.
-Better estimate global population.
-Acquire credible means of dividing the population based on gender, or more accurate gender-based population figures.

Edit:  Math mistake.

Do you have a link?  The exact wording of polls is often vital in understanding them.

Just to point out, it sounds like they're saying there's a correlation between deviant sexualities and BDSM-eque participations, not that most BDSM-esque people are non-heterosexual or that most non-heterosexuals are into BDSM.

So, basically, less of us BDSM'rs are straight than in the vanilla world.  We gets ta be specialishness!

Sorry, no link - I scanned it off the local paper (then edited all the scanning typos....)

I'll keep an eye out for any further coverage of this "World Association of Sexual Health congress in Sydney", though it sounds like it covers a lot more than just BDSM type activity.

If you lived here, you'd understand my quiet surprise at reading such an article in the local "rag" - generally VERY conservative.

For the record, my city numbers about 400,000.  Assuming 200,000 are female, there should be about 2800 into some form of BDSM - minus those too young or too old.  I know about 8 local fem/subs, 2 Dommes and one switch.  There are also about a further 3 female CM members (last count) who haven't answered my mail.... lol  I guess degree of interest also plays a major role - many wouldn't dare seek out strangers of likemind....

Focus.

CuriousLord -> RE: Positive BDSM in the News (4/17/2007 5:20:37 AM)

Ick, good point.  In my calculations post, I used "2.0% of males" and "1.4% of females".. I didn't consider that the study probably meant "2.0% of adult males" and "1.4% of adult females", or some specific range.  It'd probably cut down the final figure pretty well.. would need to recalculate with an adult-population-of-Earth figure.

It is a neat article.  I'm wondering how many journalists out there might have a kink or two to get out into the public's new reports..

Curious Lord: You're my kinda guy, as far as peering skeptically at the methods and results of polls (I used to do a bit of research, many moons ago).

I am glad somebody is doing polls on this stuff - at the least it means someone cares about that area of knowledge-gathering, I think.

Focus50: Interesting poll (accurate or not).
