LadyEllen -> Obesity Gene Discovered - not another fat thread! (4/12/2007 2:49:36 PM)

Just reported on ITV news here - a study has identified genetic reasons for why some people are predisposed to obesity, and thence the health problems associated with that condition.

This was heralded in the report as good news.

BUT - what then are the implications for insurance purposes? Health/medical care insurance, critical illness insurance, life insurance (a requirement for mortgages here in the UK).

Can we now expect insurers to request testing for this genetic marker, and to then either reject offering cover or to hike premia for those found to be positive?

And what about other genetic markers for all kinds of conditions? Can we look forward to many of us becoming a genetic underclass, forbidden opportunities in life because of what we inherited? (no medical cover, no mortgage, maybe no job even).

Didn't it turn out to be related to the submissiveness chromosome?

I thought it was connected to the leather pants receptors in the brain.

Watch Gattica. It is about 10 years old. If you aren't genetically engineered, the best you can hope for is being a janitor or some other crappy job. It stars Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke.

Ahh, a built-in excuse!

I hope these people who have been found to possess this horrid gene are not just passing this gene forward on to their unsuspecting offspring....Maybe this is why Angelina Jolie has chosen to adopt?   She is such a humanitarian!!!

(The world could use a few more of her genes).

I don't think y'all have been very reponsive to the OP here.

Now, I don't think it'll really get to the point where you can't buy a house because of this genetic predisposition, but that doesn't mean you won't pay more. Like in the US, when you have less than 20% equity in your property you pay Private Mortgage Insurance. This does nothing for you, it guarantees the bank payments if you default, and for a limited time.

I think if people don't start waking up, you might see a request for medical history on a loan application. Strangely though, in the US they give out loans to people who can never live long enough to pay them back. I mean if you are 60 and take out a 30 year mortgage, of course it will outlive you.

There are times when it is smart to do that, if you are getting a real steal on a place, or if your income from other sources will pay it off quickly. When that happens you sign it over to the executor of your will. Transfer the title, pay the taxes, it is worth it.

Actually land ownership has become controlled by the government. In fact that goal was one of the chief reasons people are no longer allowed to defend themselves.Only the politicians, who decide who gets what no matter who paid for it.

This has been working for awhile, it is coming apart at the seams though. Eminent domain is becaoming a bigger issue in the US, and actually, if the fire the US set in the middle east catches, eminent domain might be the least of our worries.

But they already have their foot in the door for what the OP was referring to. They can require that you take a physical to get their medical insurance. Therefore they can require it before giving you a job. So it has already happened. At least partway.

They get your height weight and whether or not you smoke, that is discrimination. Hey wait, it is wrong for us to practice discrimination for any reason, why is it OK for them ?

Wait, I forgot, MONEY. They bought that power from our "leaders".

Laugh it up, it will be over soon.

It would be nice if everyone who has the "Fat" gene would be forced to wear a large red "F" on their forehead....This would prevent "normal" people from mating with them....And what if you can "catch" this dreaded fat disease....I'm writing my congressman right now.

They'll have a drug out in a year, I can envision the commercial now.

Ask your doctor if skinnyDNAric is for you. Side effects include

Oops, silly me, I would have to take a week off to describe all of those.

Anyone remember the name of that fat-substitute stuff that
was pulled off of the market?  It was used for potato chips
and similiar foods.  "Anal leakage" was a possible side effect!
WTF!?  [:'(]

hisannabelle -> RE: Obesity Gene Discovered - not another fat thread! (4/12/2007 10:02:13 PM)

greetings,

we pretty much already consent to this kind of thing by giving family history info. it's common knowledge that things like diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer, etc. are in part a matter of genetic predisposition, and how many times have you had to fill out those family history forms?

i personally think it's wrong for people to discriminate in terms of health care, etc. based on genetics, but that's just me. i also think it's bs that most health insurance companies take forever to cover preexisting conditions, too. i remember when i was younger i put down anxiety and depression in my health history and my mom used to yell at me and tell me i'd never get good health care coverage if i told people i had that...and i'm sitting there thinking, better for the doctor to know just in case he decides to prescribe certain meds or do certain things (and unfortunately life-endangering screwups based on lack of medical history or lack of attention paid to what meds you're already taking happen way too often).

unfortunately you can't win when it comes to stuff like this. health insurance companies will use whatever means they can to deny coverage...i'd be surprised if this doesn't become a required test when applying for insurance.

annabelle.

Termyn8or -> RE: Obesity Gene Discovered - not another fat thread! (4/12/2007 10:31:10 PM)

Any insurance in any form removes the responsibility for one's own actions, and therefore on it's face is wrong.

But then if we weren't taxed and fee'ed into destitution we would have money to pay it for ourself. Who said doctors need to be rich, and who said the CEOs of the hospitals need to be ten times richer ?

We spend more and get less than any civilized nation on Earth. Note the peculiar absence of the word 'other' in the previous sentence. What does the US rank in birth mortality ? Care and general health of the aged, general care and prenatal care ?

Nutrition of it's Citizens, care for war veterans, the list goes on.

The DNA is not the only thing to blame for our poor health.

"predisposed to obesity" does not mean you are going to suffer nor will have to suffer from obesity.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Obesity Gene Discovered - not another fat thread! (4/13/2007 1:36:04 AM)

Good point. In the discussion I heard it was pointed out that this gene may make it more difficult to lose weight.
The same things are required to put it on ie usually eat to excess.
Knowing how loaded are these announcements further investigation will probably turn it into a "do not very much gene"

I think it is self evident that some people are pre disposed to be large and its quite easy to see who is fat due to excess and who is fat due to "normal" development. IMO anyway.

servilecat -> RE: Obesity Gene Discovered - not another fat thread! (4/13/2007 2:12:34 AM)

What was the movie with Kurt Russell?  They were creating the perfect little hybrids?  They ended up shooting the fat kid because he couldnt keep up.  The Soldier...

There are so few perfectly bred specimens anymore, i don't think we need to worry too much about the genetic testing.  It seems eventually, as we watch insurance companies abandoning  hurricane stressed areas, we will see them abandoning so many humans that we will have to adopt a national government healthcare program.
Most people only get genetic counseling when they are adults and most likley would already be obese.  i say take a look at Mom or Sis if you really want to know.  Then though, there are those wonderful diseases such as polycystic ovarian syndrome that causes obesity and insulin resistance and isnt hereditary....and certain cancers arent hereditary such as cervical and vulvar.

A few times i've had new patient paperwork from a doctor that asked me questions such as how often i have sex, have i had sex with women, how many people have i had sex with and other such questions.  i refuse to be part of their poll.  i write my name phone number and insurance information and hand it back.  If something comes up that any of those questions need to be addressed i am sure i will have the answers and until then they can kiss my @$$.
I've been misdiagnosed by quacks so many times, i know i have to be my own physician anyway. i am so tired of doctors and the pharmaceutical companies.

(Yeah, but Vaseline tastes better, and if you fall asleep eating Vaseline, you don't wake up in the morning with your lips stuck together).
