If you ever travel to the Chimney Rock in North Carolina, you might see something weird-I did. I was 18 and was with my dad. The trail was rough-the upper one. They had torn out the walkways because they had just made Last of the Mohicans there(you can see this place at the end sequence of the movie where Nathanial fights Magua). The humidity was really high-it was August. It looked like it would storm. So I was ahead of my dad and I came up this slope and stopped for a breather. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw this little man! He was short, about 4 feet tall, but all I absorbed was that he was wearing a little red vest or coat. I did a double take and there was this branch swinging back and forth. He was gone.

My Dad caught up and I said,"I just saw this little man!" He just said nothing, like he thought I was nuts. I had never been there before and didn't know any of the local stories. I was there as an after thought. My Dad was trying to keep my mom from divorcing him and he was taking her on trips and buying her stuff and my mom invited me along.

Years later I was telling someone about the Chimney Rock and wanted to show them a picture, but couldn't find the pictures. So I looked in the 1973 World Book Encyclopedia that I had since I was born. I looked up North Carolina. There was a picture of the Chimney Rock. Under the picture, in blue writing, there was an entry,"Some people believe spirits called little people live at the Chimney Rock"!

I looked into it more and there was an indian legend about little people living there. They threw rocks at the Cherokee(I think it was Cherokee. It was before they were moved by the government). A shaman cast a spell and turned into a giant bird and flapped his wings and created a tornado that blew the little people away. I guess he missed some.

I also read in a brochure for a hotel there(on the internet) that these little people only appear under certain weather conditions(not specified in the article). Based on my experience, it would be hot, high humidity, and about to storm.

I went back a second time a couple year ago with a girlfriend(the chick that got me into pulling hair) and her kids. I didn't see it that time. I think the first time, I saw it because I was alone.

I have heard about these little people...a sighting is extremely rare and you should consider yourself extremely lucky to have laid eyes on one...I have a friend of mine whose grandfather was shaman in the Cherokee nation and often spoke to my friend about these little folks...He said that they were fast and sneaky and not to be trusted...When my friend asked his Grandfather, the shaman, what these people are called he replied...."midgets."

I always wanted to talk to some Cherokee guy and find out what he knows about it.

This guy called the Art Bell show one night when George Noory was hosting. He said when he was a kid, they went on a field trip to the woods in North Carolina and he saw a gnome! I started listening more intently. He said that they were all afraid of it and threw rocks at it. All he can remember was that he was wearing a hat with a feather in it. Just like my sighting, he couldn't remember anything about it, but one little thing he was wearing. He didn't mention the Chimney Rock, but it was the woods in North Carolina and the Chimney Rock sounds like a place you might take a field trip too.

Has anyone on here been to the Chimney Rock?

domiguy -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 5:42:08 PM)

I will never return, those little fuckers were always stealing my lucky charms.

popeye1250 -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:00:23 PM)

They're not midgets they're umpa loompas.
When people are up at Chimney Rock those little bastards are down in the parking lot breaking into and rifling through their vehicles.
They usually station one of them up near the rock with a walkie talkie as a lookout.
Theiving little bastards!

Four feet is quite tall. So you only remember the red vest or coat? Did you see arms and sleeves? Did you see buttons? What color was its skin? Why did you think it was male? Was it standing in grass or on rock? Could it have been an animal in an upright position? What was the shape of its face? Was it looking at you?

iwannapullurhair -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:04:37 PM)

It was strange in that I instantly knew it was a "man", but I could only recall the coat. There were no animals around. It was facing me. Since I wasn't expecting to see a little man and had no idea about the legend at the time, I think it was a real thing and not a trick of the eyes.

Ya know...I didn't understand a fucking word you said...but I have to tell you...as disjointed as your story is/was....you have an ability to paint with words.

Suleiman -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:24:26 PM)

Little people crop up quite often in native stories, pretty much acros the continent. Quite a few of the stories closely echo similar european legends about little people. As with the european stories, there are as many differences as similarities. In general, it's pretty impressive that you got to see one, even better that nothing bad happened to you because of it. Best of all would have been if you'd found an old flint arrowhead. That's pretty impressive good luck.

Rule -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:26:26 PM)

So this happened in about 1992.

Did you surprise it? Was it surprised by your appearance? Was it expecting you and was it willingly exposing itself to you that you might see it?

How much time passed between seeing it from the corner of your eye and doing the doubletake and looking at it directly? If you had not looked at it directly, would it have remained visible from the corner of your eye for a longer time?

At what distance from you was it? Was it at the same level or higher or lower on the slope?

Did anything else happen earlier during your ascent?

ExSteelAgain -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:28:11 PM)

I've been there a couple of times, but I'd never heard of the little people. Never saw one either. Interesting story in any case.

SusanofO -> RE: The Chimney Rock and little people (4/11/2007 6:34:49 PM)

I read that little people are actually "faeries" and meant to protect animals (pets, cattle, etc.) from danger. Dunno if it's true, but I read that is mostly their "job" and  thought it was interesting. I read they exist in other places, too, and mostly live inside the trunks of large trees (I am serious), but aren't usually visible to humans (as you stated).

Been to Chimney Rock, Roaring Gap, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain to name only a few in that area.  We have family there.  My mother in law is short. But very nice, and loves animals.

Well, there was something I left out. As I reached the top of this little rise in the trail, there was this little natural path that went by this tree on my right. It reminded me so much of this tree I used to love to walk by near a lake when I was a kid. I thought about walking that way and then realized, the cliff is that way. Then I saw the little man.

I don't know if it maliciously inserted the idea into my head to walk that way or could read my mind somehow and appeared to save my ass.

The creature or little man was about 5 to 7 feet away. Right at the same level of the dirt that I was on. It may have been on a rock, but I'm not certain at this point(maybe making it closer to 3-3.5 feet). It disappeared fast. I don't know how long it would have lingered, but I would think it would have not stayed for my Dad to see it.

When I returned a couple years ago, I had trouble locating the exact spot since the walkways were back.

When I returned the second time, I looked all over that place for any hint of the little people story. There is none at the rock in the shop or posted by the trails. You can find info on the internet after some looking and in old Encyclopedias.

I'm a guy. You can get to the Chimney Rock by heading out towards Asheville, North Carolina. The exit is called Batcave or something like that. Asheville also has the Biltmore Mansion which is like a European palace in America. The Stables of the Biltmore were also in Last of the Mohicans.

The place is relatively close to the Great Smokey Mountain Park and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. On the map, it is the West side of North Carolina.
