Working with customers every day, I amuse myself listening to peopel talk to one another, and paying attention to how they talk to me.  I find it very funny that some people answer what they think you say without really listening to you.  Either that or they have a kneejerk answer to what they hear, without actualy paying atention to the context.

For instance, when I hand someone thier photo order, often I'll say "Enjoy your photos".  Their answer is "You too."  I get plenty of laughs when I say "I already did."

Or when they first walk up, my question is "Whats your phone number?" since thats how we look up records.  They answer 'Fine thanks, and you?"

Please tell me I am not the only one who hears this all the time.

DV

You are not the only one...I hear it all the time too...people are so involved in their own "Stuff"...that they really dont even pay attention to you.

I've done it DV - when being seated at a table in a restaurant and the hostess says "enjoy your meal" it's hard not to say "you too".

FDR reportedly got so bored greeting people in reception lines that he'd say goofy things to see if anyone noticed. One evening, he told person after person, "I murdered my grandmother this morning." Guests smiled and replied, "Good evening, Mr. President." Finally an attentive listener actually heard him and responded diplomatically, "Well, I'm sure she had it coming."

Sometimes I do stuff like that...when I know I'm not being listened to, especially when I'm trying to get a point across, I'll throw in something really strange or off topic.

Once, I was having a conversation with this guy--well, what I thought was a conversation, as it turned out to be more one-sided than two--and I was really trying to be serious and explain my thoughts.  He didn't say anything for a while, so I continued...and then said "flaggersnort!"  And he was like, "Uh huh..."

I purposely toss stuff in when i am talking to managers to see if they are actually listening. Usualy, they arent. I do it to Angel too, but hes getting wise to it.
Luckily, autopilot can work to our advantage on ocacsion.  when someone cant think of what they are trying to say and use the wrong word or smething... we can usualy figure it out by what they should have said. But it can stil be damn funny

DV,

LOL We were joking about this at work the other night. So each of us came up with a weird question that we would ask each table instead of the usual " How's your _______" insert entree here. I asked how's your fahrfegnughen? Not a single person caught it.
I'm always a little pulled up short when I walk up to a table and ask what I can get them to drink or say hello and they answer some completely unrelated question.
