Status: offline 		Hello everyone. I thought I would make my first post on the forums a profound one so here it goes!!
Top Ramen, soup or not soup? I can't decide...
I eat it with a fork (like not soup).
I drink down the salty liquid posion when I'm done (like soup).
It come in a bowl (like soup), 
but so does most pasta (like not soup).

P.S. I don't eat this junk everyday!!!

      On a related note;  Miso soup?  Is that shit alive or what?  I get nervous about eating stuff that moves around in the bowl when I'm not stirring it...

Miso is fermented soybeans.

The paste is alive with all sorts of healthy living things if you havent boiled the hell out of it.

It is not swimming.  I imagine it is brownian motion in action.

Miso is better over all (and salty as well... yum, salty)

I made Miso soup the way Daddy taught me tonight, and everyone in my family loved it.... well they at least ate it, love might be too strong a word... I loved it.

i have a package of miso soup mix my Japanese sister in law gave me but now i forgot what to do with it and it's in Japanese

Status: offline 		i think it's all in how you prepare it... if you leave alot of water then it is soup; personally i drain the water before adding the flavor packet, so for me it's not soup

Status: offline 		Yes, I drain the water too.  And so do my kids.  So, here its not soup. 

But, if other people eat ramen like soup, it doesn't bother me and I understand that for many, eating ramen like soup is their thing.  It just doesn't work for me. :)

Status: offline 		I've never eaten ramen in my life.  If it comes in a little dehydrated brick and is loaded with sodium I think it can't have the name soup attached.
When I think of soup I think of something that is good for you.  Ramen is the opposite of that.

Miso on the other hand is supposed to be quite good for you, so it is soup.

I love the noodles, naturally I don't add the flavoring, I add cheese or spaghetti sauce to them or other spices.

Status: offline 		I would not call it soup. Personally I don't think it is really soup with no meat, but that is me. What does really count is that there are no veggies, no nuthin. Basically spices, which may actually be from the plant kingdom, do not really qualify  in my view.

I am old enough to remember Mrs Wiess, something else I refuse to eat.

Want some soup ? Boil a a chicken for 55 minutes, debone it, throw the bones back in and boil for another two hours. Strain the broth, which should almost qualify as stock by then. And if you want it my way, throw in celery, carrots, pearl onions. Peppercorns should've been in right after the straining. Salt should have been in from the start, unrefined organic sea salt of course. veggies go in last before the meat goes back in.

Now that's what I call soup.

The process is similar for beef, but put you beef in the soup pot and roast it in the oven until nicely browned, this enhances flavor and gives it a darker appearance. Of course afterward you throw the water in and boil. Veggies are about the same in my book as chicken, except you can add tomatoes if desired. In chicken some like turnips, but I would avoid using them in beef.

Thinking about it I do have to recognize certain soups without meat. Potato, cheese, spinach and tomato are examples. But I am carnivorous, so I am usually not impressed unless there is meat in it.

Now this is my opinion, even with meat, I consider soup to usually be a side dish, and that would hold doubly true when there is no meat. Even with meat, I try to eat a sandwich or some meat with it.

Incidentally, if you don't have a large family, you should still make alot of good soup, freeze it. Soup is one of the things that is totally suited for microwaving.

Now at my house I avoid using plastic in the microwave, and I try not to let the soup boil at the sides. Must heat it slowly. That'll bring it back alive, as long as there are not certain things in it, like any dairy, I mean milk or sourcream.

Anyway, it just accured to me there is something else that qualifies as soup, clam chowder. I'm sure there are many examples out ther.

Probably boil water or (my choice) soup broth of some sort.  Turn off the heat.  Add noodles.  When they start to soften, add miso soup packet.  Stir.  eat.

I boil water.  Put noodles in.  When they soften some I turn off the heat.

Throw in a bunch of veggies.  cooked shrimp.  tofu. etc.

Stir it a bit.

Stir in some miso paste from the health food store.

Serve.  Eat.
