missturbation -> They are showing what? (4/8/2007 4:52:02 PM)

Easter sunday and for most people easter eggs, easter bunny cuddly toys, special service at church and a celebration meal. Jesus (supposably) died for us and was ressurected over easter and what better adaptation of the story of JC to show than ............the passion of the christ!!
Now ok they showed this on channel 4 (the more daring of our tv channels supposably) and it was pretty late at night, but still ? I admittedly watched a bit of it as i had told my house mate how upsetting i had found it and i wanted him to see the torture and crucifiction scenes to see why. I personally think the film is very well done if not a little graphic, I won't watch it again because it upsets me too much.
My question though is this - was it really the best adaptation to show of JC's story especially over easter?

greetings,

no, but there are very few recent adaptations to show, aren't there? (i might be wrong.) history channel here was showing jesus of nazareth, but i think that's the only real "easter special" thing today.

i saw passion of the christ, and i personally felt it was powerful, but could have been just as powerful without all the graphic violence, which imho was gratuitous. the only channels i can see airing it here are hbo channels...mainly because of the violence. but, well, it's one adaptation, and it's recent, so it doesn't surprise me too much.

annabelle.

Yes it's as far as i'm aware the most recent but i was more thinking more along the lines of if it was the most appropriate to show on an easter sunday. I too found it very powerful and yes i agree it may have been a little on the too much violence side but i think possibly mel gibson was just trying to get across that when JC died for us the torture he went through would have been no picnic.

other than Jesus Christ SuperStar, I think it is one of the best movies. It really puts the trials and torment into perspective, but what I would really love to see is a rendition of after they found the tomb empty, the disciples hidding out, the comfort and wisdom of both Mary's, St. Pauls conversion and the appearence in front of the discples would be great for Easter. Mel Gibsons movie is more for the week from Palm sunday to Good friday (which I still don't understand how it got the name Good Friday) I can barely watch his movie, it is too much for me and I sob everytime I think of poor Mary watching her son, her baby, being tortured and murdered; I know as a mother I would not be able to stand idley by, even if it was the will of God, I don't have that grace.

today i watched Jesus of Nazareth (a miniseries from the 70s) however The Passion of the Christ is by far the most moving and expressive work of cinema depicting his betrayal, scourging and crucificxion imo.  yes i would admit certain scenes were too violent for children however i'm glad Mel didn't downplay what Jesus went through to take away the sins of the world.

Yes it was entertaining to watch some white guy get tortured and nailed to a cross....Who was he supposed to be?
