Ok i am watching the weirdest tv program on genetic modification on a farm.
We have had spider silk web making goats. Seriously it was extracted from their milk. Aim is to use it for something medical.
Then glow in the dark pigs for god knows what and glow in the dark fish to detect pollution.
Now we are looking at enviro pigs because apparently normal pigs have too much phosphorous in their shit which is bad for the environment. They have mixed some dna sequence from a mouse into pig embryos so they can digest their own phosphorous.
Its on an ad break now but i just thought id share the weird world of my tv viewing at 3.20am. Im sure there will be more to come. Weirdness aside im not sure i like all this messing with nature.

See, that's why we cut the TV off after football season. That show would give me nightmares. I watched one scientific show about growing human ears on a rat's back and then dreamed I had tupperware ears.

What's the name of the show? I like those types. It's probably downloadable somewhere, unless it's a first time airing.

I don't think it's wise for us to be fiddling yet with genetics, we are like 1st graders learning how to read and thinking we have the understanding of shakespeare. And eventually I'm 100 percent sure someone will go whoops. It's to fast for me.

Now we have a gelding that they are cloning because hes a champion race horse. For those that dont know apparently geldings cant breed. His clone is an exact copy like an identical twin.
Apparently a new twist on cloning is collecting the dna of animals in danger of becoming extinct and freezing them. The dna is then unfrozen and implanted into an egg and bam you have whatever species you were aiming for. Bangtang dna was put into a cow egg and implanted in a cows womb and a bangtang was born. (not sure bangtang is correct spelling).
Hee hee commercials again.

Mice and humans share over 90% of their genes. They are studying how genes work in mice so they can relate that to humans. They are doing this through sperm. They have alcoholic mice, apparently scientists believe alcoholism is genetic. They brain scan the alcoholic mice and find they have a gene missing which makes them jittery and that alcohol helps them feel calmer. So henceforth humans who are alcohlics may have the same gene missing. Obese mice who have a gene missing that means they can't recognise when they are full and just continue to eat. Pretty scary. They are even trying to find a gay gene, infidelity gene!!

There is an article in Scientific American last issue which dealt with this in depth.

The problem is that it is not one gene.  It is a bunch which work in concert.  Like one that lacks a gene to
turn off seeking brain chemistry for pleasure, along with the gene for receptiveness to alcohol metabolism, plus..

Put all these together, one ends up with an alcoholic.

First, I can not think of a problem science has solved, that did not create a bigger problem.  If anyone else can please educate me on it.  So along with the amazing cures that will come form this gentic nonsense, will come unimaginable nightmares.

On the bright side, I might be able to get a 6 inch tall pet elephant.  Imagine how cool that would be....

I have a feeling that some of this genetic tweaking is eventually going to bite us on the ass... and then some.

Hope I'm wrong though.

The wheel allowed the building of the chariot which allowed the Romans to...

You are right, every scientific insight is bad.

Or perhaps it is that bad people keep putting science to bad uses?

Well... if we're talking about taking the good with the bad here... I'm sort of hoping for the 12-inch penis, myself.

Sinergy, Sinergy.  Why don't you attack what I actually write.  You just like to attack people eh?  Kind of sad.  I never used any sort of value term like "good" or "bad".   Nor was I refering to scientific insights, but implemented solutions to problems.  I said that every problem solved by science creates a bigger problem.  And I asked for any I had not considered, because it seems like there must be one out there somewhere.  But you did nto provide one.  Just showed how you can not read very well.  Sure, the wheel made it much easier to schlep things around the farm, and led to the development of large unstustainable populations and war chariots.  Sure there will be some great benefits from screwing around with genetics, and they will be overshadowed by the unimaginable nightmare problems we have not even considered.  And no, I do not think the problem is with "bad" people, but with the limited ability of people to consider the effects of actions in a dynamic world.

I find it funny that the same people who get so upset that we are "experimenting with our atmosphere" and genetically modifying food, seem to be gung ho about experimenting with our gene code...

Just a little side "FYI"....a "gelding" is a castrated stallion, or male horse, so yes, he indeed cannot breed :)

Your post is a little unclear.  Are you suggesting that we should abandon science because everything that they do exposes or creates a greater problem?  Or that they should concentrate on making a six inch tall pet elephant for you to the exclusion of all other pursuits?

The development of the 6 inch tall pet elephant is undoubtedly the priority.

Kind of like a trip to the moon - there's bound to be all sorts of spin offs.

But most importantly, I can have a 6 inch tall pet elephant.

thomposn,   It would not be unclear if you had any ability to comprehend what you read.  I did not sugest anything, I asked a question.  You have no answer so need to attack.  And you misspelled your own name......

Honestly how can you get from me saying,"On the bright side, I might be able to get a 6 inch tall pet elephant."  to "that they should concentrate on making a six inch tall pet elephant for you(me) to the exclusion of all other pursuits?"

sad.
