Yes, that might be true, but those countries does not go under my definition of civilized (and by this, I do NOT mean that all Muslin countries are not civilized - just had to make that clear).

yenlui, that was clear as mud! Muslim countries are not civilized and by that you don't mean all Muslim countries are not civilized?????

Confused.

yenlui -> RE: New/Old Styles (4/5/2007 1:47:34 PM)

Forgive me. What I was trying to say is: a country where one human can be legally owned by another human does not go under my definition as civilized. There are countries where the majority of people are Muslim and there's still no ways to legally own another human there (in those countries).

Being a "Muslim country" in itself does not qualify to being "not civilized".

quote:

A slave by definition had no honor or dignity. The essence of being a slave was the inability to protect one's body. While every citizen had the right to trial and appeal before they suffered physical punishment, a slave was defined by the absence of such a right and expectation. An owner could beat and abuse slaves (and it could not legally be considered assault) and compel sex from slaves of either sex (and it could not be considered rape). [Romans did not deal well with the notion that female citizens slept with male slaves, however.] If someone had sex with a slave without the owner's permission, however, the owner could sue that person for trespass.

I can see this speaks to many, and I appreciate that.
It doesn't speak to me for one simple part that is in bold (if I did that right). If someone else were to have sex with me without permission, I certainly would consider it a crime against me.

Sounds like heaven to me.  Too bad we cant inact something like that here in the states........

i actually like the bolded part.  In essence and reality - if some one were to have sex with me with out my Master's permission - i have this really odd idea that he would have a bigger problem with it then me.  Not that i would be okay with it, but in terms of reaction - i know his reaction would be about triple of mine.  In a way, it is a reality of my life.  I enjoy him having that authority and it would be nice if he had a more legal status to do so.

But then - of course - in those times.  One can not rape a slave.  So technically sex with a slave outside of an owners persmission wasnt rape and would not hold the same connotations as it would today.  For them, i reckon it would just be use and nothing to get all excited about.

Thought it was something like that. Thanks for clarifying.

Hello. =)

I think that when we look at old examples of institutionalized sl very, we all tend to cherry pick what applies to us ( or what makes us horny) and conveniently forget the rest, lol.

While the quote "could" apply to the nature of some O/s dynamics here... there are too many aspects of legal slavery that are very much counter to WIITWD.

~the legal right to kill a slave
~ forced breeding
~ the selling of slave's children

I know some people like to point out that not all slaves were treated so horribly in the past. But I bet that for every Tito, there were 2 miserable, worked to death, *expendable* slaves whose lives meant literally nothing to their owners. That was pretty much the whole point of owning slaves.. to have free, expendable labor.

I dunno... I try not to romanticize actual slavery too much. ;)

Honor and dignity are subjective here just like everywhere. Many view suicide as dishonorable and undignified, nevertheless one of the most complex and rigid honor systems in our world held suicide as the utmost honorable act one could do.

All this talk of Rome and slavery reminds me of the HBO TV show entitled "Rome". I just recently got into watching it so I missed the whole 1st season. However, I did watch the last few episodes of this season. Until I found the show "Rome" my TV had not even been turned on since last July as I do not watch a lot of TV. I was at a friend's house one Sunday night and she turned the show on. It intrigued me so I started watching.

In that show, and they are suppose to be staying very true to history, Marc Antony committed suicide when he "thought" Cleopatra had done the same. When Cleopatra brought the children to view his body, she said to them: " This is how nobility dies." Later on she committed suicide herself.

One of the most amusing parts, if you can find death amusing, was when Pullo went to kill Cicero and his slave tried to intervene and Cicero mades some comment about not being a fool. The slave clearly loved his Master and would have died for him.

I also  found to be fascinating was that you could attend orgies to your heart's content but if you cheated on your spouse, you were a whore in the eyes of the citizens of Rome.

Another thing that got my attention was when Octavian told his bride to be, "I will whip you because it brings me sexual pleasure."

All in all it was and is a most interesting show.

Aw, man... that show was so hot, lol.

I was so pissed they canceled it!

OsideGirl -> RE: New/Old Styles (4/6/2007 4:34:27 PM)

My personal opinion is that consentual slavery is an oxymoron. Slavery is defined as a nonconsentual act.
quote:

Slavery, bondage, servitude refer to involuntary subjection to another or others.

I believe that calling ourselves slaves, belittles and demeans what those forced into slavery actually go through in their lives.

My personal belief is that consentual slavery in the D/s term is a fallacy. I believe that we can consentually submit our wills to someone else. But, that is not the same as slavery.

You don't have to like my opinion and you don't have to agree with my opinion. Please don't send me a million emails telling me I'm wrong. I know it's an unpopular stand in the D/s community. But, it's what I believe. If what you do works for you, more power to you.

That thought's been occurring to me a lot today.

Speculator -> RE: New/Old Styles (6/23/2008 3:52:08 PM)

Looking in the archives, I came across this and had to respond.  1. Roman slavery is something I have studied quite a bit, from legal and moral and social viewpoints.  2. Any non-citizen could be punished by a Roman magistrate without recourse to any higher laws.  3. Slaves are vauable property, and many were born to slavery, or voluntarily became slaves to better their life situations. I am willing to discuss Roman slavery and related subjects, from many viewpoints.
