Hello All,
I'm reading this play right now and its about a man who adopts this dog. The dog is played by a "pert, sexy woman". It has an extremely BDSM air about it. At one point it is even suggested that the dog be spanked. I thought it was funny that I was probably the only one in my whole class who picked up on it.

So this is not a topic about Sylvia Saint? [:-]

OK, on a more serioius note, Sarah Jessica Parker acted in the play... new facet to her character?

*goes looking for more Gurney stuff*

It's a tremendously funny play--I'm glad to hear that it's classroom reading!

I think the erotic overtones are essential to the play. Perhaps they are less present when reading to read than they are in performance. The power imbalance in the play is pretty obvious, too--dogs and their natural hierarchy, dogs as owned by humans, etc. Your interesting contribution is to put the two together--you've observed the erotic quality of power--and that's something that didn't come through at all in my experience with the play. It might be interesting to read it that way. In other words, instead of presenting eroticism and power as distinct themes in the play, one could present them as complementary and indeed, present a causal relationship (power imbalance results in eroticism). Interesting thoughts!

I saw "Sylvia" a number of years ago, at one of the first performances done of the play- and it was wonderful. I agree that it does have some interesting points about power and relationships. I also must say that it was engaging and really fun to see, too!
I don't know if it could be fully related to kink (I cannot speak for the lifestyle of the author, etc.), but when viewed with the knowledge of power exchange and puppy play, it does add an "extra-special" dimension to the goings-on-stage.

Wait, wasn't there something on Broadway a few years back like this? It was a revival of an older play, I thought it was called "The Goat" or something but I remember the goat's name was Sylvia. I'm confused but I'm going to go look it up.

Ok, just looked it up and the play I was thinking of was "The Goat or Who is Sylvia?" By Edward Albee. It opened in 2002. I think I was wrong about the revival part, seems it was the first opening. Anyway, does this have anything to do with the same play?

Nope, nothing to do with a goat- the play is simply called "Sylvia", and it is about a man and his female dog, as portrayed by a woman in the production and script.
It also opened around the same time, though, if my memory serves me correctly.
