outlier -> Hexagon shape at Saturn's Pole puzzles JPL (3/28/2007 5:21:45 PM)

Hello All,

I saw this information today about this formation around one
pole of Saturn.  A hexagon shape.  Interesting video at the JPL site.

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2007-034

I would be interested in your thoughts, conjectures, etc.

Send some eggheads to take a look. What's the fucking problem?

domiguy -> RE: Hexagon shape at Saturn's Pole puzzles JPL (3/28/2007 5:53:56 PM)

Has NASA tried to ask it a question?....Appears to be the largest "Magic Eight Ball" in the universe.....Oh Magic Saturn Ball...Will I ever find "True love?"

patiently awaiting reply.....Damn need to go to planetarium to rent telescope time....Where's that fucking Miss Cleo when you need her?

stef -> RE: Hexagon shape at Saturn's Pole puzzles JPL (3/28/2007 6:01:42 PM)

If it is a giant Magic 8-Ball, Mattel will probably have it shut down like they did with all the Magic 8-Ball websites.  Heartless bastards.

Didnt you know its actually Jesus' 8 ball?  Hes already got the market cornered in shrouds...

farglebargle -> RE: 8 balls. (3/28/2007 6:05:10 PM)

damnit, there's no way to protect the formatting, but here is a source code to a perfectly effective magic 8 ball.

First google hit, btw.

( Btw, it LOOKS like an 8 ball before HTML space folding ( and cm won't take a <pre> tag. )

And they say that you can't actually "land" on Jupiter.
It's a planet that is made up entirely of gases.

outlier -> RE: Hexagon shape at Saturn's Pole puzzles JPL (3/28/2007 6:07:06 PM)

stef,

There may be an out.  Since this is a hexagon,
it could claim to be a magic 6 ball.   Besides
who is Mattel going to get to serve papers on Saturn?

They would find a way.  Never underestimate a corporate lawyer's zeal to bring someone into court.

Someone on another board mentioned seeing a similar shape once in some pics of I believe it was hurricanes; most (centers) were circular but one had a bit of this form. Another commented that this shape resembles crystalline formations in basalts which have cooled quickly.

Intriguing mystery, nifty pic.

Uh, open the pod bay doors, Hal.

My God, it's full of stars.

I just bought a Magic 8 Ball at Target the other day.
Ask me a question and the Magic 8 Ball will answer.

Can you send
a pic of you mounting The Magic 8 Ball?

I have tried this before will try once again since both of you are on the same thread....everytime I see the pic on Stef's profile I always think she is preparing to go down on Aileen....IT'S A JOKE!!!!!

Anywhooo.....Oh Magic 8 Ball that is rubbing against Aileens clit.....Will I find true love?

popeye1250 -> RE: Hexagon shape at Saturn's Pole puzzles JPL (3/28/2007 7:24:19 PM)

LOL. "Try again buddy."
Yes, aren't those formations on the coast in N. Ireland hexagons too?
On the Giant's causeway, I haven't been there since 2000 but I think they're hexagon shaped.

formation around one pole of Saturn. A hexagon shape.

That is odd. Also note that two more such hexagonal rings are nested inside the other. Can it be that there are even larger rings surrounding them that we cannot any longer recognize as hexagonal because of their size? Like for example the atmospheric bands of Saturn?

Such hexagonal shapes are typical of convection cells, so one possible hypothesis is that Saturn is boiling.

A convection cell on its own in theory would be perfectly circular. However, they are always bordered by other convections cells and in such cases the pressures exerted by each of them result in the hexagonal shapes, where the pressure is equalized. Such planes and angles and equalization of pressures will also be seen in soap bubbles that a child may blow.

Some principle, therefore, is producing pressure at the north pole of Saturn. The surrounding air apparently has no way out and therefore, being compressed, pushes back and consequently automatically partial pressure cells are formed around the central convection cell, causing that central convection cell to assume the hexagonal shape.

At the south pole it is summer and a large hurricane has formed. It may be that this hurricane has annihilated a similar hexagonal structure at the south pole and that it will return once winter sets in at the south pole.

So what is causing this nested convection cell at the poles? I would guess the high density of magnetic field lines at the magnetic poles - if those magnetic poles coincide with the geographic poles.

Oh silly Rule...Looks like all that fancy book learnin only goes so far...We have established that it is the Magic 8 Ball of planets...It's kinda cool!...Go ahead ask it a question!!!

Fargle: I guess I'm just showing off a little but that script you provided would only compile/run a Unix based machine. I think. Did you know that. Do you agree ?

The gravity of Jupiter, should you end up hitting something to land on, is about 2.6 times Earth's gravity.

Jupiter is just dense enough to sink if you stuck it in a bathtub filled with water, but Saturn would float.

Nope.

Perl isn't limited to *nix machines.  Both Windows and MacOS can run Perl scripts if they have the right packages installed.
