Fargle: I guess I'm just showing off a little but that script you provided would only compile/run a Unix based machine. I think. Did you know that. Do you agree ?

#!/usr/bin/perl is only required by unix shells. The script, in it's entirety should run unmodified on any platform sporting a Perl interpreter.

I belive ActiveState's ActivePerl is the standard for wi[n|mp]tel platforms.

FWIW: REAL Computers ship with a Perl interpreter already installed into the base distribution.

Those are gorgeous photos!  As to what causes such a
pattern, I have not a clue.  So we should send a probe.
As to what kind of probe, I will leave that to your
demented imaginations!  [8D]

I hate it when Saturn sends me a message saying I will submit....Some planets!

Would you rather that message came from Uranus?

'Henry Bènard in 1900 and Lord Rayleigh in 1916 studied convection patterns developing in a layer of fluid heated from below. These are marked by the appearance of hexagonal cells as the liquid rises from the bottom of the layer in the centre and falls near the wall of each cell. Subsequent studies showed that Bènard’s patterns were actually driven from the top by surface tension and not from below due to unstable thermal states and that the same pattern of convection is observed when a fluid is heated from the top and cooled from below or when heated in the absence of gravity.'

As Rule pointed out, these patterns relate to bubble geometry and are typical of convection cells. They even exist in the earth’s mantle. We don’t see large scale ones in our atmosphere owing to the irregularity of the earth’s surface and the relatively energetic activity of air and ocean currents. We do see small hexagonal features in clouds on occasion and other ordered arrangements too.

Order can arise from chaos.

Saturn’s atmosphere sits on a liquid layer and is not subject to surface disruptions. It will be interesting to see if the south pole reacts similarly in the depths of winter, when polar hurricane season ends. But as winter lasts fifteen years on Saturn I don’t know if there will be any instruments in the area to make that observation.

I don't know if this is relevent to the thread but the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland is hexagonal and made from lava.

I think it's a rather different process, MC, having to do with the way the magma cooled, rather than how it rose to the surface. But it does show how pervasive the hexagonal shape is in nature, at all scales and with both inorganic and organic systems.

I would be interested in your thoughts, conjectures, etc.

Isn't it obvious?  It's a hive for a giant space bee.  [;)]

Especially if it had just been plutoed.

lol, I hope it is a new interstellar intergallactic meme for a blowjob.

I will volunteer,

Everybody open the trunk of the car, and get back, I will take care of it.
