I was working in my store last night, and the manager caught a person shop lifting.  The manager let the person go when she paid for a product, but it really opened my eyes to a huge problem we have in retail today.
It is a crying shame that people go into stores and shop lift.  Let me be the first to say, it is steeling, and I would have called the police.  Her mother was there with them, and that is the only reason they got off. The manager had the mother straighten it out, or they would have been in jail.

may not have learned anything this time, but next time when they have a trip to the jail and  they go to court and have to pay a much larger amount than the products worth, they'll learn.

Question is - would you be concerned as to why they had taken something, or called the police anyway, as in  - fuck'em, they are guilty anyway?

The biggest problem in retail today as far as shoplifters go are the employee's.  Generally they walk out with much more than any customer ever will.
If you shoplift a grocery store, chances are you won't go to jail.  Only because they have a softer heart when you are stealing for food.
Shoplift another chain and more than likely it will be jail as well as being banned from the entire chain for life.
They do actually put your photo up in every security room there is through out the chain.
They do actually tell the employees to look at the faces in the photo's.

With today's security if you have a good person working for you, no one can get away with stealing anything.

Just a few tidbits.

Dont see how shoplififting can be illegal, if its a woman that does it then the man in her life is a bastard, if its a man than his parents treated him wrong , if its a youngster of either sex they need to be caught at least 20 times before they are considered to be breaking the law. and on top of that shopowners are partially responsible because they place goods where someone can steal them.

Anybody want to buy a video recorder I just happen to have. Going very cheap.

I've worked in Loss Prevention for a now defunct chain store.....the amount of theft from both the patrons and employees would boggle your mind!  The more they steal, the more it costs consumers.  And there are people who make a living off of stealing from stores.....I finally nailed a woman who'd walk out with about $200 of merchandise at a pop, and she'd hit two or three of our stores every week!  She'd come back and get money for the items as a return.  This was a woman who used her 2 year old child as an excuse to get out of prosecution when I finally had her arrested.  I had mothers bring in their 5 year olds when they lifted a candy bar, and make them apologize to both me and the store manager......yay Mom!!!  The poor kid would be crying, and while I'd want to tell the poor thing it was okay, mom was doing it to show the child it WASN'T okay.  And then there were the older kids that when I told them I was going to page Mom to my office, they told me they'd rather go to the police department.....if it wasn't a lot of merchandise they stole, I'd let Mom handle it....she'd make a much bigger impression on the kid than any cop could!  But I had absolutely NO problem whatsoever turning anyone over to the police....theft is theft, and shoplifting is probably one of the major reasons that prices are so high in retail.  The store has to make money somehow.  And employees aren't any better...they tend to steal the higher ticket items, usually sneaking them out the back door when no one's looking....I'm talking electronics, clothing, sporting goods.....so yeah, I'm definitely turning them over to the cops.  Call me a hard-ass, but I've never taken anything without paying for it, I bust my ass working to pay for the things that I want, and knowing people are getting the same things for free really burns my ass!

OK, 'nuf said......off the soapbox now!

You are on a good soap box.  People do not realize how much it is costing the consumer.
For the other remarks here, we have everything on video tape in the store.  Everything is taped from me counting money to the manager counting money, and it goes back to the home office.
I don't know if the manager will let this crowd back in the store.
I found more items tonight where the product had disappeared, and the package box was left empty.
Jail it needs to be.
Then when we did not have suspicious pepople in the store, we had unruly kids tearing down the store.  It takes a lot of work to keep a store straight.  I will tell a kid no.

Rolls my eyes.

We get it al the time.  And we are fairly convinced part of it is done for the thrill of getting away with something. The things that are taken are not necessities. Things like laxatives, diet pills and cold medicine.  There are the drug dealers and cookers who steel ingredients, and then there are aso the ones with addictions and not the money t support them.  Our store has everything wth a black market value locked up.
Hell I have to make sure I ring people upback in the photo department for their pictures or ese we lose a to of them to "walk outs" since there is no security tags on them.

Question: Does lube have a black market value? One of the pharms where Daddy lives has KY locked up. I had never seen that at any other pharmacy

Lube is locked up because people would rather steal it than live through the humiliation of purchasing it through the register.
If the store personell cannot watch the patrons some stores would rather lock something up than lose it time after time.
There is something to be said for hiring a good security outfit.  I think it is absolute necessity in todays day and age.  They should be the highest paid in the store if trustworthy.

Ah, my days in retail.  I remember keeping an eye on shoplifters until security could get to their perch.  All employees are involved in loss prevention, when people steal you pay more money for things, it is that simple.  Don't talk about write-offs, stores do not like unknown shrinkage that is found at the time of inventory.  The store where I worked is a major retailer and had a policy of prosecution.  A boring day could be brightened by the local police escorting thiefs out, in handcuffs.  Perhaps those people have a kink for public humiliation.

Like I said, I have never seen this at any other store but this one. It makes it 10 times more embarassing to buy it when one has to page someone with a key to open that case. I am past getting humiliated over such things at my old age, but I would rather buy it somewhere that does not have it locked up.

Employees steal, customers steal, hey it's the American way.
It will only get worse. Of course worse is better.

I'm probably going to get stick for this but i'm going to say it anyway. I've been burgled 4 times now and it is the most horrendous feeling knowing someone has been through your possessions, invading your space and stolen things which are personal etc.
Stealing from a store though illegal and wrong is much better than burgling a house. The store is much better covered for the loss and it is far less personal. I'm certainly not saying it is right but of two wrongs its the better.

I'm just the opposite!
If I buy some condoms or lube I'll take them to the counter with the nicest looking checkout girl!
"You're out of the LARGE size, eh?"
Or; "Do you use KY? Is it better than the other lubes?"
"Can it be used for ANAL?"
Funny as hell some of the looks on their faces!

Personally I am the same way.  We have a restaurant here in town called the "back door"  you should see the looks on their faces when I always call them the butt plug.
Can't help it if thats what I think of when I hear the back door.

Anyway, I've taught year's of loss prevention.  Unfortunately a lot of people haven't grown up yet.
You know they make meth out of titanium razor blades?  That's why those are locked up.
No idea, if you need the titanium to heat it or what but I know they use it in the cooking somehow.

Sub, lol at "Buttplug."
They use titanium razors to make dope?
Man, I'm glad I never got involved with dope!

You all are hearing it from me.  You are stealing if you are shoplifting from a store.

The reason your privacy is being invaded is because this generation is slowly losing its grips on what is wrong and what is right.  It is a sad thing to watch happen.

MissSCD
