Do you think that there is a double standard in American society regarding the amount of violence and the amount of sex in popular entertainment and the media in general?

The "glamourisation" and "sexualisation" by the US "entertainment" industry of mindless violence is disgraceful. It reveals the clear necessity for censorship. Just watched the 1940's film Laura where every single scene the glamourous lead actresses and actors lit up a cigarette. That doesn't happen now duz it, neva watching modern films I dont know for sure. Assumng it doesn't ,then do you have to wait for something to become unfashionable before censorship can be applied ?

Without a shred of doubt V. Its something I notice a lot because of course we see all the US films and many US TV shows alongside our British ones. British shows and films tend to have little problem with sexy scenes or violence as long as its in the context of the story (ie not gratuitous), whilst the US equivalents are full of gratuitous violence but shy away from anything remotely sexual. The fuss when (Janet?) Jackson's boob fell out was so funny to me. The only way to get the same reaction in the UK would be if she had done a full frontal naked split! Meanwhile the US doesnt seem at all fazed or even impressed by the sight of blood and gore spraying about the place in a machine gun battle. E

Oh yeah, there is a huge double standard. And weird criteria. Like.. why did " The Hills Have Eyes" get an R rating, with all that nastiness, and a movie like " Eyes Wide Shut" gets the sexier scenes cut out to get an R rating? Didn't " Boogie Nights" cause more fuss then "Saw" ever did? I could be wrong, but it certainly seems that way. But we ARE talking about a nation that went all apeshit over Janet Jackson's nipple. A nipple!

Our culture is so repressed and confused about sexuality, it doesn't need any further qualifiers like "sex and violence" or "sex and health" to distinguish it.

Public television has become too over the top for me. I had to get satellite and specifically cartoon network for my UMs. I don’t let them watch the news and had a few go-rounds with a teacher or two over it. One class my oldest is in has to write a weekly report on what they watch on the news and I told the teacher she is more than welcome to pick any science discovery she would like an essay, thesis, or broad fiction “what if” book in lieu of a news report. After her adamant refusal I had a chat with the principal and we made a happy lil accord. Now he writes his papers of science channel or what he and I mine off the net. There job is to be happy go lucky kids and I find little or nothing on the news or public television that will contribute to that. If I manage to let them be “kids” until their 15 (I am shooting for 20) and they live to be 100 that is only 15% of their lives in the care free world of youthful wonder.
