I would think alot would depend on what type of brand.

If it is just a symbol - I think that is the couple.

If it is the initials or name of the Dom/me - I would want to make sure it is one that both feel would be life long.

From personal experience - having the brand of another's mans name on yourself AFTER a relationship has ended and a new one has begun - well it can create some tension in a new relationship.

I was very interested in brandings until, as part of my research, I attended one.  The reality can be quite ugly. It smells, first off. You're cooking a bit of human flesh. That in itself is something you don't know how you'll react to until you've smelled it. Then there is the reaction of the person being branded. Yeah.. um.. after that, branding is not for me!

I can only say that when we did the branding there was no smell of flesh (nor at any of the other brandings I've seen).  As for reaction I had a much more violent reaction to my outer labia piercing than my branding.  The outer labia piercing hurt like nothing I've never felt before (or after).

Hmm, I'm not sure what kind of branding you attended, but at the one we held here recently, the reactions from the people being branded was very impressive.  In fact, one man mentioned that it was the most intense "subspace" he'd ever experienced.

i have read up a bit on the topic, and i think that pepole react a bit differently, some are lucky and the heat burn the nerves causesing no pain, or one end up in subspace at one, others suffer through it. i am not looking forward to Master branding me.

Wildfleurs, I found the presentation of your branding that you posted awhile back to be most fascinating. I have asked my Master for a branding such as that but he won't do it.  He says it's just not something he is comfortable with at this time. 

He did want me permanently marked for him, however, and designed an insignia which was tatood on my right flank.  He considers that my brand.  As for how long, I had belonged to him for 13 months, and had been collared by him for 9 months before I was marked.  He wanted it on me sooner than that (2 months into owning me, 4 months into knowing me - which surprised even him) but chose to wait.

I have great respect for those slaves who have undergone the branding iron. Pain-wimp that I am, perhaps he will change his mind some day and allow me to go through that for him.  Absent that, I cherish his marking on me, as I know what a big deal that was for him to do.

I suspect what you are describing is a Heat Brand... Cold Brand and Electrical Brand will be different

I wish I could... but my knowledge came from a guy that likes to do that sort of thing.  But, if you do some searches you should find some things.  But.. this is a type of play that I would want to talk to someone first hand.. and not go by what you read here.

I have witnessed the Electrical Branding.  In fact a girl that use to be with me had a Electrical Branding done on her.  The branding lasted about 1 year and then it began to fade.  Within two years it wasn't visiable.  Alandra also and a small test Branding done.  She still as the mark and that is about 4 years ago and it as fresh looking as the it was then (healed of course) 

There was very little smell during the branding. it was rather pleasant actually.  But, each person is going to be different.. one needs to be prepared for getting results less that expected or more.. and not it a good way either.

I think whats important is that you cherish his mark, whatever it is.  Most of the pain of the brand at the moment is more mental, it doesn't actually hurt that much (its the healing that hurts).  And I really identify as a complete pain wuss!

But to me it was more about going down a path in many ways.  There was the path I went down over around four years to get to the point of craving and begging for the brand.  And then the path of having it heal and watching my skin scab, and then some layers of skin not be there, and then heal and then emboss all in the shape of his inital was really unexpected and bonding.
