Maybe the ethics committee should start a little closer to home for Ms. Pelosi
GOP hits Pelosi's 'hypocrisy' on wage bill
By Charles Hurt
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
January 12, 2007

House Republicans yesterday declared "something fishy" about the major tuna company in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district being exempted from the minimum-wage increase that Democrats approved this week.
"I am shocked," said Rep. Eric Cantor, Virginia Republican and his party's chief deputy whip, noting that Mrs. Pelosi campaigned heavily on promises of honest government. "Now we find out that she is exempting hometown companies from minimum wage. This is exactly the hypocrisy and double talk that we have come to expect from the Democrats."
On Wednesday, the House voted to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 per hour.
The bill also extends for the first time the federal minimum wage to the U.S. territory of the Northern Mariana Islands. However, it exempts American Samoa, another Pacific island territory that would become the only U.S. territory not subject to federal minimum-wage laws.
One of the biggest opponents of the federal minimum wage in Samoa is StarKist Tuna, which owns one of the two packing plants that together employ more than 5,000 Samoans, or nearly 75 percent of the island's work force. StarKist's parent company, Del Monte Corp., has headquarters in San Francisco, which is represented by Mrs. Pelosi. The other plant belongs to California-based Chicken of the Sea.
"There's something fishy going on here," said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry, North Carolina Republican.
During the House debate yesterday on stem-cell research, Mr. McHenry raised a parliamentary inquiry as to whether an amendment could be offered that would exempt American Samoa from stem-cell research, "just as it was for the minimum-wage bill."
A clearly perturbed Rep. Barney Frank, the Massachusetts Democrat who was presiding, cut off Mr. McHenry and shouted, "No, it would not be."
"So, the chair is saying I may not offer an amendment exempting American Samoa?" Mr. McHenry pressed.
"The gentleman is making a speech and will sustain," Mr. Frank shouted as he slammed his large wooden gavel against the rostrum.
Some Republicans who voted in favor of the minimum-wage bill were particularly irritated to learn yesterday -- after their vote -- that the legislation did not include American Samoa.
"I was troubled to learn of this exemption," said Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, Illinois Republican. "My intention was to raise the minimum wage for everyone. We shouldn't permit any special favors or exemptions that are not widely discussed in Congress. This is the problem with rushing legislation through without full debate."
A spokeswoman for Mrs. Pelosi said Wednesday that the speaker has not been lobbied in any way by StarKist or Del Monte.

I see some people are more equal than others...

Nice video but the guy getting flustered was Barney, good tapdance though.

farglebargle -> RE: Ethics from Nancy,, wait a second (3/15/2007 8:20:36 PM)

If he was getting flustered it was due to the idiot who asked, "How can I determine if this is in the bill", to which Barney responded, "The gentleman could READ the bill".

Just proved that the frat-boy-fortunate-sons should have paid closer attention to those classes in basic procedure.

Now, since I don't know you I will give you my basic intellectual integrity test.  First off, had you even heard of the minium wage being applied to territories like this?  Of course you did and this is why you are outraged.  I would also assume you were furious that John Doolittle (paid for by Abramohf) pushed to have products that were funneled through the Northern Mariana Island were allowed to be sold as "made in the USA" despite not having ANY US labor laws apply?  Just point me to the posts you bemoaning this and I won't even bring up the forced abortion and the massive sex trade that goes on there and I will put you in the "Republican's with great integrity" file I keep.

And quite frankly, it stinks but compared to the real issues facing America doesn't seem to be anything but smoke and mirrors.

luckydog1 -> RE: Ethics from Nancy,, wait a second (3/16/2007 1:51:01 AM)

These territories were never under min wage laws.  Not under Clinton or Carter or the Democratic House that ruled for over 40 unbroken years.  I agree they should be, but why exempt Samoa?  Do you think life in a Samoan tuna factory is great?  How does this not qualify as a "real issue"?

Maybe using the clip of Kerry calling the Administration liars was a bad choice with the VP's CoS in prison, the AG's CoS GOING to Prison, and the AG maybe going to Prison too, because of their inability to be forthcoming.

Lucky,

Explain to me how upping the min wage in somoa is a real issue, meaning one of major import affecting the future of this country.  Since we face a LOT of those, I am curious why you feel this is on the same level

Simply micheal.  I did not give a level of importance, I said it was a real isue.  The Democratic leadership that YOU support thinks it is such an important issue that they have already spent time on it.  Why are they dealing with stuff like min wage laws when there are bigger problems?  I dont know, you voted for and support them.  Ask Pelosi and Reid why this is such an important issue.  Now, given it is a fact that the Dems think this is an important issue, I see nothing wrong in asking why was Samoa exempted.  The answer is obviously because Pelosi is Corrupt, and people in her district stand to make a lot of money off of that exemption.   I am sure Pelosi is laughing that you would jump to defend her corruption.
