KaramelGoddess -> Tens Units...Advice? (3/14/2007 1:34:24 PM)

Good day all,
I have recently begun dating a chiropractor who has access to a tens unit.  I have never seen this device before, but I have heard mention of it used in play.

How is a tens unit used and what are the safety precautions one has to take when using it?

I would love any feedback from those more experienced in using one...stories, ideas...anything helpful!

With kind regard,
~Kara

Never Never across the heart.

Start with the lowest setting and progress slowly, watching the reactions of Your sub/slave carefully. If the person you are using it on has any heart problems, don't use it on them.
Just be careful and safe. Firsthand experience, I can tell You they are wonderful; on the receiving end. [:)].

I have a lot of experience with the PES box, which is similar, 'I think'.  I'll let others who might have seen both denote any differences.

I don't do anything above the waist, as all of the 'attachments' are designed for genitalia.

I'm cautious with someone who hasn't experienced it before, but it's a lot of fun.

I have a TENS unit.  It was given to me when I injured my back and knee.  I was told it's very important to not use it near the neck or heart or head.  I have used it on my shoulder once, on a low setting, but mostly on my lower back.  It's nice if used at a reasonable setting on muscles, but if you use it on a fatty area it buzzes and stings and is not at all fun.  I've seen sites that sell toys deliberately designed to be used with a TENS unit, plugs and things, but haven't tried them.

Buy a copy of "Juice" it is about electrical play

the only time i've ever had a tens unit used on me was in a chiro's office, so i'm guessing that as a chiro, your partner (or someone he works with) would be able to give you more info on how it can be safely used. i would recommend having him use it on your back first just so you can get the feel of it before you use it for any bdsm play.

As a healthcare professional who uses TENS, I don't have much to add...just
pulling together all the safety precautions have been given on here.
*** READ THE BOOK THAT COMES WITH THE UNIT***
1.  Never set the pads around the heart.

2.  Never set the pads around the head (why would you want to anyway???  but I digress)

3.  Never use the pads on the face (yeah, it IS part of the head but some people tend to forget that)

***READ THE BOOK THAT COMES WITH THE UNIT

4.  Make sure the batteries are fresh each time you use it and that the pads are "sticking" properly (I'd also stay away from the sponge-type pads...besides being messy...I am not wild about the idea of wet and electricity and a sadistic dominant and a willing sub all in one place at the same time.  ~s~)

5.  Remember that most TENS units have two different channels and can be used at varying frequencies and speeds.  One channel's frequency and intensity may be great for you and the other channel's properties may make you go "OW" in a bad way.

6.  Never place the pads over an open lesion of any sort or any sort of skin eruption (aka pimple, zit, etc.)

***READ THE BOOK THAT COMES WITH THE UNIT***

HEAVY HEAVY  Disclaimer:  The above is NOT...I repeat, NOT... given as health advice NOR should it  be construed as any sort of advice regarding any ...and I do mean ANY... health condition.
The advice is given solely as a means of education about SAFETY CONCERNS and SAFETY SUGGESTIONS only!!!

One of the ways you can use a TENS unit in play is, I am told, exactly the same as the way it's used in therapy. You put the pads on large muscles. Your chiropractor will be a great source of advice on this form of play.

Your chiropractor may not be so useful when it comes to genital play--the "other" use for TENS. You might put pads on the base of a man's penis and just below the head of the penis, so a circuit is completed along the shaft. Behind the scrotum is another place. If you have clip electrodes, they concentrate the sensation more, and they are especially useful for genital play on a woman's clitoral hood or labia. If you're experienced with impact play, you might think of the pads as "thuddy" and the clips as "stingy." Testing the electrodes on the web between thumb and index finger works well. If the unit has different "settings," essentially different wave patterns, you can cause varied sensations. You should familiarize yourself with the sensation patterns so you can use them most effectively.

There are also insertable electrodes, and in my experience, people have higher thresholds and tolerances for insertables than for clips or pads. Some insertables are bipolar, meaning that they complete a circuit all by themselves, and others are unipolar, meaning that you need to put another insertable, a pad, or a clip somewhere nearby to complete the circuit. Using just one "half" of a circuit doesn't work.

Safety issues: don't complete a circuit across the chest, or across the head. The tongue is possible, but it's not a great place to start, and you should have some idea of how electricity works before you do that. Don't use it at all on someone with a pacemaker.

Kara, do you have more specific questions? If so, and if you follow up on this thread and don't get an answer, please feel free to email me. I'm not an expert, but I use my TENS unit a lot, and I'm enthusiastic about others using electricity in SM.

I just ove my tens unit....

It amuses me... on a man you can watch tings go up and down without any touching if you put it on pulse....as far as for me...i like to have two people complete the cucuit together that is very interesting sensation play...and well the more things heat up and fluids fly the more the cuicuit is finished!

AZSweetie -> RE: Tens Units...Advice? (3/16/2007 1:46:37 AM)

Never use it near the heart! i've used a Tens Unit before but i dont like how it feels. i don't like how i get the twitching in the area it's hooked up too. It feels weird to me. BUT whip out a Violet Want and i'll be all over that like white on rice! LOL! [8D]

I have been wondering about the PES box, how is it?  I have not done any of this electrical play stuff at all, not yet.  I would have to try shit out on myself first, just so I get an idea of what the Hell I was doing.
