The top aide to US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned in the wake of a scandal over the firing of eight US federal prosecutors.
Congress has been investigating whether the firing of the prosecutors - nearly one in 10 nationwide - was politically motivated. Some have called it a purge.

Reading up on this has been truly scary. Most of us believe most politicians have moral issues so to me this is less about hating one party or another but what a party in power tries to do. It was stunning to learn the statistics of before and after this particular purge about how people of one party were investigated way way more then the other. Also as I heard one person say, it is not so much that some people got fired but what the others who did not agree to do to stay on their jobs.

Again I think this has probably happen many times before by both parties but since to me the culture has changed, (people who believe their beliefs are infallible in a zealotry manor and need to be pursued no matter how it is done), that the examples probably just get worse and worse. I mean when they openly admit that Karl Rove was an advisor to all this, that takes some gumption.

This new sounds like they just sacrificed a scapegoat who now heads of to become a lobbyist in the attempt to squash any more investigations or at least try to now make the people looking into this look petty themselves.

And to top it all off... the list of apointees (and I am literally quoting here) "in the process of being pushed out" was sent to the Whitehouse, with a note asking "any corrections?"

The kicker being that since the PATRIOT Act got pushed through, Bush's appointments don't need to be confirmed by the Senate anymore.

Hmm. Depriving the legislature of their Constitutional duty, eh?

How SHOCKING!!!!

Mostly because Bill & Hillary fired ALL of the Prosecuters, not just some of them....

Maybe this belongs in the "Double Standards" thread instead. Hmm?

I really don't give a fuck to dive in this, but all reality aside, there is a division in government between the executive, legislative and enforcement branches, and I don't give a fiddlers fuck if Bush tosses ever honest and intelligent and fair guy out the door------------

any corrections?   you putrid, foetid fucktards in the administration.

The differences being 1) Clinton didn't remove his own appointees. 2) Clinton's appointees were subsequently confirmed by the Senate. 3) The Attorneys Clinton removed weren't investigating more Abrahamoff links or other political wrongdoings.

In an e-mail to Harriet Miers on Jan. 9, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’s chief of staff Kyle Sampson (who resigned yesterday) admitted that the Clinton administration never purged its U.S. attorneys in the middle of their terms, explicitly stating, “In recent memory, during the Reagan and Clinton Administrations, Presidents Reagan and Clinton did not seek to remove and replace U.S. Attorneys to serve indefinitely under the holdover provision”:

Hmmm.. Same Kyle Sampson who's been picked to take the fall for Gonzales. Of course, Schumer was just saying that that won't cut it in this case, they're not going along with the sacrificial lamb.

Remember that whole bit about the Administration being Indictable for violations of 18USC371, and people asked, "WHY aren't Federal Prosecutors going before a Grand Jury with this?"

Well, at the MINIMUM, you'll be fired. That's why.

Happened to the lady who got Jack Abrahamoff.

Bush removal ended Guam investigation
US attorney's demotion halted probe of lobbyist

By Walter F. Roche Jr., Los Angeles Times | August 8, 2005

WASHINGTON -- A US grand jury in Guam opened an investigation of controversial lobbyist Jack Abramoff more than two years ago, but President Bush removed the supervising federal prosecutor, and the probe ended soon after.

The previously undisclosed Guam inquiry is separate from a federal grand jury in the District of Columbia that is investigating allegations that Abramoff bilked Indian tribes out of millions of dollars.

See the difference yet?

No, farglebargle, the difference is that Bill and Hillary fired ALL the prosecuters so that they could put their cronies in all those spots.

Yeah, and Bush ALREADY DID THAT. NOW he's getting rid of HIS OWN APPOINTEES, HIS Cronies" who aren't Playing Ball.

It sucks when you give someone a patronage job, and they're not loyal enough to ignore your crimes.

According to what I've read, this never went as far as the White House, farglerbargle. Aren't you getting a little carried away? Maybe you should calm down a little.

http://www.startribune.com/562/story/1052569.html

quote:

Sources told Newsweek that the list of prosecutors to be fired was drawn up by Gonzales' chief of staff, "with input from the White House." And Allen Weh, the chairman of the New Mexico Republican Party, told McClatchy Newspapers that he twice sought Karl Rove's help -- the first time via a liaison, the second time in person -- in getting David Iglesias, the state's U.S. attorney, fired for failing to indict Democrats. "He's gone," he claims Rove said.

Rove works at the White House.

The issue here is why these US Attorneys were fired — a) because they weren’t obedient to their political masters, and b) because they lied to Congress about why it happened.

I always wonder about people who bring up something that happened almost a decade ago to justify their position, as if it somehow justifies what Bush has done. Do you really for a minute think that because Clinton is an asshole that Bush gets a pass? Partisans amuse me thoroughly

On Lou Dobb's show tonight NINETY SEVEN percent of those polled think Atty. General Alberto Gonzalez should go.
And I hope they throw out that Johnny Sutton guy who prosecuted those two Border Patrol Officers!

Ironically,
Kyle Sampson, the aide that resigned, has a nickname. He goes by "Scooter."

Not a good time to have that nickname in this administration. It makes you the fall guy.

All this "Buh, Buh, Buh, But Clinton Did It", is just obfuscation.

The issue here is why these US Attorneys were fired.

"Clinton Did It" doesn't cut it, as Clinton didn't remove his own appointees for being politically unreliable and prosecuting the wrong people. Or not prosecuting the political targets desired. There is so much testimony for the Senate Judiciary Committee, and Spector didn't look too happy about it, either.

Chuck Schumer is on a roll, though. Saw him on the CSPAN-2 rebroadcast.
