SirKenin -> Pet peeve/rant (3/9/2007 10:40:22 PM)

I found yet another pet peeve.  Something-American.  African-American...  Native-American... Italian-American.  BLAH!!!

Reality check people.  When you are sworn in as an American/Canadian citizen, you become an American/Canadian citizen.  You become AMERICAN.  CANADIAN.  If you immigrate to Pakistan you do not become an American-Pakistani.  What the fuck?  Most of these people that claim Blah-American/Canadian status have never left American/Canadian soil.  For fuck sakes.  Make up your damn minds.  If you are negro, you are negro.  If you are caucasian, you are caucasian.  If you are native, you are native.  You are either an American or you are not.  Stop focusing on idiotic politically correct labels.

If you are not an American or Canadian, go to your native land that you have probably never even seen.  When you are American/Canadian, you join the ranks of all of your fellow Americans/Canadians.  If you immigrated from another country, you left it for a reason..  Leave all your bullshit behind and integrate into your new culture and start a new life.  The reason there is so much dissension amongst the ranks is because of people like you.  America is going to hell in a handbasket because everybody can only focus on one thing.  Themselves.  Promoting segregation rather than unity, and a politically correct America (and Canada for that matter) is catering and pandering to this bullshit.

Bring your traditions and religion over if you want to.  Whatever floats your boat.  But damnit, respect the culture you live in.  Believe it or not, it takes precedence over your selfish desires.

Do not get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against immigration.  We gain much as countries by having them.  I have everything against people trying to shove their old culture down the throats of their new countrymen.  It is like religion or sexuality.  Practice it behind closed doors and respect the Law of the land.

Geez.

Insecure people needing group-identity?

Geez... I don't know. Seems silly to me.

sexypet -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/9/2007 11:15:07 PM)

To bad Dell didn't follow that belief system.  If they did...i might have been able to restore my system today with something other than the Windows XP Pro in Spanish CD they shipped with my laptop 2 yrs ago.

Funny thing, the original invoice says English.  Bastards!

hisannabelle -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/9/2007 11:26:39 PM)

i know many "african-americans" who resent being called that because the culture they were raised in was black america, not africa.

i would venture to point out that a lot of this "pc" language is actually invented and widely used by people not of the ethnicities in question...meaning, white people use this stuff, mostly. in fact, on one of the posters advertising travel abroad, one of the quotes says, "valencia was the first time i wasn't just a hyphenated american."

i can understand an immigrant from italy identifying as an italian-american. i have a harder time understanding a 10th generation american whose ancestors were from italy identifying as an italian-american.

i also really have a difficult time seeing what this has to do with practicing the cultures involved, or why that's bad, and why you seem to see all cultural practice as "shoving it down our throats." but then again, i don't get so frustrated about it. i also get lots of benefits. the people who work at many of the restaurants i frequent have a difficult time speaking english sometimes...but they cook damn good indian, tibetan, and nepali food. and they're nicer than the people at the american restaurants a majority of the time. i'll take that over perfect english and complete assimilation to "american" culture any day.

 :P take a deep breath already.

I can't belive you included  native-americans in this rant.

SirKenin, was the USA not built on selfish desires?

MuseofGrace -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/10/2007 6:46:12 AM)

For some, it would be more appropriate to describe themselves similar to the way I do--American-Filipino or American with a Filipino heritage.  The emphasis is that I was brought up primarily in American culture and the Filipino culture at home.  I chose US citizenship at 18.

SirKenin,

I'm not going to PC- pick apart your post.  I AGREE.

While in grade school, studying Ellis Island and immigration, I asked my mother what we "are". She answered "American.  Your grandparents were Hungarian and German/Manx".

i identify with my Norwegian heritage on my Mother's side & my American--ancestor on the Mayflower--heritage on my Father's side...i enjoy both cultures & like to keep them alive for the generations which follow....

sambamanslilgirl -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/10/2007 12:48:59 PM)

*applause*

i'm an American nothing more or else. i've never traveled to Africa so i cannot label myself as an African-American and i really don't fit in that category either because according to my heritage, there's Native (Sioux), French-Canadian, British, Louisana Creole and Irish in in my blood.

windchymes -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/10/2007 1:01:12 PM)

Can't I just keep on calling myself an All-American Mutt?

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/10/2007 2:35:08 PM)

Some of my ancestors came here on the Mayflower.  I'm of English, Scottish, Irish, French and German ancestry........ would that make me a European American in politcally correct terms? [;)]  [:D]

Actually it just makes me a certified Redneck American. [sm=dance.gif]

poplolly -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/12/2007 3:12:28 PM)

I agree, SirKenin.  My parents immigrated from Holland after WWII.  They never identified themselves as anything but Canadian.  And my brother and I were raised as Canadians.  We celebrated our Dutch heritage at home but were never Dutch-Canadian.  So unless you hold dual citizenship, why would you call yourself Whatever-Canadian or -American?

My favorite was the vast numbers of Hong Kong citizens who emigrated to Canada (making it Hongcouver) about 20 years ago, and proceeded to attempt to rebuild their black market economies in an anal retentive, British derived market structure.

Naturally, the Canadians who lived there were rather annoyed.

I agree with you, SirKenin, learn to play by the rules in place in the country you emigrated to, or go back to your own country and change it to suit you.

Just me, etc.

I guess you won't be celebrating St. Patrick's Day or Cinco de Mayo this year!

Sinergy -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/12/2007 7:58:28 PM)

On a related note, I am 1/2 Danish (my mother is a full-blooded Danish mormon) and on my fathers side I am a 4th generation Californian.

Since my UMs were born here, that makes them 5th generation...

Lotus, where is "Manx?"
Would that make you like, "Manxilovian" or something? Is it part of Germany or a seperate country?
I have dual American-Irish citizenship but I call myself American.
If someone is curious as to my heritage I have no problem answering their questions.
Yeah, I don't get that "African-American", "Irish- American"  "Italian-American" stuff either.
Most people who refer to themselves that way have never been to Africa ,Italy or Ireland or wherever.

juliaoceania -> RE: Pet peeve/rant (3/12/2007 9:09:41 PM)

I would disagree with the sentiment that we should keep the cultural traditions of Americans, because personally I do not want to me a hunter/gatherer the way weaw and twue Americans were.

I love different cultures, and part of what makes this country great is that we have taken all the people and the best from everywhere.. incorporating it into the larger culture. Homogenous Wonder Bread culture BORES the shit out of me. I am not a WASP, even if I am descended from them

"Many people who have never been to the Isle of Man are not sure exactly where it is! The answer is that it lies in the Irish Sea, between England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, less than 60 miles west of the Lancashire coastline, and it is easy to get to thanks to excellent air and sea services."
