The Atkins diet outdoes 3 others (as to be expected ). Here's a good breakdown of the study, from Dr. Micheal Eades blog (Eades and his wife are also low-carb proponents, so caveat emptor).

"The paper that the London Times wrote about last week finally saw publication today in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The study showed that a low-carb diet, followed for a year, produced vastly superior weight loss in premenopausal women as compared to a handful of low-fat diets. As might be expected, the promoters of the low-fat diets are crying foul."

Coming from one who lost 45 lbs on Atkins, felt and looked GREAT, it's always nice to see it's benefits confirmed....

Hi angel, and I agree. I've done an awful lot of research the last few months, and the evidence supporting low-carb eating is powerful and convincing.

I did the Atkins diet, and my cholestrol went through the roof.

Including your HDL (the good cholesterol), I assume? And if your triglycerides were high, I imagine they dropped to healthy numbers. Some feel cholesterol is a very poor indicator of heart risk, anyway. Roughly half of all people with heart disease have normal cholestrol. Before we introduced garbage like margarine and refined flour into our diets in the early 20th century, heart disease and diabetes was almost unheard of, and people ate a lot of fat, like butter and lard and eggs.
